I agree not someone to replace him and we should not guarantee players a place in the team... I don`t think top teams should do that.. Bony will not be guaranteed a place at Man City and Falcao is not at at Man Utd.. Harry Kane should not be afraid of competition and I do not think he is after all he has overcome Soldado and Adebayor this season to be the number one.

As a team we need to continue to improve and if that means we get another top striker in then sorry I am not sentimental and I want that player. Harry Kane will not become a worse player by training every day with better players and we have enough games to keep everyone happy as already I think some of our squad are playing too many games.

We may be one of the stronger clubs in the same division but we are not on the same level as the clubs who can attract Bony and Falcao at this stage in their careers. They can offer them rotational minutes, immense prestige, fat salaries, and high likelihood of Champions League football while we could only attract a player like Bony if we promise first choice football. That's just the way it is.

It isn't about sentimentality, it's about practicality. You cannot replace a youth academy player who has done what he has done. You absolutely cannot, as the ripple effect will carry throughout the entirety of the youth ranks. You have to reward them for when they come through, or you put a stake right through the motivation of those youth pushing at every level.

So yes, we must provide Kane with competition and we do have the games to keep an incoming player and Kane happy. But we cannot pull in a player who would replace him, as players such as Bony and Benteke would not come to us without such a guarantee. Absolutely no question there. Forced competition and quality into an unbalanced squad is exactly what's led us to our current problems as is.

I would say that very few clubs, if any, would give guarantees like that to any player!

Yeah, I'm not sure how common this "demand" is nowadays, now that it's squad based approach rather than a first XI approach.

With most players no, but there are cases in which players would not make moves to certain clubs to hold out for bigger ones if their playing time demands are not met. Of those cases, I'm sure Benteke and Bony would be included as it would pertain to us.

I don`t agree as we could have attracted Benteke, Bony, Remy previously but we did not have the will to do those deals...

Falcao is a different level I agree but I was not talking about him anyway as the other players are not in his bracket of being a world star...

With the collapse of Russia as a financial power there are only 7 or 8 clubs in world football that we cannot complete with as an overall package and with FFP the richest teams cannot take all the top players so there will be more options.

As you say he a young player and you cannot expect him to carry a team with the ambitions of Spurs that would be totally unfair. I want to see our young players doing well but more than that I want us to be successful and that will not happen if we burnout the likes of Harry Kane by playing him every game at this stage of his development. Right now I would like Berahino as he is young and English and I can see them getting better together and would complement each other as well as challenge each other. I don`t want us to bring in lesser players to protect Harry Kane`s status in the team. I want us to bring in players who will make his think I need to do even better to keep my place.. That`s how this club will be come winners and that`s how Harry Kane will become an even better player!!

I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree, but I'm not sure how you can place competition for one position in one moment over the importance of the vitality and momentum of the youth academy, nor why you think Bony for instance would have entertained the prospect of being a rotational option for us just as strongly as he did his current move to City. No matter how much this game changes, and no matter how many competitions we add, and no matter how big the importance of the squad becomes, the psyche of professional footballers has never and will never change. They will always be some of the most ambitious people on the planet, and you better believe they will ask in any negotiation how much playing time they will receive, and they will weigh it up against their own level.

Bony and Benteke would have come to us assuredly even as soon as six months ago, but that's because we could have promised them first choice football. This January, with Kane's (massive difference again that he's a youth player - this cannot be ignored and you cannot consider him the same as any other player) form, we absolutely could not promise them first choice. As such, there isn't a chance in hell Bony would have chosen us over City, and there isn't a doubt in my mind Benteke would wait for other offers this window of just wait until the summer. No chance they would agree to rotate with Kane.

Lambert reckons it would be a huge sign of intent for the club if Delph signed the new contract he has been offered and remains hopeful.

“With Fabian it will not be about money,” Lambert said.

“I’ve known him long enough to know the type of guy he is, and it will not be a money thing with him. He just wants to play football.

“It would be a major boost if we can get him to stay. It would send out a great message.

“Him turning around and staying would be a massive statement for everybody at this club - fans, players, staff.”
