Poch has also continually got his FB rotation wrong, Aurier would have much more logical away at Swansea, where his pace and defending would have been more useful for their counters, whilst Trippier more logical in a game like this where his final ball might just have made a difference, or even better in the 3CB system as a WB.

Aurier - OK defensively, but absolutely nothing offensively of tangible quality.
You seem to stick in a blind mode when you dont fancy a player. How on earth can you say that Aurier didn't offer anything offensively when he was responsible for starting most of our chances which we squandered? The chances didnt seem tangible because our forwards fucked up!

Son - He tried really hard tonight, and did some good things, in many ways that was one of his best games in a Spurs shirt, I certainly can't remember him ever seeing that much of the ball and being that sure footed with it throughout, (55 passes 87%) but but it just wasn't rolling, then he hit an absolute beauty. But what I loved most was his post match interview. When asked if that was one of his best goals, he replied frankly, dejectedly "It's not important right now, beautiful goal, dirty goal, it's not important, I'm just upset for the three points". I loved his demeanour, he was truly fucked off, and I felt like he competed me and Riggi.
.

Son is really amazing. His attitude is prefect when everyone else are dejected. Keep trying. Really want him to be with us with a longer time

Forgive me Bullet, I must have missed the actual real chances of quality that Aurier created that our forwards fucked up, perhaps you could remind me?

Obviously it's a difficult task. We played just 48 hours ago, and we're faced with a team who had no interest in leaving their penalty area and had put the brick wall up. We did huff and puff, you cant really fault the effort of the players, I just don't think what we are doing in these types of games is enough to challenge teams across the 90 mins, ask enough questions, and create top quality chances. Even if we had won that say 2-0, I'd think the same.

In general our play needs to be sharper. As I said at half time... We aren't passing it well enough, we aren't moving well enough to offer options for the man on the ball, there's a lack of vision out there, players take too many touches - this is the real killer, even if they eventually do something good with the ball - and all this just leads to a lack of tempo and zip in our game. That happens and you do just go from side to side and struggle for any concerted pressure.

And as I also said in the match thread, I think this team really needs to evolve its attacking structures and pattern play which would help in these games. To go with the slight 'faults' I mentioned previously we lack a bit tactically with the ball - small groups of players for instance who are working in sync and interchanging and interlinking. Look at the flanks for instance, how many times did the ball get worked towards the left but both Son and Davies were inside and so no one was there to be slipped in on the overlap? But then on the right, frequently we try to work the ball to Aurier, but Sissoko has blindly charged out there, dragged a man over with him, and killed his team mates space... And they're just the most obvious examples I can give. I do think we need to strive to have better structures in place to fall back on and as a unit read the game better at times and work more harmoniously.

You can point the finger at individuals, but ultimately that tactical direction comes from Poch and it's on him to keep improving the team. I was also disappointed in him tonight how late he made the subs. He waited until he was forced into it, rather than being proactive and doing something about a cm2 that just wasn't working.

People might point to the stats, the bad luck of their strike out of the blue, and that we had enough scrappy chances to win.... But across 90 mins, I honestly don't think we produced enough real quality moments and so you're always asking for trouble when it comes to the result.

Lloris - First instinct for the goal was that no shot from any distance/angle should have crept past him inside the post.... I dunno. Made a decent save towards the end though.

Aurier - One of more competent performers.

Sanchez - A few dodgy moments and struggled a little to thread passes up pitch. Not helped by what was happening in front of him though.....

Vertonghen - Pretty solid game. Also struggled to move the ball up the pitch.

Davies - Meh.

Dier - 50% of the midfield black hole.

Sissoko - 50% of the midfield black hole.

Eriksen - The one light in amongst possession-ball mediocrity. The only one capable of finding space between the lines. The only one capable of threading passes through the lines. He cant do it all himself, every single time though.

Alli - Too many touches, too slow.

Son - Thanks for the goal, but too many touches and too slow.

Kane - Lets be honest, offered the square root of fuck all other than to pop up occasionally and barbecue a half chance.

Subs:
Wanyama - A bit rusty a couple of times.
Lamela - Ok.
Llorente - The usual. Came on, we largely refused to put any crosses in the box and thus he becomes redundant.

Should Kane have taken that chance 1st time in 1st half when headed across ? Not sure why he tried to have a touch.

I know we’ve had injury concerns. But we really need to get a settled CM duo now whoever it May Be. We need that solidity of wanyama/dembele or wanyama/winks.

Dele wasn’t god awful but he was quite poor. Credit to him for always wanting to try something positive and he took responsibility, but his dawdling and overdoing it wasted several of our most positive opportunities when we were on top during a bright start.

Spot on regarding this. Very frustrating!!!

Id forgotten how boring Moyes is - I dont remember the last time I saw a team make so little effort to win a game. Im really upset with Sissoko - I forgot he was on the pitch for the first 20 minutes or so and his lackadaisical closing down allowed Obiang's strike. But really he should have been off at the half. I cant remember criticizing Poch before but Sissoko offered nothing today and that was evident early.

Everyone else was ok.

We all knew except Poch, Sissoko should never be started at home against bus parkers. however, Sissoko started and this was the result we deserved.

beautiful 50 yard ball from Verts or Dier on an Aurier run that Aurier headed across the box to Kane, who's first touch let him down. And Kane was unmarked.

Somebody tell me what Poch was supposed to do today? Dembele, Winks and Wanyama weren’t fit to play the full 90. Rose was out. He played the best lineup he had available.

We didn’t play well but we didn’t play poorly either. We out shot them 31 to 3. Kane and Alli both had opportunities to score but bad first touches prevented them from doing so. Aurier put just a touch too much on a header or Kane scores. We had the ball ping pong around in their box about 57 times never falling our way. Any other day we score 3 or 4.

It wasn’t a “defensive masterclass” by Spam. We just got unlucky. It happens. Poch has gotten some things wrong this year but this match wasn’t one of them.

Whilst you can't legislate against a wonder strike and one of their only shots at goal, let alone on target all game, this was fundamentally down to Poch not being proactive and recognising that our cumbersome 'dynamic duo' of Dier and Sissoko was totally the wrong personnel in winning a football match against a team of pure bus parkers.

We needed wit, craft and someone to pass between the lines quicker rather than plodding across allowing West Ham to reinforce their defensive wall.

No ratings but i'd just love to know what Poch's rationale is here because it's completely counter-intuitive to what we were all seeing played out in front of us.
Completely agree with this. It's incredibly frustrating to be a regular ol fan, and can tell, without a shadow of doubt, that the team he selected was awful. It was clear as day. David Moyes must have been so pleased to see a CM of Sissoko and Dier. And a team full of players likely exhausted from playing on a rain soaked field two days ago. All they had to do was sit back and defend against a very slow, tired team. Not for the first time this year, Poch has totally fucked up thenteam selection and in game management. Love, love, love him.... But today was oddly poor... Borderline stupid.

bring on Lamela for Sissoko at half time, instead of after they scored. Ive defended Sissoko plenty this year but he wasnt at the races today and ultimately culpable for their goal. I honestly believe the reason Sissoko was so deep is because Poch recognized this and pushed Dier a little forward. If you realize that why not put Lamela forward and keep Dier back?
