Well first of all, I believe that first refusal option has lapsed.

Secondly, I think Levy just likes to cover all angles and make things as difficult for other chairman/clubs as he can. Leave himself holding some cards etc.

I think regarding your previous post you have it the wrong way round. If, in some hypothetical parallel universe we we were willing and able to do a deal for Bale I think we could convince him no problem. We are in the CL and have been title challengers for the last 2 seasons.

Problem is we were are most likely not able ( and absolutely nailed on certainly not willing) to do what is necessary to make it happen.

We do not shop at Harrods or Selfridges. We don't even shop at John Lewis or M & S.

Rightly or wrongly we are more at home rooting through the bargain basement bin.

I respect your opinion but I have to disagree.

I also believe that it's the sell-on clause that has lapsed but equally I'm not clear on whether the first refusal option has or hasn't so I can't say for sure either way.

From what I've seen over the years Levy is deliberately tight on the deals he does because it makes business sense to do so. We are rarely in for elite players but we have still tried to do it at times. We've all heard the stories about us trying to sign Rivaldo and other players of his caliber. They didn't come off but we certainly tried. That tells me that we have the means to get these deals done because even if the wages are super high, we know that bonus structures can be included to bridge the gap from the lower basic wage.

I think for the right player, one that we know would want to play for us, one that would bring in his own revenue stream simply by being him, we could make a deal work.

The trick with Bale is that he apparently doesn't want to leave Madrid. He loves it there, loves his home and the lifestyle and is settled. He also loves being at the club and has won a lot of trophies. The question would be, if he's forced to leave because Madrid sign M'bappe, would he still be ambitious and want to try being the next Ryan Giggs for United or would he be happy to come back to Spurs. I don't know.

Why is there even a transfer rumour thread about Bale? Our chairman can't buy a replacement for walker so if your expecting Gareth Bale to rock up for 100m your totally fucking stupid. Imo.

I'm surprised that this thread is still open as there is nothing to suggest that we have any chance of signing him.

It hasn't. It lapses in June 2019, according to the article in this thread.

Agreed. And that's where the details of the clause are so delicious. With the Mbappe situation fluid, there's every chance that any deal to sell Bale will go down to the wire, but the clause states that Levy has 72 hours to decide whether to match an agreed offer for Bale or not. Just imagine if Real suddenly decided to sell Bale late on and Manchester United had a bid accepted on 29 August. The scenes as Daniel tells Real and Manchester United that he'll let them know his answer on 1 September...

This thread has somehow got to 15 pages. Quite a lot of delusional people around clearly.

What's the need for this?

The funny thing is, this isn't really even about Bale for me. I'm not a fool and I'm certainly not delusional. I know that it's highly unlikely that we could sign Bale back, however, I take issue with the fact that one minute our fanbase are bitching and moaning like little children that we haven't signed anyone and that we can't compete in the market and then the next minute, when faced with the prospect of trying to sign a top player, we dismiss it as fantasy and almost play ourselves down as this tin pot club that the top players would never sign for. Little old Tottenham, bless em, aren't they cute.

We're fucking Spurs. ANY player in world football should be grateful to play for us, especially now! Fantastic new stadium on the horizon, brilliant young team that is in the champions league for the 2nd season in a row, challenged for the title 2 seasons in a row and more importantly we have one of the top young managers in world football. What's not to like? Why do our fans still look at us like we're the same mid-table team that should be grateful to be in the same stadium as the Man Utd's and Liverpool's of this world. Fuck them. We've finished above them countless times and we BELONG at the top table. Where's the ambition? Where's the belief?

I know the response to this, you're not being realistic. We can't afford his wages etc etc. I'm as realistic as they come and as I say, I know it's unlikely but what I won't do is sit here and say that Bale is too good or too big to play for us. Fuck that shit. He should be so lucky.

I'm not sure anybody has said this. What people are saying is there is zero previous evidence to suggest there is any likelihood that the people in charge of our club would do what's necessary to make this happen if there was a hint of a possibility it could be done.

But I admire your optimism.

Imagine him signing next season, though. Would be commercially massive with the new stadium opening. Obviously it'll never happen, but I do believe he truly loves Spurs and wouldn't reject us out of hand. Just Levy would never pay the money for him and other clubs would gazump us.

Him, Kane, Dele and Eriksen would win us the facking lot.

Miss you, Gareth. Why did you have to break my heart you prick?

Next season could be a different situation - new stadium and the slight possibility we might splash the cash about. Then we can possibly talk about a (very slim) chance of us getting Bale back. Right now it is not even worth talking about, it is pure fantasy.

And I doubt United would want to sell him after just 1 season. :troll:

Ok cool, if you wanna be like that about it then that's fine. I'm merely trying to make a point but do you know what's really funny about all of this......

Ian Wright. Arsenal legend Ian Wright, gets it even more than our own fans. Now THAT is funny..........

Hey I like to dream as well, I would love us to sign Bale. Why put myself through the hope though when I know for certain it is not going to happen at this moment. Why would I do that to myself?

I believe that the fans that are delusional in this discussion are those who out of hand dismisses other fans as stupid if they believe there is a slight possibility for a Bale return.

To argue that we would never sign Bale because we can't even sign Joshua King (or insert any plan C player), they don't really fully understand what a completely different ball game it would be to resign Bale. Levy and the club directors should not be judged in the context of Bale based on how they go about mundane comings and goings of merely squad fillers.

It's not really about hope, it's just about believing that we are capable of doing it and not dismissing it out of hand like it's some fantasy. I just want our fans to have some confidence in us.

Like I've said, it's unlikely it would happen, there are lots of factors at play and lots of reasons why it would be hard to do but there's absolutely no reason why we couldn't try and I feel like a lot of our fans wouldn't even try if given the opportunity to go for it.

Wouldn't it be great if Real knew they weren't getting Mbappe but lead MU on as retribution for the DeGea fax machine incident? And getting Mourinho back for being a ****.

But other clubs can't gazump us. We have first refusal which means, to my understanding, that we'd have a free run at trying to do the deal without any other club being able to compete. If he turned us down or we couldn't get to the fee that RM wanted then we step back and allow the other clubs to bid but we'd have done our bit by then and would know that we tried.

Show me any evidence whatsoever that we currently would be able to pay Bale the wages he would demand. Show me anything at all. I honestly feel kinda crappy now saying this as I feel like I'm hurting your feelings or something and believe me I don't want to do that but mate we simply cannot afford to pay him what he would want and even if we could can you imagine the impact it would have on our other players re: wage expectations. We have to be realistic here.

I'm not saying we will never resign Bale - that could be possible. I'm saying that from all the information we know about the club - the wage structure, the need to be careful financially because of the stadium build, etc. in my honest opinion there is 0 chance of us being able to sign Bale this window. Feel free to debate it if you want but give me some evidence that I am wrong. I also would like to point out that I did not call anybody stupid.
