Son clear MOTM. Good performance from Winks.

Shockers from Rose and Sanchez, amazed they started and staggered they played the entire game.
I’d give Sanchez a pass not a full back. Rose on the other hand was atrocious

It was a tactical fucking horlicks and at no point did we ever seemingly have control over proceedings or a semblance of discipline off the ball in trying to nullify their biggest threat which undoubtedly was the forward trio.

That being said, Arsenal were equally inadequate off the ball and considering the midfield personnel they utilised i'm surprised just how open the middle of the park was.

Ultimately 2 points away at the Etihad and Emirates are serviceable for a good season but it belies the fact that we have so many flaws in our system and this still requires some open heart surgery over the international break if we are to solidify ourselves as third best because we are a million miles away from City and Liverpool.

Lloris 7. Solid. Also seemed to make the decision not to pass short after we fucked it up. Some good saves.

Sanchez 5. Difficult game for him in a position he was clearly not suited to. Got rinsed a few times early on, but to be honest he just about adapted to the position, even if it wasn't pretty. Won't be too harsh on him.

Verts 7. Solid

Toby - 7. Solid

Rose - 4. His performances are all over the place at the moment. His mistakes are costing us at the moment.

Winks 7. Solid. But I don't like the Sissoko Winks paternishp, although we didn't really have much choice today. We have no real control of the game when them too play.

Sissoko 6. Grew into the game, but not really his powerful marudering self of late, though that came through in the last 15 minutes where he won us a couple of important free kicks to ease pressure. But that chance.

Eriksen 6. Goal, got stuck in here and there and showed commitment. Just as ever the game seems to pass him by of late, but that is true of the way we are playing at the moment.

Lamela 8. Really good first half. Some great runs, and passes. A good away day player.

Son 8. Caused them all sorts of problems. Good shift defensively too.

Kane 7 - Showed glimpses of his best, just quite not there yet, but he still managed to make some key passes and hold on to position in tight positions and good dribbling. Should have stood up for the pen late on and I'm sure there was a runner into the six yard box. The way we are set up at the moment we're not getting the best out of him.

Lo Celso 8. Very composed and added a calmness to our headless display. Encouraging.

Alli 6.5 Didn't really do anything wrong, but we missed his runs and the space he creates for other players. It was so fuckign refreshing to see movement from an attacking player.

Team performance: Disjointed with no real control of defensive discipline in terms of shape or composure. Played better than in previous game, and we showed some good attacking quality in the first half. A lot of work to do, but its a start. Left it on the pitch.

Hugo MOTM. Some great saves but his distribution is a big concern against the pressing sides.

Son had a great first half but a largely invisible second, and was correctly subbed. I really like the way Lo Celso, Eriksen and Alli moved around after the latter two came on. Kane also seemed rejuvenated when those three were on the pitch. That at least bodes well for after the international break.

We have serious problems at full back, both sides, and unfortunately I see no workable solution in sight with the personnel we currently have. If Rose hoofs the fucking ball away and we get to regroup we probably go in to half time two up, Arsenal might have flown out of the traps the same way after half time whatever the score, but I felt at the time that that would cost us the win. Another in the ever-increasing list of horrible brain farts on that flank.

Sanchez is starting to worry me a lot, he has had a terrible start to the season and I know RB isn't his position but he was all over the place today and that was the last thing he needed after that shocker against Newcastle.

People jumping on Sanchez again is really unfair. He played out of position for the team not only that he was given some appalling balls to control. Rose is now starting to worry the hell out of me.

Having said all that there are lots of positives to work on and things clearly need be be ironed out

Some of you are being utter ****s about Sanchez. Nowhere near as bad as you’re making out.

Particularly when he is not a RB.... He was asked to play there by Poch... I'm baffled why Poch didn't play Toby at RB considering he's played there for Belgium.

Much much better today, well deserved point and we push on from here now once the window has closed :)Thought Sanchez was excellent out of position.

Son, Lamela and Winks great.

A bit puzzled by Pochs substitutions. He take on Alli and switches up the whole midfield, with Alli central and Sissoko wide right. Alli in usual manner running infront of Kane and Son and within five minutes Poch has to put Alli left, Sissoko back central and Son wide right. Shows really bad planing with the substitution as I see it.

Before the game most onlookers thought this would be an open game. Two teams who look quite vulnerable and have issues in what they're doing without the ball, but with plenty of attacking threat.

That's exactly what we got, and what both teams/managers seemingly intended. We left Kane and Son up top excused of most defensive duties waiting for the ball to be won and sprung forward to them, they left all their front three up for the same reason. However we were less suicidal going about our work, defensive line not so high, soaked up some pressure, and two fullbacks positioned very conservatively, whilst they pushed right forward and had both fullbacks bombing on and leaving huge channels to exploit.

And for the first 40 minutes it did the job, not that convincingly in my opinion but (with some help from the opposition) very effectively. Yes we were soaking up pressure and off the ball we really don't look convincing at the moment, but winning back we sprung several counters. Son the danger man, but Kane was enough of a nuisance, and Lamela and Eriksen were making some really nice surging runs up in support. The first goal, helpful goalkeeping aside, was a good counter break. The second goal was some high press in action - Winks wins the ball as they try to play forward, does some great work to get away down the left flank, cuts it back for Son, penalty. Kane did the rest.

Personally I think we could have easily come out in the second half and looked vulnerable even at 2-0, but conceding just before the break was a big setback. We just couldn't get out for the 5 mins before the break and the pressure eventually told. Sanchez had a chance to clear on one flank, then Rose, neither did and the goal came. It was another example of not managing situations as well as we could do and make smart choices, sometimes we just need to get rid of the ball and regroup from there.

That gave them the encouragement to come out for the second half and have a right go at us. In all truth for the most part of it we got battered. A rare foray forward saw Kane smash a shot against the post, but for a good half hour we were camped in our third trying to hold out, counter threat and any respite gone, and eventually didn't. The equaliser was soft, no pressure on the ball, then Vertonghen just cant allow his man across him like that, it was disappointing. We were on the ropes after that for a spell, and an offside call came to our aid as we tried to hold out.

But the final 5-10 mins the pressure lifted a bit. We were able to get out at long last, won a few freekicks, got down the other end, killed momentum and some of those counter opportunities remerged. However we wasted a couple of decent openings and had to settle for a point.

One of the big concerns is that without the ball we continue to look out of sorts and the opposition are finding it too easy to play against us. How many times did you hear Neville on commentary, saying things like "not enough aggression" or "too passive" etc. and he wasn't incorrect. But I don't think the shape of our team is helping at all, I'm not sure players know what they're supposed to be doing half the time. Especially when we aren't pressing/winning the ball back quickly currently, and so having to fall back into a defensive shape just looks confused.

Take how we set up today - Son is playing in the left channel, Kane is up front with him. The midfield, who knows really. Lamela is all over, Eriksen kind of left but roaming as he does. Sissoko is sometimes on the right but then sometimes central. Winks is sometimes the sole pivot, then in the double pivot with Sissoko, sometimes he's playing towards the left of the midfield. Is this all really by design? Because I'm not convinced. Plus having such a fluid/non-existent right side hardly helps a makeshift fullback, does it.... When we then don't have the ball, I think one of the biggest problems is then players not knowing who's supposed to be doing what, covering the flanks etc. and what shape we should be in. Often players are looking around to check if that's there man and there's total confusion, sometimes no one engages the ball and even worse sometimes two or three belatedly go towards it and then that does open big gaps. It wasn't until second half where we got battered back into a 4-4-2 shape that we got some consistency. But then subs happen and it's all change, and confusion, again.

I think first we need to strive for clarity and a settled defensive shape in what we're trying to do, before focusing on the nuts and bolts of what people are doing and strengths/weaknesses. That would sort a lot of the issues.

Also, not sure I agreed with the Son and Lamela subs to be honest. I thought these two looked our two best counter options throughout and were causing the most problems. I know in the second half we were starved of any ball to use and to break, Son was becoming more and more anonymous and Lamela was on a booking, but taking away our best threats didn't seem to make much sense to me. We did manage to fashion some chances again later on when countering, would they have been a better bet to use them?

Lloris - Made some crucial saves, a couple of heart stoppers with the ball at his feet.

Sanchez - Struggled but was playing there as an emergency measure. Also didn't get much help did he. Was part of the chain of events for the first Arsenal goal though, had a chance to clear and relieve pressure.

Alderweireld - OK.

Vertonghen - OK, but has to do better for the second goal.

Rose - Had a couple of huge brainfarts mucking about in our third, one of which led to the goal before HT. Just fucking clear the ball. Thought he regrouped OK in the second half, and he too, as most weeks for our fullbacks, didn't have a lot of help at times.

Sissoko - Worked hard, as per. Disaster zone with the ball at his feet, as per.

Winks - Thought he was much better today and one of our better performers. Defensively/positionally he isn't perfect (not helped by the system), and he/Eriksen should have closed down better for the second goal, but he was tenacious, energetic, getting a foot in and breaking up play, played some nice passes at times, and some stellar work for the second goal.

Lamela - Really effective in the first half and made some excellent supporting runs and contributions to counters. Obviously this suffered as we were on the back foot in the second.

Eriksen - Thought he put in a really good shift and some good following up for the opening goal.

Kane - Started quite well, the second was a bit more of a mixed bag - had the shot off the post and the counter at the end, but was losing the physical battle more and more when we needed a bit of relief and the ball to stick. Maybe for the second week running he could have had a penalty, but, like the Newcastle one when he could have shot at goal, there was a guy across goal for a tap in if the cross is made but his only instinct is to maximise the scenario to try and win a foul rather than play the ball, which I don't like.... If he puts his foot through the ball I'd like to think we have a goal from one of those two plays.

Son - Had acres of space to counter into as Arsenal seemingly didn't want to defend against it. Didn't always use the opportunities to maximum effect but he was clearly our main threat out there. Second half he went out of it as we got forced back and weathered the storm, I'd have probably kept him on though for any breakaway chances we'd have.

Subs:
Alli - A couple of involvements but struggled to get involved really.

Lo Celso - Shifted the ball well a couple of times, and I thought he mucked in quite well and was tenacious.

Loris for me. Some good performances from few others like Son, Lamela and winks. Today we needed the midfield masterclass of dembele. Most use to moan he is passing sideways e.t.c but with him we always have control in the midfield. Even klopp said it once and twice that our midfield bossed them. I hope we gwt dier to the level of his best and can use him with nodombele in the midfield.

Son clear MOTM. Good performance from Winks.

Shockers from Rose and Sanchez, amazed they started and staggered they played the entire game.

the only reason I can imagine why we never used Aurier from the start is knowing he would of needed replacing at a certain time. perhaps Toby or even Sissoko would of been the better choice if Aurier wasn't fit enough for 90 mins.

I was hoping Poch would bring on Aurier approaching half time, to replace Rose, and put Jan as our LB.

Lloris made some very good saves, but if we are going to play this style, we really need to find someone better.

agree with your earlier post about Dier or Wanyama, and we really need to find a CDM if Dier has a hip problem, and if Wanyama goes tomorrow

City and Arsenal away last season we picked up 0 points. This season we have 2pts from those games.

Yeah we lost to Newcastle but I really saw signs of us coming back to doing what we do well today and, barring a fucking stupid call from Rose in first half injury time we would not have lost that. We certainly should have scored more. Despite Son being the outstanding choice for MOTM on here, I thought his finishing and decision making in the box was rather poor.

Anyway, we have Ndombele, Sessegnon, Jan, Lo Celso and Dier all to come back or fully become integrated after the international break.

I reckon we’re looking ok, as it stands, with plenty of room to improve. The others look pretty weak and it’s easy to overlook that. Chelsea drew with Sheff Utd and Man Utd with Saints.

Just keep the faith.

Winks MOTM for scrapping like a little terrier when it mattered.

Lloris. Some good saves and generally decent. Kicking still a huge weakness.

Sanchez. Possibly one of the worst performances I've seen from a player. Not his fault, never his position. Really struggled to control long balls, and couldn't cope positionally. This is also on poch as he should if hooked him or repositioned him. The fact he didn't concerns me as its something he tends to do.

Toby and jan generally fine, nothing special today nothing awful. So glad to see jan back though and he walked out like it was his debut, full of pride and excitement.

Rose, becoming a serial liability. Probably cost us the game at Newcastle and again today. The new 'blitz' following trippiers departure.

Sissoko.. Was good at points but really needs to work on his offensive play and subtleties. Or simply defer consistently. Covered RB well in first half alo g with lamela.

Winks. Much better in a clearly more adventurous role. Lovely skill in the lead up to the pen. I want to see more of this winks, not the Conservative holding player.

Eriksen, did OK, had some passion which was nice, ran a lot probably our hardest presser beneath lamela.

Lamela my mom. Excellent defensive cover, some lovely dribbles and crucial run for the first goal. Would love to see him rwf in a proper 433.

Son close for mom though thought he was to eager to get off the mark with his first goal. Some nice bits and a couple of gorgeous shots.

Kane. Lovely pen. And the shot from acute angle with the outside of the boot that hit the post was gorgeous. That's a hard skill when the ball is running away from him. Something you don't get much from British players. Still looks slow and ploddy. First touch is still meh. What really is jarring me though is his constant foul seeking. Sometimes it feels like it's all he does. One thing I noticed though which I feel very noteworthy is that as soon as alli came on he started moving more and making runs. So perhaps this is part of the problem. He doesn't believe in his service.

Lovely little cameo from lo celso. Looks a tough little bugger with bite and skills for days. I know I'm gonna love this guy.

Alli was decent and probably should of got a pen for getting pulled about by ceballos.

Think it's worth noting that ceballos changed the game for arsenal. Looked a good player and one maybe that should of been playing for us. Dirty bugger but when he's on your side you don't care. I was impressed with him.
