Cup game against Rochdale in the snow. You need a warrior like Lamela in the team, and he did his job with both ability and feistiness. He was a leader out there today, and my motm. Great to see Llorente getting a hatrick. Rose getting a good run out. KWP did great too. Think, or at least hope, that we see that WB combination on the pitch in some key games going forward. KWP has earned some game time imo.

Poch said in the week Foyth would surprise people, well he was not wrong because it appears some people thought he looked good tonight which is a massive surprise to me. He looked like an accident waiting to happen in the first half, a long straight ball was his (an others) undoing too often for comfort.

For a match we won 6 - 1 there were alot of players I could've forgotten even played, Rose & Sissoko especially, and what's become of the little darling Harry Winks? He was dreadful tonight, I'd treasure that England cap lad if that's how it's going to go for you - we all hope the last few games are a blip after injury.

I gave MOTM to Lamela but on refelection I thought Trippier was very decent with the ball, maybe he's being made took better by Aurier-Eboue though.

I really want us to win the FA cup, COYS.

Harsh winks is quality he will be a great player for us! One bad night after so many good games can be forgiven.

Can I suggest we have a whipround on this site to buy some orange footballs for the Premier League. I mean the Football League had them in the 80s, so its hardly revolutionary new technology ...

Llorente was so much improved second half, really well taken goals and his off the ball movement was so much better...coincidence I think not.

Son and Lamela were also very good, particularly the latter, was involved in absolutely everything we did going forward.

But Lucas Moura was my MOTM, his movement off the ball is great, takes defenders right out of the game, his run in the build up to Son's first goal was instrumental, and the pass to Lamela for Son's second was just perfect.

So pleasing to see such a direct pacy player who can beat players for fun and who has that intelligence and decision making ability. The perfect blend of qualities for an attack minded player and one that we've been missing.

Very excited to see how we do going forward with this guy more involved, he'll be a first team regular starter - only a matter of time imo

Llorente bags a hat trick and still isn't most people's MOTM hah
Very happy for Llorente - but he struggled a bit in the first half, and some of the balls played into him were prettier than his goals.

Still, nice to see him being a presence in front of the goal.

You're having a giraffe. Foyth, Winks and Rose have hardly played. They need game time. Have some patience FFS!

One of the weirdest matches you'll probably ever see. In the end an emphatic scoreline that was mixed with various frustration with a bit of quality every so often.

It start off mainly with VAR and refereeing debacles. That the opening 'goal' was ruled out is possibly the worst decision I have ever seen, and if this is the standard we will get it's going to ruin matches. Llorente gets shirt pulled, then kicked across the shins, then wins a tackle cleanly... But has a foul given against him. Fuck off.

Then we get a couple more decisions made, well I say made.... Fans waited, the sun went down, people came and went about their business, empires fell.... Eventually a penalty was (probably correctly) given, and then chalked off in a manner I cannot recall ever happening before, again with delay. Fans and players alike are left confused and frustrated waiting, and it doesn't help watching on TV either with close ups of the ref fiddling with his ear piece and then replays and so no one has a fucking clue what is going on.

In amongst all this we'd scored a legitimate goal, and so were 1-0 up. However with the decisions debacles going on, and the weather closing in and the pitch getting trickier, we seemed to lose focus. We got sloppier and more erratic across the pitch, and our pig-headedness at inviting pressure and playing out from the back in tricky conditions against a team with nothing to lose has eventually cost us - we conceded one and nearly another in this fashion. As it reached the break we looked all at sea.

At HT the weather seemed to get worse and so you're thinking 'oh fuck, here we go....', but the break seemed to be the worst thing for Rochdale. We grabbed an instant goal, and that was that. The floodgates opened, we blitzed them for three more goals in quick succession, and played out the rest of the game quite comfortably (well I thought so, when you could see where the ball was....). The only final question was if the conditions held out just enough to get us to the final whistle.

For long spells the least satisfying 6-1 win you'll see, due to various factors. We got there in the end though, and another step closer to the end goal.....

Vorm - Got the memo second half, eventually after multiple games, just kick the fucking ball down the park in bad conditions and pitches instead of getting the oppositions tails up.

Trippier - Not great. Constantly out of position first half in particular. As with many improved a bit as the game eased towards it's conclusion.

Foyth - Got a bit better as the game went on but he was also culpable for unnecessary overplaying at the back. Some poor positioning and wtf was he doing for the goal? He's had better nights this year for us.

Dier - He was culpable for the overplaying too, and I think it was he who gave the ball away for the goal. Not great positionially at times and didn't exactly marshal the backline.

Rose - Completes the 'not great positionally a lot of the time' back four, but again better as the game eased up.

Sissoko - Thought he did ok tonight. Moments of frustration of course but decent energy and work rate.

Winks - A real worry at the moment. Looks way short of confidence, rhythm and fitness.

Moura - Some good passages of play, first half especially though I felt he was quiet at times and would like to see him on the ball more.

Lamela - Lots of good, too good for Rochdale, but also lots of times where I just wish he would play simpler and quicker.

Son - Ditto. One nice goal in particular.

Llorente - Ok first half, hat-trick hero in the second... At least he was in positions for once to score goals.

Subs:
Dembele - Did his job to close out the game.
Alli - Joined in the keep ball session, nice assist at the end.
KWP - A fullback jinking around the box, playing a one-two, running in behind, and then slotting home? Can't be having that, back to 19th man in the squad you go, sunshine.

Vorm - 6 - didn't have too much to do. and was mostly dependable when needed

Trippier - 6.5 - he was pretty decent throughout. i felt in the 1st half he was caught out too far up the field at times.
Foyth - 6 - work in progress. those were super shit conditions, against another team that likes to thump it about. he did fine.
Dier - 6 - didn't seem to like the weather very much. but was mostly reliable.
Rose - 4.5 - that was disappointing. he's shown very little enthusiasm or luster when he's been out there recently. today was no better at all. pondersome getting back. erratic in offense.

Sissoko - 6.5 - i thought he was solid at winning the ball tonight and passing it backwards.
Winks - 5 - another tough outing for the little fella. his passing radar is way off at the moment and is starting to look scared out there with all of the backward and side passes. he was fun to watch when he first came in, 'cos he was always looking to be progressive with the ball. something is definitely off.

Son - 6 - he sorta annoyed me tonight at times. he has some bright, lovely moments, and then some odd ones. the penalty was a bit foolish in my opinion. on a night where it was already clear that the ref and var combined were a nightmare, it wasn't the right time to do some trickery.
Moura - 7 - really continues to impress me. couple of assists and some of our best moments were through him.
Lamela - 6.5 - would have been a 7 or 8, but fell off dramatically in the last 30 mins, giving the ball away a lot.

Llorente - 7 - man, i do not like him at times. but you gotta give him credit today, did his job well when it mattered most. (MOM)

Dembele - 6- kept shit steady.
Alli - 6 - would have been a 5, if not for the assist at the end.
KWP - 8 - just cos he scored and tried very hard!!

VAR and the REF - what a bloody disaster that was tonight for the legitimacy of the technology. between the time it took to make the decisions and the fact that three of them were wrong, by some margin, leaves little to be desired. I'm still in favor of VAR, but they need to work through the kinks. One thing they need to consider is that once a decision is made, there needs to be clear, incontrovertible evidence for it to be overturned. Right now, it's putting far too much power at the discretion of the video ref.

I have a feeling Rose plays to the level of opposition - hard to get excited about Rochdale.

Will be interesting to see who lines up against Juventus.

It’s funny that of all our players out with significant injuries, Lamela was out the longest and looks the fittest of them all. What was his injury again lol ;)

Weird game. VAR stands for ‘Very Awful Refereeing’ right?

Vorm makes routine moments nerve racking with his failure to make the logical choice.

Trippier struggled way more than he should have against this opposition. Got into good forward positions without delivering.

Foyth had his quest game for us, reading of the gene definitely off and resulted in over committing to challenges uncharacteristically early on a few occasions.

Dier played out poorly and was pushed around in the first half when he should’ve been comfortable.

Rose needs to be googled by the commentator. In all seriousness, poor game. Looked lazy and disinterested.

Sissoko was fine running in straight lines. Several heavy touches.

Winks looked a boy amongst men, lacked both in brain and brawn.

Moura was man of the match, so positive and does everything at pace. What a good passer he is.

Lamela had some good moments, should’ve had a goal and was involved in most that was good about us. Dawdled way too much on occasion though.

Son scored twice, was victim to idiocy over his penalty and like Lamela was involved in most good that we did.

Llorente scored a perfect hatrhck and showed great composure for the first. Loved that dummy shot with his right before slotting home the second with his left.

Dembele helped us see our the gene calmly and without calamity.

Dele played a lovely through ball for our sixth and had a beautiful dribble.

KWP was purposeful, direct, quick in foot and thought and very aware. I know he played full back but looks an inside forward to me. Nice goal.

Well that was a crazy bag of spanners.

The VAR half will fo course get a lot of heat. But the bottom line is, Llorente probably did have a hold of their guy (who also had a hold of him, but two wrongs etc), and without VAR that never would have been given as a penalty, the ref would have given it as a free kick outside the box, and though I've seen players hesitate many, many times, I have actually never seen anyone completely stop, and keep stopping, and keep stopping some more, and then tap it in. You could argue the toss about both that went against us, if VAR was being totally accurate, did the encroachment occur before Son took his mid penalty vacation ? Who fucking knows. But I reckon, just as with any contentious decision, whoever's on the wrong end of it will always bleat the most, tonight it was us.

Poch's subs have always been a bit twighlight zone, but tonight's really went to another dimension of weird. Winks had had a very poor first half, but he's a kid with a handful of starts, he was showing signs of improvement second half, and once we were 4-1 up, surely to god you could keep him on, let him get those much needed minutes and build a bit of confidence, god knows we might need him at some point in the near future and it would be better to have him with a bit of confidence in tact rather than completely demoralised having been subbed off again in circumstances like this. Second time running Poch has hauled him off just as he was settling down. And to bring on the chronically injured Dembele in such a crazy game, at 4-1 up, just why ? Fucking madness ?

Then he takes Son off, rather than Lamela - who was on a yellow, and a slippery pitch - to bring on Alli ? Did that game really need Alli risked either ?

It was great to see KWP score his goal, you just know how much that meant to the kid, just a shame that instead of risking Dembele and Alli, Poch didn't see the benefit in maybe taking Trippier off, saving him, and giving KWP 30 minutes at RB.

Lamela was the usual bag of revels, some honeycomb, some chocolate button, but also some rock hard toffee and fucking raisons.

Son was son, couple of goals, a great assists and some fuckery pokery.

Moura was lively.

Llorente scored some goals.

Will it? Davies will obviously start.
Davies makes the most sense, given his form - but he will play against Huddersfield on the weekend. Just as Trippier played today and will start against Juve - Rose could also get the start in a straight rotation.

Davies should not be taxed too much against Huddersfield - but given how Poch likes to rotate fullbacks, I would not categorically rule out Rose getting the start next week.
