Have to agree, at best our central midfield was pedestrian, no real flair, vision or intelligence, they played some ill considered passes to players getting closed rather than other options with space and didn't exactly provide the defence with any great protection. They are willing workers but limited in what they offer
That said I think playing only two in CM places a big burden on whatever two players even players we don't have.
I actually enjoyed Stambouli's cameo, at least he seemed to use a bit of intelligence in his passing and a desire to get the ball forward
Mason and Bentaleb may not be the answer-but they are certainly asking the questions.

I don't want to give up on lamela I really don't. But he needs to do so much more. We aren't good enough to carry passengers and I'm afraid on performances like his last 3 he is a passenger. I hope we give him time but by god he is nowhere near it at the minute
Have to bounce this post. Says it all

Just seen some post match interviews. Whats with Monks moaning?..they deserved to win...spurs just lucky cause of individual mistakes....and the exact same thing happened to them last week. No credit to spurs whats so ever. Makes the 3 points even sweeter.

I wish people would judge Lamela on a level playing field like any other player.

The problem is that he is being judged by his price tag.

If like Mason (is older) he had come up from the youths people would be raving about his potential etc.

He is at the moment a victim of expectation.
Yes and no. Its not Lamela's fault that we overpaid for him - on that I agree. But, he represents ~£26M of assets, and we should expect £26M in value - which is not there yet. For that kind of value, it is fair to expect a player who is a quality starter in the league - and Lamela, for all of his potential, is not that.

Having said that, he is 22, and still shows lots of potential - and is better than the other options we have right now. I would definitely hold here, and continue to give him games. He needs to bulk up a bit, learn to use his right foot, and learn not to dwell on the ball so much - but he is hardly alone in any of those categories.

Stambouli has done enough to start a league game now don't you think? Reads the game so well and loves a tackle.

I think Stambouli would do better as a single DM - where he can sit deeper, and not get caught up field - his lack of pace still scares me in this set-up - but with Walker back in the fold, we are getting more recovery pace back, where maybe Stambouli wouldn't have to race back as often.

I wish people would stop branding Lamela as "useless" and a "waste of space". Now I know he hasn't set the place alight, apart from a couple of EL performances and the rabona, and past performance in his short career is no guide to future performance. But he has probably achieved more in his short career than those constant whingers in theirs. Give the lad some respect. At the age of 7 Barcelona offered his family €100000 per year to take him to Spain, ala Messi. He didn't go but subsequently played well enough for River Plate for Roma to splash out €15M. He scored plenty in Serie A. He was brought to Spurs, fast becoming the Bermuda Triangle for expensive footballers and is struggling. I haven't given up on him yet. Not quite.

I don't believe people are waiting to pounce on any mistakes by Lamela, in fact I think the opposite is true. We are all desperate for him to play well and I desperately look for any signs of improvement and quality. I am just not seeing it, Routledge looked the far more skilful, accomplished and dangerous player, as does any winger we come up against. Right now he needs to be dropped and he needs to force his way into the team from the bench.

Absolutely horse shit in here nowadays. Same faces slating Lamela/Team/Poch. Cant even have a decent debate. Like a bunch of extras from Arsenal TV.

Routledge has been playing in England all his life. He was shit for 6 of those. How good was he when he was a similar age to Eric?

I agree. Stambouli and Eriksen in the middle for me.. Ok, Stambouli and Mason and then gradually try out Eriksen in the middle against lesser opposition. I will not accept we can ever again be as good without a 'Modric' in the middle of the pitch and Eriksen has the potential to become that influential if he has a decent DM next to him.

That's why I said this papers over cracks. Sure we got 3 points today. We'll get 0 and 1 more often than not playing like that. It's just not good enough, there's nothing about our play that looks good.

I'll keep an eye out for your posts when we lose our next game.
If we lose, rest assured that I won't think the sky will cave in.
