I think Delph has been one of the best CMs in the Prem over the past season and a half.

Personally wouldn't be opposed to it, but would need a midfielder on our books to be shipped out first.

Any central midfielders we buy from now on need to be top class players. We can't keep stockpiling decent players.

I'll be in a very small minority on here but I think Delph is a vastly underrated player, not average at all and would be an excellent signing. He's been winning me money regularly for years betting on his player performance on the spread markets. People underestimate him because he isn't spectacularly good at any one thing but he doesn't really have any weaknesses and is hugely consistent. He always put a shift in, passes well, tackles well, dribbles well, reads the play well, is agile and surprisingly quick.

I'm not surprised Poch is interested; he'd be great in his preferred system alongside someone like Mason. I'd be hard pressed to choose between Delph and Schneiderlin but considering their transfer cost Levy won't be. If he didn't play for such a crap team he'd be on a lot more radars. It's time we actually signed a few players who would fit the way the manager wants to play instead of trying to force square pegs into round holes.

Agree with the sentiment that while he's a decent player, he really doesn't offer enough more to warrant bringing him on to an already crowded midfield.

I think the idea would be that we'd be replacing, not adding.

Even if we sold off 2 of our midfielders and brought Delph on, I'd still classify it as a crowded midfield.

Fair enough.

IMO though, it'd be perfect. I think five, including a youngster such as Bentaleb, is absolutely essential in the modern squad game. That count would also likely still include at least one player out of favor with Poch (one of Dembele, Paulinho, and Capoue), and Stambouli who Poch clearly is yet to trust in the Prem. So frankly, assuming two out and Delph in that'd be more accurately three in favorable frame to play, one needing more time, and another on the far periphery.

This would be a true "Much of muchness"-signing. He doesn't add anything we don't already have and he isn't better than what we already have. He's a fighter, yes but what we need is a true DM in midfield. Not a speedy, english Paulinho.

I think Delph and Mason could actually provide a decent double pivot. Mason is supposedly playing the more advanced role, but I don't think he's quick enough to really fulfill that forward drive we need. He's also very skinny and has a long track record of long term injuries, so I don't blame him if he's reluctant to expose himself to the more dangerous injuries to ligaments that are more likely with more dynamic play (vs getting stuck in being more predisposed to bone injuries/contusions - thereby much easier to heal from).

But nonetheless, despite the immensely appreciated improvement in forward, transitional passing, we still need more dynamic movement from our midfielders IMO if we're to do a better job of integrating the attackers, as well as pushing back the opposition. I think a midfield of Mason and Delph would actually provide this, while also being very mentally strong. I think this would genuinely improve us while also saving considerable funds to improve other positions.

He'd basically be Dembele 2.0

Not saying they're identical players just what they would provide this team with would be the same.

I'd sooner see youth promoted or save the money from wages for a truly class signing.

Bentelab and Mason are they way forward. Delph is good by why spend so much on him when we have just as good home bred ?

I think part of the argument for Delph is he'll be a free transfer in the summer or at a reduced price in January.

He is playing well in the Prem while Capoue and Paulinho are not performing. Sell either of those 2 and bring in Delph and we arguably have a player who will perform better for us and we'll make money from it.

I still live in hope that Capoue will become a good player for us, maybe even Paulinho, but I can see the logic of buying Delph.

When he was 19 or so at Leeds he had everything. It took him a long time to settle into and influence in the PL, but last year I thought he was outstanding.

I don't think he's what we need here though and would prefer to either go for an out and out upgrade in midfield (Schneiderlin) or continue bedding in out home grown crop.

He has impressed me this season, but I don't think we should go for him. Plus he is a dirty cad.

Not a great improvement in what we already have imo , would much rather ship a couple out dembele & paulinho & go all out for schederlin if he is the player the manager really wants?

I don't think anyone would prefer Delph to Schneiderlin, but we could likely get Delph for more than 20 million pounds less given their respective situations, and this is even assuming a) Schneiderlin would be willing to come and b) Saints would even sell to us after Poch and now taking Mitchell. I believe we've burned that bridge, and also salted the nearby field while we were at it.

I think with Rodriguez we'd only have a chance considering their attack setup has moved on and survived without him. But as for Schneiderlin, he is still essential to their system. As he has continued to perform and catch attention, his price will only have increased.

Then we don't do it at all, IMO. There is no sense in buying another midfielder who can sort of do a different job because he's cheaper. We've got too many midfielders that can only do half a job at the moment as it is.

Also, I don't think there has been any chance of us signing Schneiderlin since Stambouli was bought as thew cheaper, Schneiderlin-light, McSchneiderlin, Fisher Price Schneiderlin, Findus Crispy Schneiderlin.

Mason stamboli benteleb and delph would be a much more suited midfield to pressing the ball than one one we currently have

Because it's a squad game. What happens if one or both get injured, we need more than 2 cm who can play the way MP is trying to get us to play
