Well in a business context cash flow is everything so I'd disagree on the not mattering part for Spurs. We, and almost every other club would prefer staggered instalment payments as it allows the books to be balanced more efficiently.

I do agree on the second part though; some of the clauses/add-ons will 100% be implemented as a safe-guard to ensure value is returned on our investment. One I'd fathom would be orientated around goals scored and/or qualification for the CL.

Very good point about allowing the books to be balanced more efficiently, didnt really think of that. But at the end of the day, no matter how much easier an instalment plan makes the deal, Spurs will still spend more overall in the deal than would be the case in a payment package that includes add-ons.

But I take your argument on board too

I honestly cant see other clubs going in for him. Especially for that price.

Liverpool are the only team i can think of but i honestly cant see Suarez leaving, If he does it wont be anytime soon and will be past the deadline valencia wants (3rd august if i can recall)

£15million now. And pay the rest off once Soldado leads us to top 4 and beyond and pay them then.

The notion that he was all for joining us last year is encouraging. This is exactly what I was told by a journo in may. He then said that he expected Spurs to return and return big. I think Villa and Benteke being available for what seemed a better price ultimately took us away from the scent a little but ultimately we knew what we needed to do to get Soldado and more importantly, Soldado wants us to go get him!

I'm probably in the minority here but £25.8m is a outrageous amount of money to pay for him. We are not a financially doped club like CFC or MCFC hence don't have money to burn. We are getting proper shafted here if we pay that fee...

I agree, especially given their rumoured financial difficulties. Wait a week or two, bullshit that we are struggling to raise the funds for £25m etc etc etc, and see if they get desperate for the money.

Can you just explain this to me ... what is the difference? I'm not too finance savvy.

Summary:

Salva is a relatively new president at Valencia and this stance is unusual as the club usual sell when a big offer comes in. He says he's told Spurs that he will not accept a payment structure which is less than the £26m buyout, even if it includes add-ons, but he is willing to negotiate a deal which means Spurs don't pay the full fee now, as long as it IS paid eventually. I didn't quite understand that as surely add-ons ultimately bridge this difference, but then I guess it depends on the add-ons.

So there's certainly scope for more haggling but he's adamant that Valencia receive £26m in full or Soldado will not leave the club this summer.

Hunter said if Spurs think this is the man who can get goals - which he clearly is - and fire them into the Champions League again, then they have to spend big and Soldado is certainly a striker who can offer that. So the ball is in Levy's court.

He also mentioned that Soldado told him last summer he was all set to sign for Spurs having been impressed by the club and our interest but decided to stay at Valencia for another year - so Spurs have that in their favour too.
Hunter this evening has said the following....

@BumperGraham: I must say I admire #Soldado as a person and as a striker but that's a very big price indeed.
Not sure that Valencia are playing this right

I agree with him regarding the price, it's a obscene fee imho....

I thought it was accepted practice that fees were paid in installments?

No doubt the advent of wanky clubs like the chavs, citeh, Monaco etc has seen that trend decrease, especially when dealing with the bigger player transfers. Valencia, of all clubs FFS, must surely realise that most clubs don't have an endless pot of money to just dip into and slap the whole fee down in one go.

Sounds like it may be more of them wanting the future installments guaranteed rather than tied to player performance.

Obscene?! What. He's a world class striker in his prime. I mean that implies he's in the ten million pound bracket or something.

This is all starting to slow down again

Sounds like it will stay like this until we change our offer or the way we are paying it. Guess it will come down to who blinks first or whether they get offers for their other players

I wonder if we could do a deal that is dependent on Champions League qualification, but has the potential to be more lucrative for Valencia? For example, a guaranteed 26 million Euro fee, with an additional 8 million guaranteed Euros if Tottenham qualify for the group stages of the Champions League. That way, they could save face by spinning the fact that they got above their asking price for Soldado, with the very real chance that they'll actually get their money given the quality of our side, and we'll also be protected in the sense that a Champions League qualification would more than cover any future fee owed.

Agree. Cavani was an obscene fee but because it was psg noone seemed to mention it. It's okay to overpay if you are rich you see
