Clearly missing one or perhaps two players in the squad that can provide that spark, be that catalyst in the final third - ask questions and get answers...

Still, a point away at Goodison on the first day, in Ronald's first game, is a point I'll take.

Palace next COYS.

A point up on last season after 1 game.

I think we struggle if we have more than 1 or 2 of our key players having nothing games like yesterday as we have nobody to bring on the replace them who are at the same level.

And he was still incredible that season.

On the game today, I thought Eriksen was non existent until Jansenn came on.

How massive a difference did he make? Brilliant. Hopefully we will see more of him and Kane as he really gives us a focal point.

Lamela was great as he has been in pre season. And Walker seems to have learned how to cross, finally.

Vertonghen was off the pace so I hope he will improve soon. I dread to think what will happen if Toby gets injured.

Vorm did very well and we are lucky to have such a solid back up. He might not be as strong as Hugo but he'd be first choice in a lot of PL teams.

How many more games is Dembele out for? Wanyama was ok but he and Dier together is a no go.

Good start to the season with a point. Looking at Everton I don't think they will lose many at home this season.

Too early to judge Wanyama and Dier and say it doesn't work.

Not having a pop at you but a better barometer for where we are in comparison to last season is to compare the same fixtures. Therefore we are all square on last year.

It didn't work in that game. It doesn't look a natural fit at all, they're far too similar. But we shall see. Need someone with more creativity and mobility in there, for me, if we're only playing 1 up top

Alli was far worse tho. Almost stunk the place out he was so bad. Let's hope he gets his sharpness back quickly

Thought it was a game devoid of quality on the whole from both sides. Everton were on top in the first half but made very little from countless breaks. Goal was a complete fluke. The new guy from Villa looks good tho

Our chances were similarly scratchy. Janssen hits it straight at the keeper, save from Lamela is a jammy deflection, very little else to note - except that shitty ref decision when Kane got through and had an easy square to Alli only to be wrongly flagged a foul.

Tho going on Alli the rest of the game, he probably would have missed it anyway

Great moment for the goal, made by Toby driving us on and a surprisingly good cross from Walker. Lamela looks so up for this season

It is too early yes, but it was negative yesterday and as soon as it was broken up we were better for it, mind you I would have taken Wanyama off ahead of Dier. But we don't need two DMs next weekend v Palace. Mason or even Winksy should be starting with Dier or Wanyama.

Really can't believe he'll do it at home. Safety first on first away game I hope

(Easy to be wise after the event but this was my chosen formation before the match started)
I wonder if MP considered a 433, to compensate for the loss of Dembele? We always seem to struggle without him and again today there was a serious lack of creativity from midfield. I felt if Eriksen had sat centrally, between or just in front of Dier and Wanyama we'd have had a much better balance. Also think it may be Eriksen's best position anyway. I'd like to see Poch at least willing to try more variety than 4231 every time, especially when the available players don't seem to fit the system.

As for the match itself, I wonder what people thought (particularly if they were at the match) was the formation when Dier went off? Commentators said it was 442, which it clearly wasn't. I thought it was 4231 (surprise surprise) with Kane dropped back to no 10 and Eriksen into the midfield two. Thoughts?
..............Vorm
Walker Toby Vert Rose
Erksen VW Alli Lamela
...........Kane
.........Janssen

4 4 1 1?
Alli definately went deeper...Lamela came more left...and Eriksen was no longer leftside...Kane coming deeper

No that's fine. I know that's the case. I was just trying to be positive amount the result. Anyway, you'd expect Everton to be a better team under koeman this season so a point away against them might look better than a point away against them last season. Although regardless we should have won both games with the chances we had overall.
