If you believe that those on show today will propell us into a team challenging for honours, Sarr and Kane being exceptions, then prepared to be disappointed. Why play a system that relies on QUALITY wingbacks when we have just one beggars belief, and accept the fact we need a big big change in personnel. At my time of life I cannot see I will ever see a great Spurs team and I may well join the boneyard in the sky still saying fucking crap.

None of the players you’ve mentioned are 1st choice so yes that is the definition of 2nd string team ;)

We lack creativity at wing back, CM and up front as Gil is still raw, we have no Kulu or Bentancur and Son is playing with restricted vision.

Never going to be an easy game where we just dispatch them with ease, these lower league sides come and set up well and defend for their lives.

That being said we totally dominated possession and had I think 18 shots to 3 so it was fairly comfortable overall.
I disagree its a squad game made up of a squad of around 24players. Would richarlison and Bissouma be considered 2nd string? Because they not in the 1st team?

It's a squad game. I'm losing patience with the logic of tip toeing around Conte and he can't be questioned or be up to scrutiny. He has a squad use it. Is there a drop off from Sanchez to Romero or Deki to Gill... the answer is yes....but then train and develop that squad and if a player is just mot good enough based on ability or attitude then move them on.

I think this is an often-misused or misunderstood term.

A "squad game" means that over the course of a season, you should expect different players to have to step up at different times.

It does not mean you start 9 players from your second-string, and expect the same performance as from your starting XI.

First or second choice players I don't really think it matters.

They were once again flat and not good enough with the ball.

Whether it be the ineffectiveness of Sonny or tactics there is an issue here that keeps popping up.

Today was mind numbingly dull.

But we march on, hopefully we can turn over the scum next week and if we do it can be as boring as one of my posts. Who cares

I get that.

I will just say for me - I enjoyed the game - even with some of the short-comings. I paid close attention to Sarr, and really enjoyed watching him work. Seeing Bryan, coming off his game against Palace, and seeing his energy - I enjoyed that.

Watching Skipp - it wasn't always pretty - but, I want to see him succeed, so seeing him continue to get back to fitness was worth the watch.

Kane, was worth the watch.

I wanted to see how Sess and Royal got on - it was not always pretty, but watching to see how they would react today was worth the watch.

Seeing Devine come on late was exciting. Seeing Spence come on, caught me off-guard, since I thought we we keep him out, but another opportunity to check on his progress.

Yeah, the game was not pretty - but Pompey did what you would expect, and we struggled to create against a compact side - most teams will do that. I still enjoyed watching specific aspects of the game.

Pretty poor performance overall. Sarr impressed again in the middle. I hope he has convinced Conte that he should stay rather than go out on loan this month.

Moved from our Season tickets high in the South the posh middle of the South today. Yeah... it's um... very polite round those parts. No much singing or fun but... very polite.

Anyway job done and congrats to the Pompey fans who did themselves proud all day (and on the tube home).

Gil has appetite and enthusiasm ,if it doesn't work he seems to dust himself down and go again .These are great attributes belief and attitude can make you go far ,think we should stick with this kid.

Agree, Sess in unable to beat the last man and get a cross in and as for all the goals he scored for Fulham, he seems a long way off
Really disappointed in him today….and this was his chance to prove he was worth starting and he didn’t even come close to taking it. There was one particular instance in the 2nd half where the ball was played in front of him to run onto and he made sure the defender got there before him……that was it for me.

You believe that was a 2nd string team ? Sanchez, Emerson, Sessegnon, Skipp all have over 30 years appearsnce at PL level.

We should be dispatching teams like pompey with relative ease... especially at home.

We did.

I get you and agree in the main. I don't believe in a starting 11 per se.... they just become stale. But yeah I understand your point.

Really.... scoreline didn't reflect it... Kane and Son played to the end.... that wasn't with ease. Anyway.... next week will be telling. Because that's what my original point was when I entered this thread....we play Continuously in 2nd gear.

They really didn't cause us much issue and we won, and should have been by more.

Pompey set up to defend and catch us on the break. They defended brilliantly, but never really threatened. For once I was able to watch Spurs without any real concern as to the outcome. Only one team was going to win that, but they made us work for it.

The scoreline often doesn't reflect the game, but 72% possession, 18 shots and 9 corners does. Pompey barely got out of their half. We are in poor form and played our second string bar Kane and Son, against a team who turned up to camp and not concede. If we'd been sharper after the goal we'd have scored more, but we were sloppy and missing our most creative players.

We absolutely brushed them aside. There was zero threat that we wouldn't win today except our own struggle to finish chances.

Next week will be telling indeed, today was irrelevant to our current position/form/outlook. It was just a game to get won and done.

Skipp should have scored and Emerson was unlucky not to.

It wasn't an entertaining game, but we never looked like we were under any pressure
