From next season Dutch clubs will be able to name 12 substitutes for each match instead of seven. KNVB think it will help promote youth.

Its been debated before. Wonder if PL will follow with something similar ?

Yes because the youth will actually play more:rolleyes:
9/10 times the youth wont play. It's up to the managers to play them and they usually dont.

International competition is a 7 man bench. Club football should also be a 7 man bench across the board. I am tired of this 5 man bench and 12 man bench crap.

I have said a few times but it's normally poo-pooed but I think they could have a 4th sub allowed once all 3 have been used but it must be a club trained u21 player. Could be a way to guarantee the youth get more game time.

Before anything like this is implemented, we need the FA to introduce maximum wage limits on players 19 and under, otherwise teams like Chelsea and Man City will just horde the top talent to make sure they have a quality option available as the 4th sub (or whatever the rule may be). I think if teams like WBA can offer the same wages as Chelsea to their youngsters, then, from the players POV, more emphasis will be on development opportunities and quality of coaching.

Personally, if a youth wage cap was introduced (and once we have left the EU), I would like to see 2 rules introduced, firstly, minimum of 3 English players in the first 11 and the second rule, 2 of the 7 subs must be club trained (defined by the current club trained criteria).

ManCity has joined ManU, Arsenal, Liverpool, and of course Spurs in decling to take part in the EFL Trophy. Apparently they are now inviting in some Championship sides.

I wonder if they will consider changing the rules so its attractive to PL Academy sides ?
Good. I'm all for the promotion of youth football (and especially Spurs youth football), but not at the cost of another sly whittling away at the raison d'etre for lower league football clubs across the country. I get the feeling that if the powers that be had their way the Lutons and Crewes of the world would be abolished and we'd move closer to an American franchise sports model where all the grass roots games were branded Z-team versions of 20 permanent non-relegatable Premier League clubs. Fuck that shizzle.

(@Spursidol just want to be clear that I'm not suggesting that's what you want to see happen, just the piece of news you mention in your post inspired me to a mini-rant about that bit of news, as this is something I feel really strongly about.)

There's still a lot of work to be done about time wasting before that would work though unfortunately

I must admit I have conflicting views on this :

1. I do think we need to find a better way to get youth players playing against adults, and much prefer the idea of the ELF cup (with more convenient scheduling than that proposed) and/or a tie up with a Swindon or other sides allowing us to loan some players to (maybe a maximum of say 6)

2. I certainly do not want to get rid of the likes of Luton or Crewe, and think more needs to be done to channel some funds from PL to these clubs - and hence PL sponsoring for £1m the ELF cup (replacing Johnson's Paints who did not wish to renew and in the absence of other sponsors) seemed a sensible way forward to start with.

Vincent Jannsen is an interesting example of a top academy getting it wrong.

Released by Feyenoord (whose academy is top notch, over half the Dutch squad at last WC had trained there, so arguably better than Ajaz) at aged 19.

Spends 2 years in Dutch 2nd division, before (within 12 months) becoming top scorer in Dutch league with AZ and scoring 3 goals in 5 matches for the Netherlands national team, followed by AZ's record transfer fee to Spurs.

Bet Feyenoord are kicking themselves !

josh does seem to be strolling a little, i guess this is why no manager trusts him enough to start him deeper. when he's had the ball he's been decent but just hasn't been involved enough, though that's perhaps down to england surrendering possession once they went 2-0 up.

Only just turned the England game on. Disappointing to hear onomah is having a quiet game. I'd really like to see him given a chance centrally for us this season at some point but it doesn't sound like he's setting the world on fire by what's being said on here.

he hasn't been completely uninvolved if it sounded that way, he's been one of the better players on the pitch in fact it's just that he's constantly having to wait and move for the ball when he's much more suited to picking it up himself and building the play. one instance he dribbled out of a tight spot just outside his own area and drove the team forward 60 yards, i want to see him in those areas more. he did play a part in our first goal too in fairness which was high up the pitch and on the whole he had a positive half but he can do more.

Doesn't seem to have any urgency in his play at all in this game. Got to say I'm a little disappointed. Probably been the player with most quality when he gets the ball though.

Not enough movement from him to make himself available when England have the ball, and not enough movement from him when England don't have the ball.

He hasn't had much chance this half though. England haven't got out their half much.

KWP on.

kyle did well albeit out of position, he did better than the actual left back who i didn't notice until he walked off injured so hopefully he starts the next game.
