Did you have the misfortune of sitting in North Stand Upper, because that's where those bastards congregate? I can only wholeheartedly agree with Bankruptspurs:

Boy can i agree with this about fans in north upper - had the misfortune of sitting in front of four of the biggest moaners possible today. Could have hit the woman in group after the first 30 minutes so you can imagine what must have been like after the next 60. Didnt have one good word to say and didnt join in any of the songs - type of people who do not know the meaning of the word supporter.

West lower wasn't great. Lamela seems to get zero appreciation. People stupidly still comparing him to Bale

Good post, although Townsend had a lot of opportunities to prove himself. One thing we could have done, and might still do, is to move Jan into midfield as the holding midfielder and bring Wimmer into central defence. He has played there before, and I had wanted this a few games back when Dembele was unavailable.

Did he though? I think he was very unfortunate with injuries at the wrong times and has been chasing his form and fitness over a couple of seasons. The debacle with the fitness coach clearly didn't help either but would have loved to see him given a final shot. I suspect once we decided to spend money on Son, that pretty much put the nail in his coffin.

I like the direction you are going in regarding centre half and I think we have a big decision to make re: the Toby/Jan partnership. I agree that Wimmer could be an option as he was faultless during the spell he came into the team. Another could be to slot Dier into his natural position alongside Toby. I loved hearing Ledley talking recently about how easy he found playing CH after a spell in CM as he had so much time on the ball and could read the game so much better. He also went on to say he could envision a similar path for Dier which I found quite interesting.

Moving Dier back could then open up a slot in the team at CM which is one of the positions where we desperately need a leader to control the tempo and pattern of games especially in that 60-85 min spell in games where we have struggled with this year.

There are a few ways to look at the end of season results and how things may work out for us.

1) The Business Side - Finishing in the top four was a priority, though less stated this year, but DL must be happy. However, 2nd place and the tag of top London club is a huge incentive and worth millions extra on the commercial side. The club can ask for more from Nike for the shirt deal if we come runners up.

2) The Playing Side - The goal for the staff was to finish in the top four, qualify for Europe, win the Europa Cup, and/or win a trophy. They have done what they set out to do. The human nature side of professional sport means that the let down after the Chelsea result and Leicester winning the league was a tough blow to overcome. It showed today. Players don't think in business terms other than their own contracts and despite what fans want to believe they don't share their feelings either. They could not rise to the occasion one more time and might not next week either. Their job is done.

3) The Support Side - Wanted a top six finish, hoped for a CL spot, hoped for the chance to finish above Arsenal, possible trophy and an extended European run. Most would gladly have settled for third at the start of the season, but if we end up there now it will be a disappointment. The fans have got their main goal of a top four finish, but the ultimate goal for some fans is to finish above Arsenal. The players have not bought into that concept and for them the CL and the title is the greater goal. Finishing above Arsenal is false consolation. Not for the fans.

While the players and the business side will get over finishing third I am not sure how long term fans will deal with coming behind Arsenal yet again. No need to go into the ins and outs of this right now.

I wrote previously of the reaction to players who have been suspended or who lost the plot at Stamford Bridge if we were not to finish second. I hope it does not come to a blame game next weekend.

Lots to be proud of this season, but a lot to provide concern too.

It is not over yet. Hang on as the next week is going to be a bumpy ride.

It really won't. I'll be absolutely gutted and the Arsenal fans will be unbearable for a while, but once the dust has settled we will still be in the CL next season.
i know it's much better for the club etc, but it would piss me off so much given that we should have sown this up. That on top of years and years of taking shit. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Looks like I picked the right game to sack off in order to soak up the sun and have a nice barbecue! Only the second match I haven't watched all season (the other being our home game against Leicester).

It's amazing how we can have such a great season and still find a way of potentially ending it on a massive downer! Today's results mean we've 100% confirmed automatic CL qualification, which everyone would have seen as a huge achievement at the beginning of the season. However, there's no denying that if we end up below Arsenal again this season will end on a very disappointing note.

Still...at least Arsenal didn't win today, and 2nd place is still very much in our own hands. Pretty sure we haven't lost two back-to-back league games all season either, and there's no way Pochettino will let the importance of this match escape the players.

I think it will be very interesting to see what we can do in home games in another stadium. I love the Lane as much as anyone but I still think the small pitch helps team coming to us on the counter.

because we always struggle against them and our form is disaster
Our record away against them is good. We must not underestimate them but should not build them up to be better than they actually are. We should get the point we need if we play ok.

Atmosphere in the South lower was really good until Southampton scored, everything went a bit flat after that, both on and off the pitch. However, looking over at the Paxton/West stand I do honestly wonder why these people bother. The away fans were taking the piss out of those in the W Upper and I don't blame them. If some people don't want to stand up that's up to them but going to a game and not getting involved in making noise/supporting the team is purely counter-productive imo. I hope things change in the new stadium but I fear it'll only get worse.

They're a bunch of turds. You should have shouted at them. I did and they shut up after that.

Because they haven't been "utterly inept" since the waiter went there and their last 3 are better than ours. If they have a chance of survival it will be a difficult game for us, particularly given how we played today. If Sunderland beat Everton it will/should obviously make a difference.

They couldn't score against Aston Villa...

Let that sink in for a second, if that's not utterley inept then I think we have a different understanding if what the word inept means (y)

how can anyone not love Lamela? lost count of the amount of times he drove us forward today

only player I can really say didn't deserve to be on the losing side today
You can always count on Lamela to be trying to do something on the pitch and going forward. Alot of games, it glosses over the general not giving a fuck and playing shitery of the team. However, we always find that out because Poch loved taking him off early and the team proceeded to bottle it and drop points. Happened far too often this season.

I tend to be harsh with the players but I thought we were brilliant in the first half, we just dont kill the games off. We could of been 2 or 3 up after 15 minutes.

Then we get our goal and you think, thats it, sunny day at the Lane, we are going to win this but no, we concede a sloppy goal.

And what about the second goal, as sloppy as it gets. Wasnt even a shot, a pass towards goal that ends in the net...
