Tottenham were caught making illegal payments to players and got away with a piddly fine

Not so.

Tottenham discovered illegal payments made by a previous administration and reported it to the FA. Not caught by anybody else; found it themselves and brought it to the attention of the authorities.

The FA fined Tottenham a massive amount, banned them from the FA Cup and deducted points (15 I think) from the forthcoming season.

On appeal, and with the implicit threat of legal action this was later amended: the points deduction was reversed, we were admitted to the Cup, and the fine was reduced to 1 million quid.

If you're going to make sweeping generalisations, at least have the decency to get the basic facts right.

So West Ham would appeal, say "Look what happened to Spurs!", the Premier League would say "Oh yeah", and the points reduction would be rescinded.

I can't believe I'm going to say this but I agree with the Daily Mail and Dave Whelan. Richard 'David Dein's butt buddy' Scudamore should resign because the guy is a joke. Look at the whole affair with the Spurs-West Ham game 2 seasons ago. The England national team doctor, the top medical expert in English sport said that the ill Spurs players shouldn't play but Scudamore obviously thought he knew better and threaten a fine and possible points deduction of points on Levy.

They agreed that West Ham should have been docked points.

They even concluded that the same third-party agreement that should have been terminated in April, and so allowed Tevez to play in the all-important final three games of the campaign, was probably still in existence.

The Premier League has lost a lot of credibility today. Today has shown that if you have the money you can buy you're way out of trouble for breach of league rules.

At the end of the day, West Ham will play more attractive football and create a higher standard of competition than Sheffield United ever will, and I'd rather see them in the Premiership for it.

At the end of the day, West Ham will play more attractive football and create a higher standard of competition than Sheffield Wednesday ever will, and I'd rather see them in the Premiership for it.

That's because Wednesday are a Championship team and have been for a few seasons now. Sheffield United should be a Premiership team.

Not fussed really, we will get to beat them twice again this season, the truth of all of it is, West Ham aside, Shefield United had to get a point against Wigan, and they failed, the deserve to get relegated end of. It is harsh but thats the reality, trying to get out of it on a technicality is them trying to mask how crap they really were.

Agreed. I just cant see them ever getting tough though. Precedents have been set.

If a club wont get points deducted for making illegal payments to players, or tapping up players, or agreeing to illegal clauses in 3rd party agreements, then what will they get deducted points for?

Probably players taking their shirts off and over celebrating...

Sorry mate, didnt appreciate thats how it happened, thanks.

It actually sounds very similar to the West Ham scenario. It was Magnusson who made the PL aware of the contract which Terry Brown had originally witheld.

Maybe he should have just kept his mouth shut about it.

If we were deducted points im sure he would have simply appealed using the spurs scenario as a precedent.

Wasn't it Liverpool who checked the contract with the PL when they were looking at Mascherano's signing?

While we're on about precedents, weren't Swindon outright relegated a few years ago for something or another?

That's a better precedent. Relegate West Ham and promote West Brom.

No

The PL's original ruling listed 7 reasons why they opted not to deduct points.

Point 7 was:

Seven, it was Mr Igoe, thus the club, then under new ownership, who brought attention to these breaches.

When did they do that? Not as part of due diligence when EM took over the club, but after Liverpool brought it to WH's attention.

It dosnt mention a date in the PL's original verdict, nor does it say who brought it to the attention of EM.

The only FACT we know is that West Ham informed the PL.
