apparently the main reason is because the games are scheduled during international breaks which means a lot of our(and other big clubs') best players will be missing it. sounds like chelsea, liverpool and utd have declined their invitations too so it's looking like a bit of a farce currently.
@L-man , @raggy

The thinking behind the scheduling - all games in the international breaks, means that many of our best youngsters would not be available as they would be away with international youth teams. So that means only our '2nd rate' youth players would get the experience - which frankly is unhelpful

Additionally there is a requirement (I don't understand the full definition) of half the EFL team being from 'the first team squad.

All in all the player requirements mean that the very players we want to use in the competition (our best youngsters) will not be able to play in it due to its mandatory scheduling, while there may be also a drain by using first team players.

Total farce.

I'd guess that certain of the people drawing up those rules didn't want PL academies involved, hence they've made rules which negate the main purpose of PL academies being involved

I totally agree with you but there is one thing that it could have done which is make getting a loan for the lesser players to get a loan

We could have played this team as these guys wouldn't be on international duty

Harrison
Oduwa ---- Miller ---- Ward
Amos --- Winks
Ogilvie -- Walkes -- Maghoma -- Lesniak
Glover
Though the rules are strange, it states that for the academy 6 of the starting 11 have to be U21's which is suggesting you are allowed to play older players

Whilst the league 1 and league 2 clubs have to have at least 5 "first team" players in the starting 11

I think Man Utd gave the worst reason for not joining imo, they apparently want to focus on the U21 league

Johnsons Paints has not renewed its sponsorship, hence the need to change its title.

I understand that as part of the deal for 16 PL Academies to be allowed to enter the competition, PL is giving £1m as part of the 'sponsorship' of the competition which will make up about 50% of the prize money available.

Agree with your first point.

But several of that side could get international call ups this year - Oduwa for Nigeria u23's (I know he was dropped from that squad, but he could get back in), Amos was a reserve for E u19's so an injury away, if Winks gets game time he may well be called up for E u20's or Eu21's, Glover is regularly picked for Australia and Lesniak for Slovakia u21's and Ogilvie pre-injury was appearing for England youth sides,

which is why I think we might well end up with our 'lesser' players being involved, who are unlikely to make Spurs first team, so Spurs get relatively little benefit.

I haven't read the rules fully but agree it says that 6 of the 11 need to be u21 and it also says that 5 'first team players need to be in the starting 11 - now that may be aimed at the League 1 and League 2 sides but I wonder if it means that we might need to have some of our 'first team' squad involved. Now what constitutes a first team player I haven't seen, we might be able to argue that Winks is as he has played 2 first team games.

But either way it looks as if the Spurs coaches (and Chelsea, Liverpool and ManU) have read the detailed rules and decided its not what they were expecting and its not beneficial to take part

Amos this season would be reserve for the U20's in prep for the world cup but winks wont be part of the U20's nor will Ogilvie as they are both too old for the world cup

I dont think winks will be making the U21's as he has a lot of players in front of him

The U18s & U16s are going to Belgium next week for a training camp, then a friendly vs QPR on July 22nd followed...

by a mini-tournamnet at Liverpool's training centre on the weekend of July 30th.

I would guess the mini tournament is the traditional pre-season one rotating amongst the top PL clubs, so ManU, Chelsea and Arsenal also often involved

First pre-season friendly tomorrow,, Saturday, when we send a Development side against Notts Forest.

Unfortunately its behind closed doors so not sure how much coverage it'll get, be interesting to see if so early in the pre-season its a fitness exercise and the team is a mix of first team and u21's, perhaps each playing 45 mins or what the set up is..

I imagine it will be the same as last season, Poch coached all of these friendlies last season and they were a mix between youth players and first team players, they all took place at Hotspur Way as well.

The Spurs OS uploaded highlights of all the games and wrote reports so hopefully we will get the same this time around.

England under 19s on Eurosport 1 Tuesday at 6.25 UK time. Playing France, shame the elders couldn't do the same.

Guess the good news is we kept Tashan Oakley-Booth who is the bigger talent of the two right now.

I hope we start having a serious look at some of Chelsea's pre-scholarship players now, I bet some of the smarter ones would jump at the chance to come to our academy.
