I was 11 going on 12 for this match so I used to go to bed before 9pm and only managed to watch the first half with my dad and younger brother. Ziege was standing over a free-kick and I remember my dad shouting at the TV "come on Ziege, put this one in so I can send my sons to bed knowing we've won" and Ziege duly obliged; 3-0 and they went down to 10 to boot - we were all laughing.Don't forget being 3-0 up against City in a cup game if I remember. City had a man sent off, and still managed to win 4-3 with 10 men.
Good times.
Fast forward an hour or so, I was struggling to get to sleep and I remember my dad coming upstairs and into my room to check up on me. Once he saw I was awake I asked him, "was it 3-0?". He shook his head.
"3-1?" Another shake.
"3-2?" No response.
At this point I knew deep down what had happened so I thought it best to rip the bandaid off and not delay the inevitable.
"Did we lose, dad?" He said nothing, kissed me on the forehead and left my room.
I barely slept that night and to make matters worse I remember reading Ceefax the following morning to find I wasn't alone; there was a story from someone else's dad whose son was so crushed that he had written him a letter saying he didn't want to support Spurs anymore.
