It's got to be option A

For the greater good of this football club, we cannot be seen to be a one season wonder champions league club. We need to establish ourselves in it year after year for top players and other teams to take us seriously.

Of course I want us to win the thing, but for me we have already done ourselves proud this season, and should progress to the last 8. So with option B we stand a chance of winning it, option A gives us the chance again next season.

Second option - Final of the Champions League, against the Gooners, we win by a landslide with slick attacking sexy footy and as a consequence knock Chelase out of fourth place qualification via the League..

This will never happen whilst the FA are still around. If we win the CL and finish 5th with chelsea 4th. We will at most get an option to enter the qualifying round of the UEFA Cup/Intertoto cup, chelsea will play in the CL, Liverpool will be given our 5th Champions league spot. We will also be forced to Sell modric and Bale to Man UTD and our parrot will die.

Okay maybe not a no brainer, but:

You give yourself a 50/50 chance of winning it, and qualifying anyway. Maybe better than 50/50 'against a team of your choice', remember.

But forget qualifying focus on A CHANCE OF WINNING IT. Being the first London club to win the European Cup. In the history books forever.

Or, finish 4th, qualify again. Win it? Probably not. Certainly not as likely as if playing a team of our choice in the final at Wembley.

And next year we have to compete to finish 4th again. And if we pick option A and play in the Champions League, yes, increased revenue, keeping players etc. But do you think Man U, Arsenal, Man City or Chelsea are going away anytime soon? So there's absolutely no guarantee that having a second year gives us a third year, or a fourth or a fifth.

A one-off chance to win the greatest club competition in the world, and do it before Chelsea, before Arsenal? I'll take that.

Long term development of the club, financial implications... it's like a shareholders meeting.

Nah, the game's about glory...

Then again, no one's going to change their mind, people rarely do that in real life let alone on the internet, so yeah, option A for most of you, but that one shot at it for me, every time.

Same here, also don't forget the possibility of taking the 4th placed side's place in the competition next year, imagine City fans thinking they had CL football only for us to take it away from them again

It's a weird one, because whilst finishing in the CL spots gives us a chance of continued and prolonged success, being in the final is 90 minutes away from realising exactly what being in the CL spots could do.

Fortune favours the brave, I'd take Wembley in the Final, it's ultimately what we watch football for and what we want to qualify in the top 4 for.

Anyway, we don't have to make the choice, lets go and do both.

I never meant to imply it was an easy decision.
You and Shelfside, etc. are right - it is what we watch football for.
I have to admit, you have made me think twice - I'm pretty well known for being optimistic (I hope). So the idea of competing in the final and have that one shot of glory is enticing and not without the possibility of winning in the one of, even against the likes of Barca.
On the other hand, I believe the 'Leeds' experience has sobered us up, somewhat. We are not talking about finishing 5th, maybe winning the CL and then having a very good chance of hovering around the 4th/5th spots for the next decade. Many of us are actually worried that failure to qualify this year (whether through the league of winning the competition), failing to attract top players and losing our finest, could actually result in the club going into free-fall.
Like I said, think the implications through, and there really is pause for thought.
I am just glad it is one of those 'stupid' (thanks, Brett:grin:) hypothetical questions that just doesn't occur in the real World. And, even if it did, I am not in any position to effect the outcome and face responsibility.

First option. For the growth of the club, we need to ensure champions league next season. Although the second option is a dream tie, it does not 100% guarantee us Champions league football next year as we would still have to win it.

Going out of the CL at the stage we have got in our first ever year would be respectable, if not a little disappointing. Not qualifying for next year, after tasting it this year would be heartbreaking.

Exactly this...

Option A....the reason being we would go straight to the group stages, thus eliminate either city or chelsea and by finishing 3rd it would mean we would have gone on another good run untill the end of the season....Happy days.

Option B whilst mouthwatering....leaves you open to a major heartbreak in the final and no CL next season.

Option A would allow us to keep Bale, modric etc..

To risk losing , as we may in option B, may mean adios :hello: modric and/or Bale .

Nail head head nail .

The Champions League is fucking weird:

It's more importnat to be in it than win it, seemingly.

To dare is to do an all that but it has to be option A.. even though it might be a bit of a cowardly choice, we've already given a great account of ourselves and if we lose that final (let's face it we'll be up against a really top team) then it's a big step backwards.. all eyes will be on our big stars and the top Euro vultures WILL try and pick them off...

Doing well in a European knockout tournament is one thing (Fulham last year) but being consistently towards the top of your domestic league is what makes a great team.

Option A as it's guaranteed CL football next year.

I'd love option B though!

I totally respect the opinions of all those who are plumping for Option A here, by the way, and what it's taught me is that my instant and instinctive choice of Option B is maybe out of step with the majority's thinking.

Hell, it wouldn't be the first time.

I'm not, strictly speaking, allowed to plug my blog on here, which is fair enough, but I've written about this issue on Such Small Portions today, and hope to get some readers to join in the debate.

I've also linked back to SC, of course - and thanks very much to Brett for posing the question in the first place.

"It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. And we of Spurs have set our sights very high, so high in fact that even failure will have in it an echo of glory."

William Edward Nicholson, MBE

Bill would have gone for Option B I think.
