the comparison of kaboul and corluka is an interesting one. both can play at rb, cb and cm. both are skillful and very comfortable on the ball. i wouldn't say kaboul is better , they are both very, very good players.

in an attacking sense kaboul is better, he has attacking instincts , determination and some great delivery when going forward.

very similar players, in many ways

ACHIEVEMENT

I'm not going to offer in depth thoughts, as they would require objectivity and tonight is not a night for objectivity, even though, to be honest, as the game wore on there were more and more positives.

Maybe tomorrow I'll elaborate but tonight let's just summarise the mostly good stuff. I think in the first half when City were in control we and we had to stand firm we did. First half the defence was rock fucking solid and was one of the best games as a unit of 5 that our defence has played all season. Gomes, Kabul, Dawson, King, Ekotto. All five were excellent all game. Lets bare in mind that they were up against one of the best attacks in the EPL.

The other stand out performer was Crouchy. He saw the ball 44 times making 27 passes. Set up Bale with a beautiful knock down and got himself into great positions and was desperately unlucky to hit the post and the keepers legs. This bloke continues to be the most misunderstood player in our squad. He constantly showed for the ball, holding up and bringing players into the game. He was fucking magnificent.

Redknapp deserves credit for bringing Crouch in for this game and also for his subs, all of which I thought were spot on.

The more this game wore on the better we got I thought and in the end were deserved winners.

This is something I've wanted for a very, very long time. I salute every single player in our squad and our manager who have achieved this.

You know the best thing about tonight?

It's the fact we fucking deserved it. We battled for every ball, busted a gut and showed class where you have to show it.

Barring letting that backpass roll under his foot, Gomes was superb. A couple of amazing saves as ever, and a wonderful celebration when we scored. I love Gomes.

Kaboul, for me, has made himself first choice right back. He was sublime, I barely noticed Bellamy was on the pitch, and he worked well with Lennon both defensively and offensively.

Dawson won everything in the air, had Tevez in his pocket on the ground and was just superb all night long. Great performance from a great centre back.

King was my man of the match. Second game in four days, and you'd never know he had no knee. What a man he is, his pace, reading of the game, distribution, tackling, and all round intelligent play, the man is amazing. Adebawho?

Ekotto was a little shaky with his distribution, but his coolness and composure was invaluable, as were the many clearances he made when he tucked in with the centre backs while Bale dropped back. Top class game overall.

Lennon is not at his best, and he still scared the shit out of the opposition. When the ball goes to him, he rarely loses it, and the rest of the side just have so much space to move into because of him. Really began affecting proceedings in the second half and is a truly class winger.

Huddlestone was sublime. His defensive work, headers included, was rock solid, and his passing was great all night. With Capello watching, and Barry going off injured, Huddlestone has to make the initial 30.

Modric had a poor first half in my opinion, but wasn't helped by our long ball tactic. In the second half he was superb, taking the ball in tight spaces in front of our defence and driving the team forward. That one long pass out to our left with a volley off the outside of his right boot had me drooling.

Bale wasn't at his very best, but he must've set a record for ground covered. The poor kid was understandably knackered at the end. The way he covers the entire left flank non stop is just amazing, and throw in a sweet cross and clever dribble and we have a very dangerous young winger.

Defoe only really had one chance all game and it took a great save to keep it out. He worked tirelessly, held the ball up and passed fairly well. He may not have scored but he was hard working and intelligent all night.

Crouch missed a few, but he scored and that's what's important. It is the reason we are in the Champions League, and he really held the ball up well tonight and made sure we kept possession as much as possible. He looked far better in the second half when we played it to his feet.

Bentley came on for a shattered Lennon and he did well. None of his usual dallying and trying more than he should, just kept it simple, crossed when it was on, and kept us in possession.

Pavlyuchenko came on, hassled, had a good shot which was very well saved, and made a couple of good passes. Decent game.

Palacios had little time on the pitch but that time was spent making sure City couldn't get near our area, and he did it very well, meaning that we ended the match camped in their half.

Special manager to Harry. I said, as soon as I saw the side, that he'd picked the best possible team and that he could do no more, and so it was. He got everything right tonight and we're finally where we want as a result. Well done gaffer.

A wonderful, truly wonderful, performance. City and particularly Tevez, Johnson and Barry looked well up for it at the beginning and I was a little worried. However we slowly imposed ourselves on the game and thoroughly deserved the victory.
Now there's still a chance of third so I hope we finish with a bang on Sunday. Avoiding the CL qualifying would be great. Whatever, a did-I-say-it wonderful display!
Gomes 9 - two great saves to keep us in it, composed and commanding
BAE 8 - calm as ever at the back and some great runs late on
Kaboul 8.5 - cracking assist, he has been surprisingly good of late
Dawson 8.5 - another wholehearted confident display in front of the England manager
King 9.5 - fantastic display, how does he do it?
Bale 8 - he, Modric and BAE linked so well, some great runs again
Modric 7.5 - better as the game wore on, so composed I worried when he came off
Huddlestone 7.5 - neat passing, good clearance, could have got sent off
Lennon 7 - flashes but not yet back to form or fitness
Defoe 7 - just as he sparked into life he came off
Crouch 8.5 - never stopped trying, could have had a hat-trick
subs
Bentley 7 - hard working, did a good job
Palacios 6 - little to do in in short time on the pitch
Pav 6.5 - good movement, nearly finished them off

That's the best one-liner I've seen on this forum since the one about Jesus having trouble handling crosses.

absofuckinglutely AMAZING night. So proud of the lads & Harry who got everything just right. All the back 5 awsome - special mention for Kaboom - Daws/King don't need to mention as world class.

Very nervous in the first half but the back was so solid 20/10.
Hudds pacing was a bit wayward at times.

2nd half - we really took control as it went on. Crouch was excellent all night.

WELL DONE BOYS - YOU REALLY DESERVED IT!!!

Harry gets a 10/10 for his team selection. Absolutely spot on and he learned from the Man U defeat.

Most noteably I was pleased with he selection of Kaboul at RB and also the non selection of Palacios.

Palacios is a regular first XI choice as a defensive midfielder but he hasn't been at his best lately and I was glad to see Assou-Ekotto at LB instead of RB, Bale to LM and Modric to CM.

You are clearly insane. But tonight I forgive you.

Look I apologize if people disagree. That is the beauty of the game, but (Hudd is on my shirt) I just thought he had a terrible game. Against a 3 man mid, he couldn't pass unless it was back to the center-halves. It's not an indication of his overall contribution during the campaign...only that tonight he wasn't good...at all.

Finally am coming down from that win, here goes

Gomes 9 kept us in this game with some brilliant saves in the first half, if that Johnson strike goes in, that game might have been 2-0 or 2-1 to Man City.

Kaboul 10 really played so well, set up the goal with his brute strength and really set up a couple more chances in the game as well. My MOM.

King 10 I have a good feeling about the game when I saw him in the lineup before the game, just love the guy, my favorite Spurs player of all time.

Dawson 8 actually thought it took him 30 minutes to get settled down and he made at least a couple of mistakes early and left Modric out to dry with a bad pass as well. But saying all that he always puts in a good shift and you just aren't going to out work him.

BAE 9 thought he was great and really should be our first choice left back, has good positional sense and a sort of nasty streak this team needs with guys like King and Modric in the team.

Lennon 6 not his fault he isn't 100% but not his best game, can't wait for him to get back to full strength and see him and Bale crushing teams.

Huddlestone 8 a few mistakes but he and Modric really are claiming their places as the 1st choice midfield pairing with such good games in the last couple of weeks.

Modric 8 once he learns to shoot he will be world class, he just oozes class and calmness that if our defenders give him the ball he isn't going to lose it which in turn calms them down and lets them play the ball out of trouble instead of just hoofing it to the other team.

Bale 9 thought he busted his ass for the cause and needs to be rewarded with a huge contract. If this guy isn't a left winger I don't really know who is. Forget this bullshit about not having enough space farther up the pitch, he will make his own space with smart movement and good passing from Hudd and Modric.

Crouch 10 was outstanding tonight. I also had a good feeling about him when I saw him on the pitch, he just upped his game and rose to the occasion. Worth every pound we spent on the guy for this performance alone.

Defoe 7 actually thought he held up the ball pretty well and if not for a wonder save from Fulop he would have been the hero. For me he is and should be an important part of this team next year.

Bentley 8 great time wasting at the end, also had a very good chance that ended up back at Kaboul before he set up Crouch which I just liked Bentley getting in the center of the box trying to score.

Palacios 7 not enough time to do much but didn't do anything wrong and glad he got to be on the pitch to celebrate, he has been so important to Spurs since he got here.

Pav 6 thought he could have played better but nothing horrible, just not much time on the pitch.

Harry 10 the lineup was perfect, wish he subbed a bit quicker but hard to complain about leaving those guys who were busting their asses out there to earn their win.

Fans 10 great support in a tough place to play, wish I could have been there. Although on a side note I might have converted a buddy of mine to be a Spurs fan after that performance.

wilson is not a defensive midfielder. he is an all round midfielder who presses the ball.

i'm quite sure we would have played just as well tonight, maybe even better had we used this season's most tried and trusted template of bale and modric on the left with wilson and hudd in the middle.

assuming he is fully fit at the moment, not sure that he is though..

I couldn't possibly give objective ratings after that.

I haven't gone to bed since getting back from Eastlands, my throat is still sore and my heart is still pounding like Keith Moon on drums, even the reality that the tories might be in government tomorrow can't bring me down from this.

I'll sum up my thoughts without ratings, everyone gets a 10 apart from the Spurs fan at Keele service station who ran at me and hugged me upon seeing my Spurs shirt who gets a 12, and the Spurs fan who accidentally hit me in the balls when we scored who gets a 9.

The 2 saves from Gomes were world class, being not too far behind Gomes in the stand I don't think those watching on TV would fully appreciate how late he saw it, it zipped through a melee of players and somehow Gomes made it look comfortable. The second save from Bale? I still can't believe how he clawed it away, it was in I'm sure.

King and Daws were just majestic, and both should go to the WC, and with Capello in attendance they might well do.

Kaboul was monstrous, he's a beast with the heart of a lion. He was even very assured in possession tonight too.

BAE brought his A game out tonight, fucking wonderful stuff. When he plays like that, there are few better.

Bale was Bale.

Crouchy is a warrior, he just battles and battles and never ever gives up. I'm so, so glad he scored the goal that put us into the Champions League... yes that's right the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

To start with i was angry we chose Crouch becasue of all the long balls but becasue city started each half well it was a really vital out ball. As soon as we had weathered both storms, we controlled the ball and the space and respect crouch had earnt himself winning all those flicks early on. he had time to controll the balls played into his feet and chest and we retained a lot of really good ball in the last 25mins of each half.

Great display from him and a great varied use of him by the team, i'm not a convert but i can see more clearly now how useful an option he is and will be next year.

Capello saw about a 3rd of his WC squad play well last night :)
