Bale isn't going to leave Madrid any time soon.

This has only become a story now because Mourinho is doing some shit stirring. I bet he's still there for a few seasons yet.

and I hope Bale rubs it in scoring a hattrick this afternoon.

shirt sales etc would pay his wages.

I never understood where people got this line of thinking - the distributing store (JD, etc.) and the manufacturing company (Nike, adidas, UA, etc.) all cut into that profit to make the margins quite thin. It might be a bit of a different story if most people bought from the club shop (which they do not), but even then not massively. Distributing stores and manufacturing companies come out better than the club do on shirt sales thanks to distribution arrangements. The club has to lean on them for that.

Anyway, I don't think it's likely that Bale returns but if he does I think it's next summer. Would make sense. My question would be if Poch would want him here or not, or if Daniel would be somewhat forcing the homecoming on him.

Agree. The manufacturer pays the club for the opportunity to sell shirts. There will likely be a % of sales included, but only a minute percentage. Spurs have their money from Nike already. Everything else's is Nike recouping their investment.

We'd be fools to not match every bid from a PL club even if we have no intent of actually paying his wages.

Well, he did sanction £30m for Sissoko. I guess it depends which narcotic is the choice for our shiney headed one this summer silly season.
As I've been saying, I can't think of any past signing that could act as a good predictor for future Levy behaviour should Bale actually want to return to Spurs.

Naive one here and I really should know this after years of following transfers in and out.

He has a current contract with Real, but if we make the transfer happen, doesn't his Real contract become null and void since he broke it and then we get to renegotiate a contract (e.g. the wage he is on)?

I could be totally off, but if that is the case maybe (most likely not when he knows there is more money out there) he would take a pay cut to become a legend of sorts.

If I understand you correctly, and without giving in to a desire to crack jokes, yes, when a player changes clubs, a whole new contract is drawn up and there is nothing practical in the way of agreeing a lower salary. When posters say "player A is on XXX a week at Club Shite, we can't afford it", they are assuming that the player would never move and be fine with a lower salary. It's not about his salary automatically carrying over.

Well yes obviously, but bloody hell this thread is reaching new levels of delusion.

What next? Gareth Bale sends desperate letter to Daniel Levy, offering to play for free and begging him to end his nightmare at Real with only 2 CL trophies to show for it?

Thanks everlasting for the clarification. I should have known that, but with every transfer it is made to sound like their salary number carries over, which like you say is just not true.

Dagraham...meant in no way to make it sound like we are in for him or that I think he will come. I just wanted clarification on the renegotiation of salaries once one contract become null and void. :)

Can't anybody see the coincidence that the stories are ramping up about Utd the same week they play each other? He's clearly not going anywhere this year

I always thought threads in the "Transfer Rumours" forum were meant to represent players actually linked to our club by some sort of transfer publication, be it digital or print.

Surely, given the lack of any credible sources, shouldn't this thread be
(a) destroyed;
(b) moved to the "Gareth Bale Memoreez" forum or;
(c) locked so it stops appearing on the new posts list?

I know I've added to it, but I shall stop now.

I think that this thread has been granted immunity.
