Just watching the U19 game v France. 49 minutes in and I'm just trying to work out exactly how England lined up. Was it a 4231 with Onomah as ACM and Brown as ALM ? Or is it a 442 ?

Regarding the England team they are being managed by Aidy Boothroyd. He currently has one of England's most talented age groups and has had them playing terrible football all year, with their talent alone getting them this far. He is the antichrist to this talk of England DNA and I don't know why he has been given charge of this group. It's like taking a footballing dinosaur and putting him in charge of the England national team, and having them looking like they don't know what they'er doing whilst the team is primarily made up of a side that was playing beautiful football in the same season.

If you listen or read any of his interviews this year and approaching the tournament it is quite embarrassing and he is basically admitting not knowing what he is doing and planning on lumping it up there. The layers aren't being utilised correctly and are looking bad. They are better players than this French team and are missing around 6 of their best. Its a shame really, and the worse bit is any casual or occasional watcher of youth football will see them during this tournament and it will just reinforce the general notion that these players aren't good enough for the PL smh. The irony is that Rashford, justifiably wasn't even considered better than them yet is now hailed as the best young players in the world. I've read some people saying they wished they could sign him, and he isn;t even the best striker in his age group, and the better strikers will not be given a chance. It's crazy how football works.

Re: Onomah, I could foresee people saying he looks lazy, it was my biggest worry and something that will still most likely see him as a target for abuse, as he will be given less time to establish himself by the fanbase if it doesn't appear he is trying. I had this debate with BC and beats1.

It is just his running style and as above he will most likely be following instructions. He is actually a very good presser and I think he has shown this under Poch and all through the youth teams. When not pressing on his side of the pitch he tends to amble but that doesn't mean he is lazy or like he isn't working hard. He always looks best and is at his best, when he in the game like as @Blake Griffin when he is picking the ball up from defenders and making things happen rather than waiting for the ball up top. When he is on the ball he is very active and looks to get forward. While he didn't have a great game yesterday as we didn't have much of the ball, he was still one of England's better players and I was happy be cause h started showing some long range passing in his game. He spread the play under pressure twice and also picked Abraham out with an excellent ball over the top whilst running with it, but Abraham was questionably offside. So he has been developing it seems.

My only real criticism of Onomah off the ball, is quite standard and it is that he can tend to lose his runner or lack awareness or urgency around his own box. It can be developed and is down to more inexperience and the fact he isn't really a defensive player.

He is also very quick, especially considering how much he has bulked up. It depends what the instructions are to the player, in the youth teams he will be pressing

I'm sure some have seen this but does he look lazy here, at 17 against Chelesa?

First start against Monaco, getting out quickly to the ball under Poch

and lastly if anyone can be arsed this is when our u17s faced Spartak Moscow and he and the rest of the team were running around and pressing. He was 15 at the time. He has grown up pressing. Without the ball even here he cans sometimes amble when the ball isn't near him but then he jumps into action

I'll admit his barnet is quite shocking atm, gutsy.

Completely agree about Boothroyd. Such a ridiculous appointment to mange such a crucial age group. What's the point of Dan Ashworth talking about a "new" philosophy of playing a more technical passing game, but appointing coaches that can't deliver it. It's almost as bad as when they appointed Pearce as U21 coach.

I think watching Onomah as a kid for the U18's at times it did look as if it was all a bit too easy for him, you could see he oozed quality, but in the conversation you quoted I said:

There's no doubting Onomah has the talent to step up - I've watched many players who clearly don't have his panache - but I've also seen many talented players fail through a lack of application or because of a perception of one. I hope Onomah can find the balance or prove to be good enough not to need to.

I think there was a concerted effort by him, possibly worked on by the coaches at Spurs to improve that, kick him up the arse a bit, and get him to realise that talent alone won't cut it. That Cheslea game you posted was an excellent example of that. His talent was never in doubt, but I have been impressed with his application over the last couple of years. I think when you put him into a Cm3 he you see the best of him. Unfortunately I just don't see him getting played in his best position much this year. Which I think is a travesty.

Kirby moved to chelsea. There goes one of our future.
So those dreaming of our academy being the supply line of our future can wake uo from the dream now. When we have outstanding players in our academy, we are going to lose most of them before they get through to our senior teams.

See: Marcus Edwards this year, Onomah last year who apparently was sought after by Man City.

We will lose some, every club does and will continue to do so, but it's not as if all of our decent youngsters will jump ship at the first opportunity.

Life's too easy for them, the clubs do everything for them so they don't have to take responsibility in life, so they won't on the pitch either. Of course you'll get the odd kid who's just got the natural determination to succeed but I think many will fall by the wayside, made for life.

For England to be successful I think a shake up of the academies is needed. But as the the PL and FA are separate entities looking out for their own interests I don't see what can be done
10 of the 18 players that played for Wales, as they reached a stage in the Euro's that England has never surpassed, came from English academies and I doubt that the 3 academies the other 8 came through (Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham) treat their young players much differently than English academies.

If you look at England record in the World Cup since we first entered in 1990 and our record in Europe since 1964, this is not a new issue that cam be blames on new players. We have failed to qualify more than we have made the quarter finals (in both comps) and this Euro's was our 5th best. Just look at the 70's!

World Cup
Winner (1) - 1966
Semi Final (1) - 1990
Quarter Final (5) - 1954, 1962, 1970, 1986, 2002 & 2006
2nd Round (3) - 1982, 1998 & 2010
Group Stage (3) - 1950, 1958 & 2014
Did not Qualify (3) - 1974, 1978 & 1994

Euro's
Semi Final (2) - 1968 & 1996
Quarter Final (2) - 2004 & 2012
2nd Round (1) - 2016
Group Stage (4) - 1980, 1988, 1992 & 2000
Did not Qualify (5) - 1964, 1972, 1976, 1984 & 2008

Edwards and Kirby. One left and one stayed. So we cannot solely rely on producing our own talents unless we are Barca or in a financially poor league like Ajax.
Onomah may be good but not in the class of the two players above. We werent win CL or league titles with a team of players in Onomah level of ability.
We need to buy all the time to improve.

Im sorry but Onomah has the ability to be one of the best midfielders we have ever produced and yet we are saying already he is a player that can be destined for the top

(y)

He may not become a great player but at the moment he has matched Pogba in terms of overall development

Chill dude, we have lost 1 player that wasn't even the best we had in his age group.

Also Onomah was a better player than Kirby at the same ago IMO.

Im not sure and at times it didnt seem the team knew. At times onomah was up top alone and other times solanke. Then onomah would pop up in centre mid.
I know some thought onomah looked disinterested and lazy. Personally it seemed like he was asked to spearhead the team at times when really his game is coming from deep.
I actually thought he played as well as anyone

Edit: actually the right back was probably englands best

this might sound like sour grapes because he left but of the four spurs lads that played at the nike cup i was least impressed by kirby. tob was the standout whilst skipp and eyoma both looked very good, kirby on the other hand was a little underwhelming, it was only over three games though so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt. either way he doesn't belong in the same conversation as edwards at this point and onomah by the same age was playing u21s and being tipped in the mainstream media to play at the next world cup so to say kirby is a level above him is wrong. all of that said, i'd obviously rather we'd been able to keep him and hope that him leaving proves to be a one off.

2nd behind doors pre-season friendly today v Fulham

I'd guess that many of last week's squad will take part, plus one or two who missed out and of course Janssen, but overall a slightly more senior team so a few of the youngsters who played last week will not play or will have more of a sub role to play rather than 45 mins, as the pre-season training starts to intensify

Vincent Janssen was denied a last-minute equaliser by a fingertip save from Fulham goalkeeper Jesse Joronen as we met the Cottagers in a training ground friendly this afternoon (Saturday, July 16).

Kieran Trippier in action

The striker’s near-post flick from Nacer Chadli’s cut-back was pushed beyond the far upright by Joronen at full-stretch as we tried to recover from conceding to Luca de la Torre moments earlier at Hotspur Way.

Ultimately it stayed 1-0 to the visitors but Mauricio Pochettino was able to run the rule over a number of Development Squad members over the 90 minutes, once again choosing to field a combination of senior and young players in the pre-season exercise.

The first period saw us move the ball around nicely without finding a way to penetrate the Fulham defence. Teenage centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers was strong at the back for us while Nabil Bentaleb exhibited some tidy footwork and clever forward passes in search of Alex Pritchard, but the Cottagers stood firm.

Kieran Trippier almost picked out Heung-Min Son with a cross-field ball from the right, but it ran behind at the far post before the South Korean star could reach it.

Above: Victor Wanyama gets away from ex-Spur Scott Parker.

Cauley Woodrow’s deflected shot just after the half-hour mark had goalkeeper Michel Vorm scrambling low down to his right to tip wide while Floyd Ayité hammered the wrong side of the near post after ex-Spur Ryan Fredericks picked him out four minutes before the interval.

Another of our former players, Scott Parker, came on at the break as both sides made changes and again we played some neat football, Harry Winks shooting over the top before Shayon Harrison forced a fine save from Joronen with a left-footed half-volley out of nothing.

Chadli and Harrison again tried their luck with respective shots from distance before Fulham snatched the lead against the run of play on 88 minutes. Stephen Humphries’ cut-back from the left found de la Torre in space in the box and he drilled past substitute goalkeeper Luke McGee from 10 yards out.

In the 90th minute we almost found a response as new signing Janssen, picking up his first game time since his move from AZ Alkmaar earlier this week, was denied in impressive fashion by Joronen and, from the resulting corner, the goalkeeper pushed Harrison’s close-range effort up and over the bar – the last opportunity of the game
