Great result today but, for me, tinged with sadness.
When I saw the black armbands, I held my breath because I knew so many of the players who are now ageing and when I learned it was Tommy Harmer, it brought back some fond memories.
I didn't know Tommy but I did see him play when I went to matches with my dad in the mid-50s. Tommy was small in stature and slightly built, he was speedy and accurate with his passing from his inside forward position. He was transferred to Watford in 1960, after giving nine years of stalwart service to Spurs, so missed out on being in the Double winning side where Les Allen and John White filled the inside forward places so expertly.
Tommy put in 222 appearances and scored 51 goals while with our team and when he retired, he was still living in N17, his spiritual and footballing home.
I last saw him some years ago at Cliff Jones's 60th birthday bash. As he left the party, we were getting into our car and Tommy tripped on a step. "Didn't see that happen too often in the old days, Tommy!" I remarked and he laughed and said goodnight.
Another Spurs legend gone. He would have loved the result today.
RIP Tommy.
