Friedel and Cuducini for next season, while we bring up this young keeper we keep hearing about, is not the worst of ideas. If Friedel fails then CUd is more then good enough to cover. The problem is we need to buy a proven PL goalkeeper if Gomes goes, one which is used to the league so they don't have to go through the whole process of adapting or what not. We can rotate this young goalkeeper into the squad in CC games and europa league games. Its a good idea, on the basis that Gomes wants to leave (which seems the case)

Although Friedel is perhaps not the finest goalkeeper on the market, he's a solid Premier League Goalie... Although I think Gomes has his good days, I find this Gomes love-in going on on this board somewhat bizarre and disturbing - have you forgotten the numerous howlers he has made this season?

I'm sure the response will be yes, but then look at all those incredible world class saves he has made! Well yes thats true, he has made a few of those... but for me a goalkeeper should mainly be about stability and a platform to build from - Gomes gives no confidence whatsoever to his back four, his distribution is mainly terrible, although he's improved on set pieces he still looks uncomfortable, he punches 50% of things he should really be catching and it's no good making great saves if you can't do these simple things well..

Surely there must be a better keeper we can sign. Your telling me that our world class scouts couldn't find one in the whole world? Pathetic.

Instead they settle for one who's coming off a poor season and is only gonna last another season if he picks his game up.

My sentiments exactly. While Gomes can be a world-class keeper on his day, he also makes heaps of simple mistakes that have cost us several games this year. Gomes' mistakes plus our lack of any in-form strikers cost us UCL qualification this season. The season before this last one I'd say he was the best keeper in the league, but this season was a real regression for him.

Altough I have only seen him play one game, and some clips on youtube, I would rather keep Pletikosa than sign Friedel.

Brad Friedel is a Keeper who has been fantastic. This was about 5 years ago. Since then he has declined. You ask any Villa fan and they will tell you that he is currently not very good. I cant see a move improving that now at his age.

Would be a crying shame to lose a keeper like Gomes to have him replaced by Friedel

Funny that United just won the title and got to the European Cup Final with a keeper that just turned 40 too...
Daniel I have a lot of time for you and your posts, but your having a absolute mare with this one. To even suggest Brad is anywhere near VDS is a absolute joke.....

I agree mate but you have to remember we have the scouts that said Suarez wasn't good enough for us. They obviously are gooners.

Redknapp does get the best out of acing players but I can't see this signing being a success.

Is it not the case that the scouts probably said Suarez plays in Van Der Vaart's position and is therefore not the type of striker we were looking for?

Yes it is the worst of ideas. Next season is crucial. Our best players will leave if we are not back at the top table.

We cannot spend a year bedding in a new keeper while playing an ancient Aston Villa were happy to let go. And we should not start such an important summer with a signing that screams averageness, settling and financial timidity.

And let's be clear, being back at the top table will involve finishing higher than one of these teams: Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City; and finishing once more ahead of Liverpool.
Would any of them consider for the briefest moment getting Friedel in as first choice (OK, maybe Arsenal briefly...)?

Why do we need to sign a proven PL goalkeeper if Gomes goes? Gomes was unproven in the PL when we signed him, wasn't he? Same argument goes for all the non-PL goalies out there.

I'd like to see a proper long-term replacement if we'd sell Gomes. Stephane Ruffier from Monaco definitely deserves a look at. Fits the bill perfectly imho.

Yes Gomes was unproven and he took a long time to settle, he himself said it was a complete diffrent experience then he was used to. I was saying if we are to sign an unproven young keeper (which seems the case) then if Gomes goes it would be best to sign a proven goalkeeper to tend the goal while the other goalkeeper gets used to his surrounding. I actually like Cudicini as N1 as a temporary measure, but we need three keepers, if Gomes goes we have one. If Friedel is willing to come in as a back up keeper for no money none the less then I'm more then willing to give him a chance.

Terrible argument.

1.) VDS has now retired from football.
2.) Friedal is no VDS.
3.) Spurs are no Utd.

I don't mind us signing a Gomes replacement, but he has to be a clear upgrade on Gomes, which Friedal is definitely not.

VDS could have gone on for a few more years at a high level, but he chose not to, largely influenced by his wife's illness reportedly. Personally I want 4th next year, and I think with Gomes not letting the ball trickle through his legs every other week, we have more of a chance of that.

Friedel is a good organiser of a defence, and still and excellent shot-stopper.
