Good thread this one, plenty of well balanced thoughts and idiocy kept to a minimum.
I agree with a lot of whats been said, there is a point I would like to add though.

A gentleman guest on 5 live a couple of weeks back suggested that we have actually over-achieved for the last two years, and it got me thinking that perhaps he is spot on. In turn this is obviously testament to the fantastic job Jol and his staff did with the squad available, but I never felt far away from a defensive mishap or failure to achieve a clean sheet. We could attack with the best of them, but looked far from water tight at the back.
I was at the city game in midweek and was astonished at how organised the new setup has managed to get the team working. City never looked like scoring - we were too solid, and with a makeshift lineup and 10 men!
With additions in the summer and hopefully some coming in January, this squad can go places. Next year who knows what we can achieve. This year, we're a bit like leeds in having a deficit to make up.
Also is there anyone else who thinks Arsenal in the semis of the CC is the best draw? If we play like we did against City and have some players return from injury I think we'll make the final. Luck will play its part in the final, however over 2 legs in the semis, the best team should come out on top. I think it will be us.

Merry Christmas to all. :)

Great positive outlook, but let's be realistic too: if we don't qualify for Europe this year, a few players will leave. It's inevitable. So it isn't quite as simple as 'OK lads, let's write off this season'. Building is all well and good but we have to face that it may not be with some of the players we currently have.

Merry Xmas

I can't believe you think that's being positive! That would be a disappointing season for me.

Says who? I have no reason to believe that players will leave just because they'll have to spend a season not playing teams like Aalborg and Anderlecht! Half the team joined when we weren't even in europe and I doubt the newer players would be that bothered. Berba describes the CL as "just another game". What's important to most of them is playing at a big club, particularly in London.

I soooo much want a League Title....but......that will have to wait for another season, at least! That said, we are more than capable of winning or NOT loosing the rest of our league games. A tall order but even the Scummers confessed to looking at their North London neighbours in a new light, after the game last week. That made my heart swell which reminded me of the Good 'ol days in the 60's, 70's, 80's. It is a long long time since I have felt this good about our club and it's future. However this is Tottenham and we all know that we are well versed in shooting 'wide', on occasion! Here's hoping COYS!

I guess we shall see. I really hope you're right, but players say a lot of things to get the press/fans off their back.

I'm not worried. we are progressing in a manner similar to last season. we are a better team now so we should still get the 4th position we need.

We need Berba and another striker to go on-fire.

Steed to get into scoring positions.

CBs to concentrates.

Thats it.

Not worried about the current state of affairs in the league table, remember it's what the table looks like at the end of the season

6 pts in the next 2 games will make our position look a lot better, plus I really think we'll make a big surge up the table in the final 2/3 months of the league as our final 7/8 league games are all winnable IMO

i dont know if i'm right or wrong here, but didnt we win 9 out of our last 10 games last season ?? Thats 27 points out of 30 ! Were more than capable of having an improvement in the second half of this season, we cant get any worse than we started - so i say "Watch us GO !!!" - Beware Rival Teams , Were Back On The March !

...and now our 'King - The Ledley' is back too, which will certainly give stability to our defense. Don't worry guys, we have enough about us to surprise everyone like previous seasons. :)

So our last 5 games have seen 4 wins.

We have doubled our points tally in only a month and yet we are still only in 12th.
I definitely think we can still make 7th this year but I have to wonder - who would we overtake?? The top half of the table is unbelievably competitive this season, we really need to win against our rivals (starting with villa on tuesday) if we are going to have a chance of qualifying for europe via the league this season.

All of a sudden we're very much in touching distance of the teams above us. Blackburn, Newcastle and West Ham are hardly prpducing good results on a regular basis so if we keep it up we'll be in the top half chasing the top 6 in no time. We really do write ourselves way too early, we were in a similar position last season and we got 5th. Problem is this season Man City and Everton are much stronger than they were before.

Some hard league games coming up away to Villa and Chelsea but we can pick up some points here.

i do believe we can gun down aston villa, blackburn, west ham, newcastle and portsmouth, no prob. that is, of course, if we keep playing like we are playing (reading game aside!).

but man city and everton. don't think we will catch them.

so like i said on page one, it's still 7th to 9th position.

I did the bbc predictor again yesterday and the best I could get realistically was 9th and with some over-optimistic predicions got us to 7th. So our best hope of eurofootie next year is a cup win.
