But we have to imagine, and hope that this is on a case by case basis. Are Forlan and Fabiano already on 80k like joe cole was? They're also players we need more than Cole right now, so hopefully that comes into the board's thinking.

You would hope that should we find the right player who is young and therefore potentially profitable, i.e. a Dzeko, that we would pay him big as its not money down the drain in Levy's eyes.

It might be that we can only countenance having one really big "marquee" waged player as Harry was talking about before, and at 90k/week, Joe Cole was marquee money but not the player to justify that on?

The only thing that bothers me about this is that Liverpool, despite being out of the CL and not likely to make it back, are still a bigger draw than us. Making 4th really doesn't mean that much for us.

Doesn't say much for Arsenal does it?

TBH im surprised hes gone Liverpool, ourselves Arsenal and United I could understand but not Liverpool, a real backwards step if you ask me. I really don't see 'Pool having better season next year than they had this year gone.

This is spot on. I made this point yesterday and its the reason that I don't think that Cole's decision is just about money. Fact is that Liverpool have a greater chance of getting back into the Top Four than we have of staying in it, at least at the moment, so its not cut and dried that Spurs are the better option in footballing terms.

As for the wage structure, my view is that the wage structure is a good thing because it prevents (most of the time) rash quite fit buys like those teams who go out and get themselves in debt by dumping a whole load of cash on a player who ultimately flops. That said, I think the wage cap should be reflective of one's league position at the end of a season and the more attractive we are as a potential club the more we should be willing to pay....as long as we don't pay silly money.

I totally 100% disagree with you here. Liverpool are actually a decidedly average squad of players. I watched a lot of their games last year and it was no fluke that they finished where they did.

I really rate Roy, but the are a squad with a few exceptional players, and they will struggle to keep hold of them. Most importatnly, what they need is to strengthen their defence and fially replace Alonso. Joe Cole does neither.

We have a young and improving squad, and I think you are being way to quick to write them off inreagrd to how much they will improve over the summer.

I will be puttingmoney on us finishing in the top 4 again for the forthcoming season (already put a bit on).

Master Redknapp's comments.

Jamie Redknapp: Joe Cole was right to choose Liverpool over Tottenham and Arsenal

Joe Cole has made the right decision. Going to Anfield to play for Liverpool is the right move.
I know my dad, Harry, tried to take him to Tottenham and I can see why. He's a clever footballer, who unlocks defences and who still has so much to offer, an old fashioned dribbler.
article-0-0A7F358B000005DC-427_306x423.jpg
Red-letter day: Cole will be revitalised by his move to Anfield, where he will link up with Gerrard (below) instead of battling with him

Tottenham have those players. Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar ... would Joe have got into the team? I doubt it.
Of course, in what they hope will be a Champions League season, they need strength in depth but he needs to be playing first team football now.
At 28, Joe cannot continue to be an impact substitute. He's better than that. He needs a manager to love him. He didn't have it with Chelsea, he hasn't had it with England.
When he played for my dad at West Ham, he performed better with an arm around the shoulder. He will get that from Roy Hodgson.
Signing Cole is a coup for the new Liverpool manager. With there being doubts cast about the future of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard and questions about their lack of spending power, this is a message of intent.
For the club, it's a no brainer. They have signed a £15million player for free. I know Joe's wages have caused much debate, but he wasn't asking for astronomical amounts, he wasn't being greedy.
Players hold so much power and sway now and he had found himself in an enviable position. His club, Chelsea, didn't want him, that was clear. They didn't go out of their way to keep him - can you see them letting a player like Michael Essien get into the same position?

So he has just been looking for the right deal. Remember, Joe scored that brilliant goal for Chelsea at Old Trafford last season which effectively won them the title. Even then, they still didn't love him enough.
THE BEST OF BOSMANS

SOL CAMPBELL
(Tottenham to Arsenal, 2001)
Despite insisting he would never move across north London, Spurs skipper Campbell went to Arsenal, where he won the Premiership twice and the FA Cup twice.
STEVE McMANAMAN
(Liverpool to Real Madrid, 1999)
McManaman was a hit with the Bernabeu crowd, who adored him for his work-rate. He scored in Real's 3-0 Champions League final win over Valencia in 2000.
HENRIK LARSSON
(Liverpool to Real Madrid, 1999)
The Sweden striker easily made the transition from the SPL, winning La Liga twice and the Champions League. Made a vital contribution in the 2006 final win over Arsenal.
BRAD FRIEDEL
(Blackburn to Aston Villa, 2008)
The American is one of the Premier League's most consistent performers. As of the end of last season, he had made 228 consecutive league appearances for Villa.

So Joe knew he wasn't wanted and has spent the time since the World Cup considering his options.
Arsenal were also interested and you can see that he is Arsene Wenger's kind of player; very comfortable with the ball.
Where will he play for Liverpool? He can play off the front, behind a striker, or he can play left or right. I don't suppose you will see him in a central midfield position in a 4-4-2, but he is no luxury player.
I've played against Joe and he will get about the pitch and close you down, he's not afraid of the dirty work, or of putting his foot in.
I know Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher will be pleased he is coming. I hope it is not as a replacement for Gerrard, because that would be a big step backwards.
Liverpool need to soak Cole with the ball and he will create chances and score goals. Their crowd appreciates a good footballer and will welcome him to Anfield.
There has been much talk that he wanted to stay in London, but I made the transition as a young boy and so he can as a player at the peak of his powers.
This is no gamble by Liverpool. And for the player, it is the ideal chance for him to get his career going again. It might even convince Fabio Capello that he can be an international player to trus

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp likens Joe Cole to Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp praised Liverpool for signing Joe Cole, and compared the former Chelsea midfielder to Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish.

Redknapp was keen to sign Cole as well, but despite his best efforts, the England international has decided to join the Reds.

New Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has made Cole the first addition in his attempt to help the Reds recover from a disappointing seventh place finish last season.

Redknapp believes that the former Fulham manager’s capture of the 28-year-old is a terrific signing and that Cole could enjoy great success with Liverpool.

"What a fantastic signing Roy has made,” Redknapp told The Sun.

"Joe Cole on a free transfer is worth every penny.

"Were he under contract you would be looking at a £10million transfer fee just for starters.

"The Liverpool fans are going to love him. There has only ever been one King of the Kop and that was Kenny Dalglish, not even Kevin Keegan was good enough in his prime to take that away from him.

"It's obviously up to Roy where he plays him but you could see Joe playing just off the frontman the way Kenny used to.

"Joe wants to be involved, he doesn't want to be left to drift out on the wing any more.”

Redknapp acknowledged that Spurs did their best to sign Cole this summer, but could not complete with a historic club like Liverpool.

"We tried our very hardest to get him. The chairman made Joe a fantastic offer.

"But, in the end, we were competing with a club that has years and years of tradition and a reputation as one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"I got a lovely message from Joe to inform me of his decision.

"He explained it. I think he wants to move for football reasons. He wants to be part of a transformation at Liverpool. I think maybe getting away from London and a clean break was part of it too. Whatever his reasons he has been genuine the whole way through. Joe is a bit of a throw-back, if you like.

"He has class and his manners are impeccable. I will always see him as the 11-year-old boy I first clapped eyes on at West Ham and I can only wish him all the best and hope his move is successful."

How amazingly diplomatic 'Arry is, quite special in this day and age. No wonder all the players love him so much.

Thank goodness he has gone there and we haven't bought a good but not needed player.
Now onto the serious stuff like a centre forward like Dzeko or Suarez and get rid of our donkeys up front! We onlty need 1 player this year.

We have too many midfielders as it is. Bale and Modric can operate the left hand side, Modric can go in the middle, it's great how it is

Considering Cole has played 24 games in 2 years isn't that good reading, not worth breaking the wage structure over.

Jose used to see him as a bit of a Fancy Dan, Cole really hasn't done much for a few years for club, and has done sod all for country for many years

I don't see many Spurs fans gutted about it, but see Liverpool fans creaming themselves over it. It just goes to show how far Spurs have come, we are the future!

I think he will do well at Liverpool and he would have been a great signing for us, I do feel like we missed out, but as others have said he was only worth signing because he became availble and was a high quality player rather than being the type of player we actually need right now.

We do already have a good enough squad generally, we may need another starting centreback depending on the fitness of King and Woodgate. We certainly need a new top class striker (if not two) but any other postions are like the Cole issue only worth signing if they become availble and represent significant upgrades on what we already have (in the managers opinion)

Only if Levy pays over £20 million! Then we have to hope they're not asking for over £70k wages.

I wonder if Joe Cole bottled it about coming here. May-be he was worried about the amount of abuse he (or more importantly his family) would get from Chelsea fans if he joined us. Liverpool may still be a rival club but they are geographically far enough away to minimise the amount of abuse he might get from Chelsea fans after joining them.

Another little fall-out from the Joe Cole to Liverpool saga...Steven Gerrard has now committed his future to Liverpool on the strength of the Cole deal...just one more reason for those who are cock-a-hoop at the moment 'cos they didn't want us to sign him to stop feeling so smug:-|

More fool them really, as I can't see Cole getting the central role he wants with Gerrard in the team. One will have to sacrifice their favoured position.
