Let me just say I'm not against selling Clint. He's older and I'd like to see him go to Everton if he did move on just because I don't hate Everton and could enjoy it if he/they had some success. As one of several American Spurs fans here our club has absolutely benefited off the field from Clint playing at Spurs. How much? I'm not certain in the overall scheme of things. Most Americans know they are not a top footballing nation and don't have any "World Class" players. Clint is the biggest (non-keeper) European success that America has produced in football.(not a glowing endorsement of American soccer) Every time he plays for the national team they mention Spurs right along with him. In the states we don't always share the "hate" that Spurs/Arsenal fans in the U.K. do because we're usually just happy to find someone to talk "soccer" with. I know plenty of Americans (some who support Arsenal) who pull for Spurs because Clint is with them. If Spurs win and Clint is a part of it then they take a certain amount of satisfaction(pride?) in that. This past season I never saw so many Spurs games selected for broadcast here. Having Bale and being in the top 5 teams in the EPL is another big part of that as well. Next year with NBC broadcasting every single game of the EPL here there is a real chance to grow the audience (and in turn the Spurs brand) in the U.S.A.. While I agree that Clint is a pretty average player by EPL standards he does seem to find a way to produce for his team and we'd probably be well served to keep him for the (bench/squad) both for his ability to show up late with the odd goal as well as keep the slow but ever growing spotlight of American eyes on Tottenham for at least one more year. One where (American) fans can see "every" Spurs game live.. I know most Spurs fans in England and throughout the world could prob give a rats arse about Americans supporting our club but I'm sure Mr. Levy wouldn't mind a few more Yanks spending their cash at the Spurs online shop....

Considering we went from like 5? official supporters clubs here in the states to 20 I'd say he's had an impact in our growing fan base here!

nah mate, rating is different from slandering him every single match on message boards and whatnot. it's just turned most people who've done a little digging completely off.

don't like it myself but its your right to speak however you want, no complaints here, will point things out sometimes however.

not our fault english fans are into self-loathing like that :D

Not that I usually get involved in these exchanges, but what's said here is exactly, no, make that fucking exactly how it is. Dempsey might not be the greatest footballer in the world (no shit sherlock) but he's a far better footballer than most give him credit for. Some (or maybe most) of the stick he often gets on here is both laughable and pathetic. And what's worse is that it's often trumpeted by people who really rate their own onions on here. And the reality of that is just as laughable too.

It's just one constant cheap jibe after another, it's not constructive criticism, it's not criticism where it's due, it's a constant diet of unfair and unbalanced bile. So what you get isn't a fair reflection on Dempsey's abilities or whatnot as a player more a reflection on the perps who constantly churn out this unfair drivel on the latest figure of hate to wear a Spurs shirt.

Dempsey, Jenas, Huddlestone, Walker gets it too, Naughton less so but it's starting, Adebayor to varying degrees and if I could be bothered to think about it longer, the list would grow.

In very, very slight mitigation, it didn't help the Clintosaurus when we had one bloke on here who must have been either very closely related or in love with him come on here and do the exact opposite. And i'd add not everyone is like that, there are a few who are pretty balanced with things. Thank god.

“I have been in constant contact with Tottenham and they are happy with Clint and he’s happy with the club,” Lyle Yorks, Dempsey’s agent, told SBI. “He’s reporting back shortly. He’ll be back there and will be in Hong Kong (for pre-sesaon) and everything’s good.
“Things could change obviously if a team came in with a big offer, but they are not actively trying to move Dempsey.”

A report in the Times of London last week identified Dempsey as one of the several players Tottenham is actively trying to unload, but according to Yorks, there is no truth to that report.
“There have been no meetings and no discussions. Not with Tottenham or with any other teams about Clint,” said Yorks, who recently completed Jozy Altidore’s transfer to Sunderland. “His focus right now is returning to the team and helping them qualify for Champions League.”

well, that's that folks.

I don't think Clint will be sold - he's a useful experienced head to have around

He puts in a lot of effort and chips in with his fair share of goals while also being versatile enough to cover several areas of the park

I am sure he was never meant to be a star player for us, in fact I am sure he pretty much done his expected job last year it was just that Ade and Defoe failed to do their respective jobs making the need for Dempsey to perform above and beyond his station greater and as a result look bad when in fact he did what he was supposed to do

He's limited and pretty average but he serves a purpose - I am sure if someone like WBA or Everton offered us big enough money we'd bite their hands off and hope that the likes of SIg and Holtby can fill his role in the squad but failing that i'd be surprised if we were actively looking to shift him because I am sure our squad has room for someone who works as hard as he does and is capable of being a goalscoring threat from the bench and can cover a number of positions should we get injuries

When would you expect us to hear something more concrete? I really don't follow the MLS at all.

To clarify, I'm not ITK. Gleaned this piece of info from locating an article via google. The article references an ex-MLS player as the source.

Apparently it's Seattle who want him, but the MLS has a draft system similar to other US sports and they're the second team to pick.

MLS will let Dempsey go to whatever team he wants if that's what it takes to get him into the league, just as they did with Landon Donovan. There really are no rules in MLS when it's inconvenient.

Full disclosure: I'm a Yank so I'll miss him of he goes. I feel like he never really got a proper run with us in his favored position playing off a striker but he still scored big goals for us. Scoring big goals is what Dempsey has done his entire career so I don't think it's a fluke. He has a fearless quality I think we'll miss and no one draws more fouls in danger areas than he does. All that said, I was a Spurs obsessive before Dempsey came and I will be if he leaves. I don't need any Americans on the squad to love this club. I'm glad he was on our side, if only briefly.

Don't think the draft pick really matters... they can be traded for one, plus Dempsey contract gonna be massive that only the likes of Galaxy and Red Bull that have chairmen willing to pay this salary, i am sure he will be level with Keano, Cahill and Henry.

just in:

21.20 BST: Rumours just starting to hit Twitter that Clint Dempsey could be heading back to the MLS after Spurs agreed a fee with an unnamed club. Guess he should never have left Fulham.

I don't like that little dig in bold.

He wasn't awesome for us, but he proved that he can be a valuable member of a Top 4 challenging side. He scored a few crucial goals for us so despite not being his biggest fan, I think it's a bit classless to claim he was utter shit for us.

Dempsey's problem was he followed Van Der Vaart in terms of transfer timing. In moneyball terms, the drop isn't all that great, though it was there, but in terms of charisma and technical ability?

yeah he was a useful squad player, i quite like him and will be disappointed if he leaves. i always like players with a eye for goal, but his build up play isn't that fantastic.

btw... it was a direct quote. ESPN writers never like us.

Sigi Schmid to KJR-AM on Dempsey rumors: ‘Right now, there’s really nothing to it.’
Posted by Joshua Mayers

...Coach Sigi Schmid addressed the rumor and more with Dave “Softy” Mahler on 950 KJR-AM on Thursday afternoon, saying: “We’re always interested in good players, first off and foremost. That’s the No. 1 thing our fans need to know: We’re always interested in good players. But right now there’s really nothing to it. There’s nothing to say.”

Schmid said that, as far as he knows, no contact has been made with Dempsey or his representation and later added: “You can never close the door on anything, but right now there’s nothing that’s nailed down and concrete.”

The coach did confirm that the team is looking to “add something significant” before the transfer window closes on Aug. 8. He noted that could be a midfielder or a withdrawn forward, but be “definitely somebody in the middle of the field.'"

And this is him in SFO apparently:

The guy who appears to be with him doesn't look like his agent (Lyle Yorks). Yorks was quoted as saying Dempsey wasn't for sale.

But, why is he in America when the team is training and getting ready to leave for Monaco? Obviously things can change and ITK has stated recently we are looking to sell him. Also, those quotes from Yorks are at least a couple weeks old now.

Losing dempsey will be a mistake. With Ade and Defoe not firing on any cylinders last season it was easy to man mark Clint out of a game. With solado coming in and ( hopefully ) playing to his value , defenses will focus on him more and allow Clint to wander and play more link up, his strengths.

Btw I'm not American, but live in ny and you have no idea how much the yanks love him. He is the face of the premiership here ( with Bale ) and will definitely add to our bottom line big time...
