Front 4 all coming deep for the ball again when they should be spreading the opposing defence.

Same problem we were having two years ago.. Jansenn coming on changed this and started pushing their back four around and giving them something to think about.

It's a reason I think we should be considering N'jie more often (if he stays, obviously)

Kane needs to decide if he's a No.9 or a No.10 and commit. He doesn't need to be both.. look what it's done to Rooney.

The only time we played in pre-season with our first 11 was against Inter. We looked slow and rusty today until Janssen came on. Both Dele and Erikssen were off today and they are the vital part of the team with regards to creativity. We simply didn't create enough today, the first chance coming in the 25th minute.

Also, Poch has a team full of favourites. We need better depth on the bench than just kids to challenge the first teamers. The team aren't scared for their places. Taking Dier off was partially a waning shot to the others. If Lloris hadn't gone off he may have subbed Dele or Erikssen as well.

We had 10+ matches last season just that like today where we were the dominant team with more chances, but only managed a draw because we couldn't carve out or finish our chances in the final third. That's why so many people thought it was critical we sign a livewire attacking midfielder with dribbling and ball striking ability. As I've said repeatedly, neither Nkoudou or Njie are that player. We need to seriously consider taking a minor risk and going for Boufal, or in the alternative, someone like Bernardo Silva from Monaco. The fact Poch only subbed on Janssen speaks volumes about our attacking depth off the bench.

Dembele's absence leading to dropped points also isn't a surprise. We had true relegation form when he didn't start last season, and we desperately need to figure out a solution when he isn't available because he cannot player every PL and CL game.

I'm still pretty annoyed that shoulder-to-shoulder challenge between Kane and Funes-Mori was given against us. Kane just bossed him completely; he can't help it he's going to win a 50/50 against a weaker player. I'd imagine that would have been a goal as Kane was looking to square it to an unmarked Alli. It's the little things.

Absolutely massive call in regards to the flow of the game. Once we equalised, if any team was going to win, it was us. Kane squared it and Dele had a tap in. Would have probably changed the game completely.
The ref didnt have a great game today

And he was still incredible that season.

On the game today, I thought Eriksen was non existent until Jansenn came on.

How massive a difference did he make? Brilliant. Hopefully we will see more of him and Kane as he really gives us a focal point.

Lamela was great as he has been in pre season. And Walker seems to have learned how to cross, finally.

Vertonghen was off the pace so I hope he will improve soon. I dread to think what will happen if Toby gets injured.

Vorm did very well and we are lucky to have such a solid back up. He might not be as strong as Hugo but he'd be first choice in a lot of PL teams.

How many more games is Dembele out for? Wanyama was ok but he and Dier together is a no go.

Good start to the season with a point. Looking at Everton I don't think they will lose many at home this season.

I pretty much agree with you.

Cannot, for the life of me, understand why Vorm attracts so much vitriol. He's a back-up 'Keeper - and a pretty decent one. And, from what I have seen, he seems to play a big part in the group and team spirit. I don't see how much better a mature 'Keeper anyone thinks we could attract, let alone a mature 'Keeper to cover Lloris but capable of keeping his place when he gets a chance (which really would be ideal). I've no complaints about bringing an exciting young talent in as back-up - if he really is a potential future star. Just don't know why some fans have to show Vorm so much spite when they talk about either of these possibilities.

In regard to Dier/Wanyama, I know this might be a tad optimistic - but maybe with a bit more practice they can adopt their game to play together. After all, at this stage last season folk were totally writing off the Dier in midfield experiment. It may well be our best option in bigger games while Dembélé is out.

(Easy to be wise after the event but this was my chosen formation before the match started)
I wonder if MP considered a 433, to compensate for the loss of Dembele? We always seem to struggle without him and again today there was a serious lack of creativity from midfield. I felt if Eriksen had sat centrally, between or just in front of Dier and Wanyama we'd have had a much better balance. Also think it may be Eriksen's best position anyway. I'd like to see Poch at least willing to try more variety than 4231 every time, especially when the available players don't seem to fit the system.

As for the match itself, I wonder what people thought (particularly if they were at the match) was the formation when Dier went off? Commentators said it was 442, which it clearly wasn't. I thought it was 4231 (surprise surprise) with Kane dropped back to no 10 and Eriksen into the midfield two. Thoughts?

I'm really afraid he will be like Rooney.. IMO he doesn't need to be that deep even if Janssen is playing.. Although he did join up occasionally.. The two can try playing together up front constantly can't they? As a 4-1-3-2..

Yep, and their was a time later where there was a shoulder to shoulder and Kane was barged right to the ground wth noting given. Frustrating.

Completely agree. Can't imagine the shit Vorm would be getting if he'd let that goal in.

We still need a game winner in attack.
Game changers are a rare commodity and increadably expensive. Our only hope is to nurture one through the youth development or be extremely lucky and buy someone relatively unknown who quickly develops into this type of player.
