How would you use Modric?

I don't like him in the center of a 4-4-2. It asks too much of him defensively, which he's willing to work for, but it's not his strength. He hasn't been allowed to get that far up the pitch at all. I don't think the rest of the Croatians look that hot. Their strikers are absolute garbage. There other CM, (Kovac?) has no skill on the ball and isn't that great in defense. Kranjcar and the other outside player haven't done much either. I mean, they're playing Austria, not Germany.

He's clearly doing a job tonight, but I hope we see him as a much more offensive threat. Whenever he touches the ball he is quality, but he is being played in such a reserved role that whenever Croatia attack he still isn't getting over the halfway line. Not what I was expecting from Croatia, but our boy still oozes class.

Have to be honest here, this game is the first time I've actually concerntrated on watching Luca and I've been pretty surprised. Haven't seen too much of the creative genius, spraying passes about I thought he'd be. He's been much quieter, as some else mentioned, ball retention, keeping things ticking over and seems very aware of the game, always on the look out for plugging gaps and protecting. Is this the way we will use him next year? In peoples opinions obviously as we can't be sure. He certainly does sit alot more than I thought he would, he seems to linger around the halfway line, so if we bring in another DM, then New DM - Modric, might not be too far away from Ramos Sevilla days. After seeing Luca today (and it is one game) what about a 4-3-3?

Robbo
Hutton - Woodie - King - Bale
Box to Box Midfielder (Insert name) - Veloso (hehe) - Modric
Dos Santos - Berba - Keano

With Veloso sitting with defense in mind, Modric semi sitting with creativity in mind and a box to box midfielder just running around like a headless chicken :D

Centre mid. Thought he was the best player on the pitch by a mile whenever he touched the ball today. WELCOME LUKA! Looks a truly wonderful little player to me.

Wasn't very impressed with him to be honest. Looked very lightweight and lost possession a few times needlessly. Passing was sloppy at times too and he didn't really get involved after the first 15 mins.

i wasn't really impressed by Luka,i thought he was an ACM but most of the time he was the deepest out of the two CM's..he was also caught ball watching loads of times and the game just seemed to pass him by..when on the ball he did spray a few nice passes and his run towards the end was good, shame about the final pass though

He has to play in the centre. He's very quick with the ball at his feet and he always has space. He's very clever with his positioning and has great vision. He isn't too disimilar to Carrick in where he plays. He doesn't have the long range pass that Carrick has, but he's much better at picking obscure passes and he's quicker on the ball. He doesn't have the pace to play on the wing, not in the Premier League anyway.

I think he'll fit in perfectly with the way Ramos plays. Most of the attacks with Sevilla come from wide positions. So Modric will be one of 2 central midfielders that sits a bit deeper and keeps posession. He had a bigger stronger partner alongside him today, who would stay back. I can see us pairing Modric up with someone like Poulsen (or maybe actually Poulsen.)

He would definately be our Fabregas. I was very impressed with how he always made himself available today and often finds his target. We should play with wingers for him to pick out passes for. I'm delighted we have him, because theres no doubt that we'll keep the ball a lot better next season.

We currently have a great partnership at centre back with King and Woodgate. Aswell as a great striker partnership with Berbatov and Keane. Its crucial that we find the right partner for Modric, so we have a great partnership on the same level as those. This was one of our weakest areas last season. As i say, someone like Poulsen or maybe Tymoschuk or De La Red, to sit even deeper. He certainly isn't a defensive midfielder, as he likes to get forward more and more as the game goes on (he finished the game today as the most attacking midfielder.)

All in all, i'm loving this signing. Its so important that we get the right partner for him next season.

My perfect 11:

McGregor
Hutton Woodgate King Bale
Giovani Modric Tymoschuk Capel
Berbatov Keane

i was dissapointed that he wasnst played in the hole like i thought he would because at the start at the game for the penalty he did really well in a tight space in the corner to turn away from 2 defenders and get it to olic but then the rest of the game he didnt go over the half way line which i was unhappy about as i think he is more effective in the hole like he prove in the first half of the first hlaf (if u know wat i mean)

Agreed. And at the moment Jenas to play alongside him. I'm not gonna even mention players like Veloso etc. as it's just pie in the sky stuff at the moment......

Oops I think I mentioned him....:)

He was obviously told to stay deep. Towards the end, he was given the license again, and was often the furthest man forward.

Anyone else think he plays pretty much identically to Benayoun?

No.

I think he is really good, perhaps more of a combination of Carrick and Scholes.

he will be our fabregas. The only problem is that fabregas had a workaholic in flamini covering space and winning the ball. WE DESPERATELY NEED A PLAYER LIKE THAT to get the best out of modric. the best option we have in the squad is zokora but i don't think he has the intelligance

Modric worked super hard, just didn't tackle. He was up and down the pitch, and switched sides a lot - always making himself available to collect the ball. Looks like a cracking signing. Carrickesque distribution, which we have sorely missed the last 2 seasons. Berbs will have a field day if he stays.

Clearly got told to stay deep by Bilic. Disappointing for us fans as we wanted to see him on the ball more.
