Robinson's problem was that he tended to dither; not only was he unsure of what he was going to do half the time, the rest of the defence seemed to have no idea either. Friedel doesn't have that problem. I've seen Casillas accused of being rooted to his line, anyway.

However, if it's as TSH suggests and Gomes has lost the confidence of the defenders, that's a problem the management can't ignore.

I don't watch much continental football but what I do know is that there isn't the same emphasis on crossing the ball in Spain as there is here. Any keeper plying his trade over here who doesn't like having to deal with crosses ought to find another profession, in my opinion. That includes Cudicini and Friedel.

And even though Gomes drove me up the wall last season, I am open to the idea that there were mitigating factors-our midfield didn't give our defence much protection and we kept chopping and changing our centre backs. I think our lack of marking at corners was disgraceful-it looks to me like our captain and great leader Dawson couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery and as much as I like Gallas, he's not very good in the air. People can say that maybe our defence didn't have any confidence in our keeper, maybe you could also say the reverse-who knows?

Gomes has been with us 3 seasons

the second season when we got 4th he was superb, the other two he has been poor at best and shambolic at worst.

he seems weak mentally and the defence at the back-end of last season had clearly lost confidence with him

friedel is an average keeper who will make mistakes and has many limitations however the fans, management and defence know what they are getting with Brad. This is the key - yes he is average, but at least he is consistently average

Gomes is in the same mould as Barthez and David James - world class one minute, Conference the next

I'd far rather a limited, but solid and dependable keeper than someone who is 'better' but continually erratic like Gomes

If Redknapp had the foresight to bring a sports psychologist then Gomes would easily be no.1 at our club tight now. Instead it looks like he is gonna run down his contract and leave for nothing which is disappointing for a goalkeeper of his ability.

I know alot of Villa season ticket holders and none of them rate Friedel as a keeper especially the fact his communication and lack of him coming of his line has cost them quite a few goals. However for some reason the media like big Brad.

Well he doesn't seem to be injured as Redknapp said 9 players were out injured and didn't name Gomes in that 9. I'm certain he will be in the Europa squad and will compete with Cudiini for a start. I hope for his confidence he starts on Thursday

Gomes is the best keeper I've seen at Spurs by a comfortable distance, and one of the best goalkeepers in the Premiership, unfortunately people don't seem to realise this. Friedel is an exceptionally safe pair of hands, but as well as being at the back end of his career, I don't think he's in the same league as the octopus. Friedel will rarely drop a bollock as big as some of Gomes, but is nowhere near as proactive as him in dealing with crosses into the box, Gomes will come and clear everything in his path before a situation develops, Friedel is less aggressive than this, preferring to stand his ground on his line. This is not a bad thing as such, but when someone plants a header into the top corner no one looks at the keeper, but often Gomes has been out and punched the ball 40 yards up the pitch. It's playing it safe goalkeeping, rather than Gomes' brave and proactive goalkeeping, which is what I think makes a top goalkeeper.

I'm not going to shit myself if Friedel is in goal, but I still would prefer to see Gomes as our No1.

The trouble is too many people will judge Gomes on 3/4 gaffes a season (and boy when he makes one they are special) and not the rest of the time when he is utterly superb. It's the same as those who judged Palacios on a few memorably horrendous passes and concluded he couldn't pass, the same people who judge Huddlestone on a couple of raking 70 yard passes a game and believe him to be Glenn Hoddle the second.

9 outfield players were out, thats why there was no mention of Gomes

The problem with this is is that it isn't a one or two gaffes, that is minimizing the problem. Its not the howlers that affect my confidence in him, its the erratic and impulsive decision making which has led to frantic and chaotic defending at times.

Yes he comes for crosses but what people are failing to point out is the mess it can leave if he doesn't successfully deal with it, and more importantly the indecision it creates amongst the back four second guessing half the time what he's going to do. Time and time again I have seen a messy situation develop when it has been totally avoidable had Gomes communicated better with the four in front of him.

There is no doubt he is a fantastic shot stopper but there are aspects of his game than can compromise our defensive effectiveness as a unit.

I have heard a rumour that whilst dropped he is taking full advantage of our pledge to let him shag our wives whilst we are at the lane on matchdays, hence why he is not there!
