It is thanks to JJ and Zok that we are in Europe in the first place. They were the main pairing for most of last season.
It was actually Graham Roberts who said he'd run through a brick wall for Spurs, but the principle holds good. The Sunderland game summed it up for me, with Jenas wimping on to the ref about Etuhu being nasty to him. Can you imagine Mackay or Roberts or Mullers doing that? No, you can't. They'd have kicked the **** six feet into the air. (Etuhu, I mean, not the ref.)
A couple more Roberts-isms that should be pinned up on the dressing-room door.
'I earned the right to get in the team, and fought every game to be in it.'
'Every game I played was a bonus.'
I'd say it's more the difference in football as a game these days. You simply don't get as many "hard men" as you used to. It's a sign of the way the game has gone. Players aren't literally playing for their next pay check as the old boys were. Their attitudes are different to yesteryear.
It's not just Jenas, it's the vast majority of footballers these days who are a bit, how I can put this...... fairy like.
I find it odd how their are two sides who claim that they watch JJ's performances but come up with polar arguments. One group says his work rate is great while the other completely denies that he has any use. I deliberately watch JJ's and Zokora's performances because I believe that this is where the team's problems lie and I feel that both are pretty useless! JJ CAN run but often his application is lacking; I can't forget his performance against Newcastle, especially the moment when Zokora won the ball for a counter attack and JJ stood 2 yards away from him, not moving (he also passed the ball into touch 3 times that night - despite the lack of pressure on him). As for Zokora, Jol said it to one of our fellow SC members at the puma kit launch: he can't pass, he can't tackle and he can't shoot. Spot on, especially the passing bit. Bring in Tainio and Steed, both of whom can tackle.
Steed is playing so well at the moment, I hope everyone appreciates his efforts.
No, he's not, but by the same token he's not as good as he could, and should, be. He has all the attributes to be a top-drawer midfielder, but something's missing. Self-belief, maybe? You just don't get the sense that he is going to step up and really boss the midfield, and someone who will do that is what we need. Hopefully, Ramos will succeed in pulling that out of him.
Who did he say this to?
I blame it all their names.
After all, in the days when we used to win things, we had Dave's and Bill's and Bobby's and Jimmy's in the team.
Good solid, working class names, with grit.
Now it's full of Jermain(e)'s, Aaron's and Darren's. Should all be in media study groups or on big brother, or lost in the fcuking jungle or something.
Bloody kids of today, no get up and go in any of 'em.

I think Ramos is looking for Boateng to be the new Jenas, only not a pussy. I actually had no idea he was such a big bloke.
