If I remember correctly, Martin Chivers played @ 64 games that long old season!

Similar to you, I recall going to Milan (home) midweek, West Brom (away), Chelsea (home), Milan (away) then Southampton (away) all within @ 10 days. (All while living in Manchester).

Great memories TCO.

My 1st ever away match outside London was at Ipswich on the Easter Monday (L) and the 2nd was the UEFA Final 1st leg at Wolves in May

I was still at school. As you say 60+ games with small squads.

I must have seen over 50 matches in 72/73 as I was working by then with most of my wages going on watching us.

Weird how football works.

Last January Bentancur signs and goes into team as Skipp injured.

This February, Bentancur gets injured allowing Skipp to take his place back!
They both play in midfield as well.

What are the chances !

Pleased for the boy.
After injury and signing of Betancur and lack of playing time
I thought he might stagnate and not develop fully
I said he looked 'ordinary'.
Not after the last few games and yesterday's performance,
goal and interview.
He's back on the 'future captain' path
and I am happy to eat my words and even choke on them.
Come on Oliver you know we want you to.

It made me laugh yesterday as Skipp completely dominated the £107m footballer in Enzo Fernandez. I started to look at their respective careers.

- Skipp has played 114 Professional Football Games, and turned 22 in September of last year. 5ft 10 in height.
- Fernandez has played 117 Professional Football Games, and turned 22 in January this year. 5ft 10 in height.

Basically both at the same level. Skipp has played more competitive football in harder leagues (67 appearances for Spurs), whereas Enzo has played only 29 games for Benfica and 4 for Chelsea.

The fact that someone has gone out & spent over £100m on him just goes to show that a fancy name really can get you places. If Skipp was to have a value against his name it would be probably be somewhere between £15-25m.

The thing that struck me so much yesterday was the mobility comparison of the two. Skipp was far more dynamic and a few times blew past him when on the ball. I have no doubt that Fernandez will be a good player, but he is the epitome of Chelsea at the minute with spending a lot of money on players with potential and no experience (FofanaX2, Madueke, Mudryk, Fernandez, Badiashile, Santos & Chukwuemeka)

Back to Skipp, I was absolutely delighted for him yesterday, a great goal and a great performance.

Got to give Enzo Fernandez credit for the assist. Instead of just leaving the ball for the goalkeeper to pick up he took it away from Kepa and gave it to Skipp to shoot and score.

This isn’t really an accurate comparison though is it. Skipp hasn’t broken into the national team and won the World Cup, yet.

It bonkers how much Chelsea paid for this kid, but he’s clearly a talented youngster. Chelsea seem to be a mess right now, I doubt they’ll see the best of these purchases until they’ve had another two or three managers yet.

He's a very good player and had been absolutely superb for Benfica.

Time will tell how good he is but I certainly wouldn't write players off yet.

Could equally refer that statement to Skipp too.

Comparing Skipp and Fernandez isn’t the best comparison. Skipp is a defensive midfielder through and through whereas Fernandez is a ball playing CM who’s biggest strengths are dictating play, making the final pass and chipping in with goals, he can also put his foot in but it’s not his strength. Fernandez will start to show his worth when Chelsea get a proper DM next to him and they have a proper striker to finish moves that he will most likely be the architect of. He’s the kind of midfielder that would look world class in a team like Bayern, Barca or Real that control the game. Let’s hope Chelsea never get to that level!

Internationally no I agree, domestically its a very fair comparison. There was also a very big chance that Fernandez would not have played in the World Cup had Lo Celso been fit. Before the World Cup he had appeared for a total of 95 minutes for Argentina.

I'm also not laying any blame at him as he didn't ask to be bought for that amount, it's more that Chelsea are throwing huge amounts of money for a potentially good player.
