Was thinking about the team this morning and managed to completely forget we signed Wanyama!

WInks has been impressive in pre-season but this maybe too much of a 'in at the deep end situation' - i'd keep him on the bench as one to turn to if things aren't going to plan.

Hugo
Walker - Fit CB - Toby - Rose
Dier - Wanyama
Eriksen - Alli - Lamela
Kane
Have a feeling it will be CCV at centre back.

Slight concern around the lack of creativity in the midfield but then Dier was England's most creative player at the Euros so if he can pick a pass or two we will be ok.

Based on if Wimmer/Vert aren't fit, I reckon it will be

Lloris
Walker, Dier, Toby, Rose
Wanyama, Mason
Lamela, Alli, Eriksen
Kane

Great shout, everyone seems to have forgotten that Ben can play CH if both Verts and Wimmer are injured. Can see Poch picking him ahead of CCV and no way do I see Dier moved back from CM.

Not sure I agree. I think our defence would be a weaker moving Davies to CB(where has never made a prem appearance there). Than it would moving Dier back there and using Wanayama in his place in DM.

I can't be certain but I think he played there for Swansea and was excellent for Wales at CH in the Euros.

I'm not sure about Swansea but he was part of a back three for Wales in the Euros, which is a whole different ball game then being part of CB partnership in an attacking team in the prem.

From what I have seen of the preseason, I believe the team will be

Lloris, Trippier, Rose, CCV, Alderweireld, Dier, Mason, Lamela, Alli, Eriksen and Kane.

I think Trippier due to match practice and will be in better shape than Walker, CCV has played the majority of preseason and is getting better by the game.

Dier will be a mainstay for the team, he's so importance to us. It really depends on how much respect we'll pay Everton on whether Wanyama or Mason will play. Mason does make intelligent forward runs and although he hasn't scored yet he has had some very good opportunities, that is something Wanyama does not offer.

The rest of the team really picks itself at this stage of the season.

Mason scored a cracking team goal away at Sunderland last season.

He's played CB for us. Although it was only for the last 20 or so minutes of a game. Looked good though.

I could easily see him being a Daley Blind level of CB.

Okay, I can't remember that. Even so, it would be more logical to move Dier back - who has actually trained a lot of his career as centre back and played well for us there during his first season. Than to throw Davies in, who has never started a game for us at CB. In addition by Wanyama deputising in DM for Dier we won't be losing too much in midfield either.

Not sure. Davies has played CB for Swansea as well, I think its a decent shout. Dier's been fantastic in midfield and his passing is getting better and better, I'd reckon we'd miss that.

I'd play CCV or Davies at CB if Jan and Kev are ruled out.

I'm not at all convinced CCV will be able to handle Lukaku. He's a big lad, but I wouldn't give him his PL debut against the most physically gifted striker in the league and possibly the world.
With Dier and Wanyama in midfield we won't have to worry about Lukaku because he'll never see the ball.

I don't think he has what is needed to actually be classified as a fullback.

Well, I agree and I disagree. He is more of a defending fullback than an attacking fullback and in that sense, he isn't quite what people want as a modern fullback. But his passing has impressed me and what I like about him is how he overlaps to the corner of the box and has quite a good shot from there and plays one-twos.

Either way, he is an excellent player to have in the squad.

He is IMO probably the least good of all our senior defenders so "excellent" is pushing it for me. We should retrain him as a CB and sell him to Hull when Dawson retires. The idea of "defending fullback" is just another way to say that he is not suited for the modern game at a top level PL club.
