I don't agree with this.

Poch made Rodriguez perform to his potential. No one was talking about him 18 months ago.

Welbeck is much more talented. Has great experience at both domestic, European and international level. If Poch can get him firing at anywhere near his potential he could be the best signing we make this summer.
Attitude plays a factor. Although I am warming to him I am not sure that Welbeck has the right mentality, especially when he's moving from United to Spurs.

Really?

Wanting to play football rather than sit on the bench at Man Utd seems like a good mentality to me. He's never going to unsurp the managers favourite - Van Persie or club captain in Rooney. So dropping down a level to play more regularly rather than remain a squad player seems like a mature career decision IMO.

To be honest he could turn out like Sturridge.
Was substandard at Chelsea and looked over hyped.
Has had a second wind at Liverpool.
Same could happen with Welbeck and us.

In the Redcafe Welbeck thread:

Sounds like he is getting closer to moving. Really hope he doesn't though. Please stay Danny!

He has looked more threatening in about 10 minutes of football than Rooney and RvP have in 160 minutes I think. He offers us movement. We'd be insane to get rid of him. He should be starting at the moment.

Come onnn.. we looked so much better once Welbeck came on today.

Mata should have come off for Welbeck earlier on.

Yes, really.

Four words that sum up the problem for Pochettino, he doesn't like to bring in players from more successful clubs in the same or other strong leagues. When he does they're usually toilet (like Osvaldo).

While Welbeck's intentions may be honourable, he isn't Sturridge and for the time being at least, we're not a step down by any measure other than balance sheet. If Welbeck thinks that for one second then it will be reflected in attitude and performances making his presence at Spurs pointless.

I will reiterate that I'm warming to him, however the only deal worth doing is a season long loan with a nonnegotiable option to purchase that cannot be withdrawn by United if Welbeck performs as we want him to.

The Secret Footballer does not rate Welbeck:

Welbeck is a player who I don’t mind playing against. He has nothing in his armoury that scares me apart from the crest over his heart that reads “Manchester United Football Club”.

Strong? Sure, but who isn’t in the Premier League? Decisive? No. Technically gifted? Not really. Quick? I’d leave him one on one, no problem. Clinical? You’re taking the piss, aren’t you?

Isn't the "Secret Footballer", Dave Kitson- a player who scored 19 PL goals in 4 seasons and just retired after playing for Oxford United in League 2 (and scoring 4 goals in 36 games)...

So, which bits don't you understand?

It's not for lack of understanding, but I simply disagree with your first point:

I don't think Poch dislikes bringing in players from more successful clubs at all.

A) You're implying he's had a big say in who Espanyol and Southampton acquire. We don't know how much say he has had.

B) At Espanyol he wasn't really able to bring in anyone seeing as how skint they were for money. Then there's really only 1.5 seasons of Southampton experience to draw from. Definitely not a big enough sample size to suddenly state what Poch does and doesn't like to do when he was at clubs with limited resources money/scouting wise.

C) Osvaldo punched someone, otherwise he may not have been a bad signing. Poch had a history with the player and was obviously hoping he could keep his shit together. Doesn't really mean every signing from a bigger club is toilet. Overall it's a totally disingenuous comparison. Osvaldo didn't fail to work because he came from a bigger club, he failed to work because of his own personal attitude problems.

D) You ignored signings like Dejan Lovren from Lyon (historically bigger club than Southampton).

Arsenal have activated Remy clause tonight also.

Wonder does this improve our chances of Welbeck, or maybe he has chosen us and they have moved on?!

Good shout I just mixed up my "Olympique's". Point still stands though. Lyon are still historically bigger than Southampton.

I used to mix up my 'Olympique's too until I discovered this quick and easy guide.

Lyon = Olympique Lyonnais = OL

Marseille = Olympique de Marseille = l'OM

West Ham = Olympique Stadium Pikeys = LOL

Happy to help.

I swear to god, if it goes to deadline day and them ****s down the road sign Falcao whilst we end up with Wellbeck then I'm giving up on supporting Spurs. Mark my words. Enough is enough.
