The journalist Adam Blackmore has tweeted a story that Cortese wanted to fire Pochettino in December and the players talked Cortese out of it. I think that's a good sign for the kind of loyalty Pochettino can instill. I don't know if he'll work out but I can't wait to find out.

Fire him for what?

and then Cortese leaves instead mmm.

They had a bad run of form in December as they picked up a few injuries and ran into some of the bigger clubs on the schedule. Sounds like a knee-jerk thing from Cortese.

As I have posted on the De Boer thread, it would appear that Poch is pretty much a done deal. Whilst I would be ok with his appointment if he was the only decent option, I will be angry if Levy has overlooked an outstanding candidate like De Boer.

If Poch is appointed this week it would mean that De Boer hasn't even been interviewed yet as he is in Indonesia with Ajax until the 18th.

If both are interviewed and Levy goes with Poch, fair enough. But to not even bother talking to someone with such a strong cv and who, more importantly, clearly wants the job is a joke.

Is there any good articles or opinion pieces people have read on Poch and his achievements to persuade me he is the one? The one by the Ajax bloke of De Boer made me think he is the dog's bollocks.

I can't quite believe the support that Poch is getting. I have nothing against the guy but what has he achieved to warrant being manager of our club? I just don't get it. He done well with the Saints in his first full season but not as good as Laudrup did at Swansea and where is he now? Poch is obviously a decent coach but c'mon guys they have bloody good players, 3 are going to the WC with England opposed to our NIL and as a settled squad they are better then us at the moment because we don't even know what our best eleven is! Yet they finish 15-16 points behind us in the league and we had a change of manager mid season in one of the most frustrating seasons ever. It may come back to haunt me and Poch may turn out to be the next Martinez in a season or two but at the moment I think it represents a massive risk.

this is essentially like appointing Laudrup after his first season with Swansea...(although Swansea won something).... second season... has a shocker ... gets the boot...

How do you know he hasn't been interviewed before he went to Indonesia?

Except this was effectively his second season for Southampton, and he improved them again this season to finish 'best of the rest' after the top 7

Disagree massively. The fact that they hadn't won it for so long, and that no one has ever won it four times in a row is a really big deal. Also your point on the structure is off the mark too, when he came in the club was in a bit of a mess and he went about reorganising the structure.

That said I think Pochetino has done a good job too.

We're in danger of people picking sides and rather than seeing the benefits of all the options, just playing games of my dad's bigger than your dad.

Both have strengths, both have weaknesses.

I'm not sure the worth of trying to undermine the strengths of each manager over and over again.

nb: Not aiming this all strictly at you Moose.

They'd lost the previous season by a couple of points. The season they won they did so on a reduced points, suggesting the immediate competition had got worse and the whole of the top of the league including them had got relatively worse. The years when they weren't winning they were generally there or there abouts and they are, were, and probably always will be the biggest club in Holland.

Yes back a few pages in the thread. There's a bbc one, and two very good profiles from Sid Lowe and Balague. There is also a similar tactical break down to the FDB one somewhere in here.

Finally those that watched sky sports season review suggested Gary Neville rated Poch's coaching ability very highly based on what he'd seen this season.

True... Rogers finished 11th with Swansea... Laudrup took that same squad...improved that squad to finish 9th, and win the league cup... then got fired the following season..

You could take the same facts to say that the year they won it, the lower points was because it was more competitive across the board. Depends what your agenda is.

Second season is always tough for a club that exceeds expectation in their first season or even a managers first season at the club. Take Swansea. A Cup win and decent league performance. Next season they arent a surprise package, they lost Michu for most of the season, the have Europa league to contend with. Its a much harder season for them. The third season, for me, and very few managers make it that far, is the one which I think is the crucial one. Can the manager regroup and come back stronger having learnt from the previous season, or does the teams poor form continue. I think managers deserve a chance to put it right. Much like Harry after our first collapse in the league. He deserved a chance to go again, learn from the previous season. Evidently he didnt, as there was anothe capitulation.

Laudrup may well have had Swansea flying again next season, we'll never know, because of the trigger happy nature of Chairmen in this league. i dont think that makes him a bad manager all of a sudden.

Definitely appeared to be some politics going on there. A lot of laudrups success came from his excellent transfers from Spain, and IIRC there were a lot of complaints from Swansea fans that their play was deteriorating post Rodgers.

That's why I said 'relatively' worse.

Laudrup's training methods were also called into question, didnt like training in the rain etc lol
