I think that was because Poch was forced to improvise after the failure to secure the CM that he wanted (Schneidlerlin) that season, left him without the requisite defensive midfielder for his system. I never got the sense it was always Poch's intention to play Dier there mate. It was more a case of needs must. Thank God we've got such a brilliant manager eh mate.
But Dier started at DM in the very first friendly of the summer. Weird if he wasn't planning on playing him there.

£3M is an absolute bargain for this lad. He was quality for Germany in the Euro U21s last month - in fact I thought he was their best player - and they won the tournament.

Don't be put off because you may not have heard of him and the fact that he is dirt cheap. He's passed my eye test and that's one thing that Holtby never did. This is exactly the sort of signing we should be making and though I also like KWP i'd be very surprised if Toljan didn't have the better career.

We also went after Ilaramendi when we couldn't get Schneiderlin so Dier at DM must have been a fair way down the list of options.

Does Toljan own a horse I wonder (n)

He does seem like a U23 signing. Maybe eyeing him doesn't mean we're not interested in a more senior right back as well. He as left back and KWP as right back for the U23s would set us nicely for the future. Unless he would only come if expecting senior football already.

I should have elaborated a little more as I both agree and disagree with @[email protected]. You have to remember, two summers ago our midfield consisted of Mason and Bentaleb at the start of the transfer window. I believe Poch's first priority was to bring in Schneiderlin to man the DM spot, but I also think that his plan was to have Dier become the backup DM to Schneiderlin. As Brenda Rodgers bought up all of SCBC's stars at the start of the summer, the Schneiderlin deal feel through and we then went after Illara. Point is, I think it was Poch's plan to have Dier as a DM, not just an afterthought, I just don't think anybody envisioned how good he would be which saved us from not being able to bring in a DM.

Ancelotti has said Bayern won't be signing any defenders this summer, I'm pretty sure we will get this guy.

He's 6ft so has size unlike Trips & Kwp so is a different type of player, seems fast too, if he is technically proficient enough he may end up being a hell of a buy with afew season under Poch he will look like he's on roids

Hoffenheim have confirmed Pavel Kaderabek has extended his contract with the club until 2021. #TSG

He's the other right back in the squad that was highly touted.

I reckon the choice is between KWP being promoted or Toljan. I reckon as soon as the tour is finished Poch will either back KWP or go with Toljan.

Maybe, but Toljan fills the gap between Trippier and KWP in terms of age and he and Kyle between them potentially provide a bit of insurance against Rose leaving next summer as both can play LB as well.

Toljan, or Pereria for that matter, give a player to fill the gap between Trippier and Walker-Peters, but there is enough versatility there that either could cover LB alongside Davies in the short term whilst Rose isn't available, giving Walker-Peters chance to stake a claim.
Looking ahead into the season, Poch quite often takes both a LB and RB on the bench, so either having players that could cover both would open up the bench options, or else he'll continue, but as soon as any of the senior 4 are unavailable, Walker-Peters is straight onto the bench, so his chances will
not be overly restricted. If anything, the departure of Walker who could only play RB has opened the door for KWP.
