Everyone was doing it.Who wasn't ?

In the first half both Kane and Lamela were noticeable in the extra effort they were putting in to harass, press and then track back again as well.

Those two epitomised the high energy work rate off the ball that we need for Pochs system to even have a chance of working properly. It's for that reason I think Lamela is still being played despite the last 3 performances being below par; he is trying to implement what is asked of the team and is working really hard for the team.

I totally agree and said so to my sons today in the pub. Lamela is beginning to track back and defend as well as press, fair play to him. I wouldn't pick him as first choice, but if he can match Lennon's work rate defensively he may be getting the nod because of the potential he carries to create a goal or even score at some point... God willing... another rabona in the league would be fine by me.

I think we are finally have a settled back 4 in Walker, Faz, Verts and Davies... As they play together more often this will help us no end, and to me is extremely important going into the back half of the season. Still not sure exactly the best formation to sit in front, and neither is Poch - But I still think we looked a lot more balanced when Lennon played on the right. Although Lamela is not as bad as everyone says, although his first touch can be horrendous like Ade's - I would start Lennon over him at the moment, but I still think he will come good (I hope).
I thought we defended well from the front today for the most part.. but sometimes it seems we are getting in their faces up front (Kane, Soldao and Lemela in particular did well), but the same intensity wasn't there when they got the ball to there midfield and they were able to get way too may through balls for my liking - although our back 4 covered extremely well.
Anyway - I am one that is still happy with the slow progress, and don't expect too much too quick.

Shouldn't our most expensive midfielder get a game then?
I don't rate him. But luckily for you and as tiger666 says the selections are not down to me. I pass my opinion like I pass urine after a very agreeable day today down the boozer and a delicious dinner with champagne and wine-freely.

There's not really a great deal of point in having 8+ posts that announce that Lamela is shit and then ... don't say why. Indeed, they don't say anything else at all, just 8+ ways of wording a sentence that Lamela is crap and loses the ball too much. Seriously, guys, we don't give a shit what you think unless you tell us why you think it. It's just spam. Or perhaps the modern word for spam is 'opinion'.

Lamela is gradually working through his shortcomings as a player in English fooball, but two of them seem to be intransigent, resistant to improvement. He's addressed the body-strength issue and improved his closing-down enormously.

Unfortunately, the first hasn't been effective because he still lacks the judgment to know when to pass - he will reliably try to beat one too many opponents - often trying to dribble through a crowd of three opponents - and that is why he loses possession so often and thus ruins so many promising attacking moves.

And the second isn't effective because his tackling, while enthusiastic, is too often wild and reckless. He was fortunate to avoid a couple of yellow cards today.

The result is that he remains a net liability in our squad. We usually play better when he leaves the pitch. He is being played regularly despite this and the reason is unlikely to be because he was expensive, it's because he is talented and young. There's a post some pages back on this thread that recommends giving up on Soldado and Lamela as a pair of expensive mistakes, as if they were comparable. They aren't: Soldado is nearly 30 and Lamela is only 22. Even if Soldado does overcome his brain-block and recover his finishing ability, he's still never going to be a long-term success in England, because he hasn't got enough upside, enough future. I wouldn't be upset if we cut our losses on Soldado, but we have to persevere with Lamela because of his age and visible talent. Most of what's wrong with his game is in his head: bad decisions.

I agree that Lamela dribbles into people but this is because Poch seems to insist on playing 'inverted wingers'. Playing on the 'wrong' side means he always has to come in field where he has to beat 3-4 players before being able to get a shot away (or play a through ball).

I have no idea why Poch doesn't just play Lamela on the left, tell him to get chalk on his boots and try and beat the full back and get a cross in. We all know Lamela has skill; he can beat one player consistently - he just can't beat three. He can also deliver a decent cross (as we have seen from some of his dead ball striking).

He may become good enough to be able to come inside and score a load of goals on his own ala Bale. But, until he gets to that point, he would be much better off just having the responsibility of beating a full back and putting a cross in - it's where Bale got his confidence from until he grew into a more complete player.

I'm sure Soldado would appreciate the crosses and I think the supporters would love having at least one player playing as a genuine winger.

Has he ever played as a natural lefty?

Someone should have thought of supplying Soldado with crosses and cut-backs from natural wingers in August 2013. I suspect it's a wee bit late now,
