What a stressful game.

I'll do full ratings later, but Winks was MOTM by a fucking mile. His celebration gave me proper feels, amazing to see how much passion he has.

Spot on. Son was actually poor but gets an 8 for those 2 assists

I was in the gym, they had the game on one of the screens. Just about blew my load on the little Asian woman on the bike next to me.

MOTM - WINKS

Yes: Son, Kane, Dier, Verts, Lloris, Rose

Neutral: Walker, Dele, Eriksen, Wanyama

No: Janssen, Dembele

Poch:

- Thanks for starting Winks
- Don't play winks on a wing
- Great leadership. Players do seem to love you.
- Stout Defense for the most part

- Don't pair Dembele and Wanyama
- What happened to our press and quick counter?
- Pick up the passage of play please

Son for the assists.

Winks was composed and sure footed.

Dembele and Eriksen were awful (despite the latter's good start).

Verts looked off his best.

Dier looked solid.

Walker and Rose need more on the wings. Can't rely on them to go the job for what most teams use 4 players for.

Janssen... Nothing is coming off for him. Can't fault work rate but I fear it's last chance saloon time now.

Son was amazingly awful before the assists, but that's what counts I suppose.

Winks MOM by a country mile. He has to start against Chelsea.

Lloris 6
Walker 5 - I wish he could actually cross
Dier 6
Vertonghen 5
Rose 4 - see Walker plus a lot of mistakes today
Wanyama 5
Dembele 5 - He showed against Arsenal that he can be dangerous in the final third, why doesn't he try to at least get on the edge of the box or god forbid inside the box at least once in a game... wasn't very commanding defensively either in this one
Winks 8 Good game, best of a bad lot really.
Eriksen 3 Needs time on the bench now because we cannot continue with him when he's this shit.
Kane 7.5 did well considering he had little to no service for most of the match
Janssen 2 - We need new scouts.

Dele 6 tried to be positive in his play.
Son 7 - lost the ball consistently but made the impact we needed and helped us win the match in the end.
Trippier NET

What I find worrying is that nothing seems to change in the way we play this season, when it's obvious what we've been doing, bar Man City, isn't working. We have no movement, so our players have no passing alternatives except sideways or backwards or a lot of times no alternatives at all and get caught out and lose possession. We have very little tempo in our passing in general and I don't think we press even half as much as we did for most parts of last season to win the ball back. Our setpieces are shit both offensively and defensively. I know Toby is extremely important for us but there's something wrong when we're so shit at them without him.

We make terrible, stupid decisions all over the pitch far too frequently that I sometimes wonder if they've had a collective lobotomy in the summer. We are so far behind Pool and Arse in attacking movement it's rather scary.

Do you get an assist for winning a penalty?

Son stays on the bench we lose the match. He didn't and his 2 moments alone made him the game changer. He should be our first choice at ALM . At least until we get some more views of Nkoudou. Son is our only forward who persistently runs at defenders in the final third. Of course it doesn't always come off but often it does. We can't expect that to come from our full backs exclusively. How we leave him out and pick Janssen is a mystery to me.

While it's true that Son didn't win most of his dribbles after coming on, you have to take into account what a difference he made with his ability to dribble directly at the opposition. Yes, losing the ball is frustrating, but imposing that threat makes a huge difference with a ripple effect which people don't always lend attention to due to the frustration. The confidence and ability to be direct and take players on is a very important attribute in this game, and is being criminally undermined in modern times with the fascination (which I share) with the possession game.

Kane deserves plaudits as well for his goals. Both times he applied good composure in high pressure scenarios, and he got it done. I've seen excellent players badly whiff those scenarios in the first goal, and Kane took it very well. He also did rather well in his holdup play IMO, especially considering he didn't really have any wingers to work off of him.

MotM though by far is Winks. I've praised him extensively in other threads so no need here, but my god what an incredible performance. That wasn't just outstanding for a young debutante in his first start, but was impressive by any professional footballing standards. Very complete performance for a midfielder, and I look forward to further consideration for the young man in our congested midfield moving forward. He offers something which none of our other current midfielders do, and it will be great to have him along for the ride.

Let's face it we were all raging till the late show.

Only Winks played well, Kane is gradually coming back to full speed but the rest of them made mistakes all over the pitch. Like Leverkusen all over again.

At least Son ran at them, lost it eight times but created the comeback the couple of times he did muddle his way through.

That's where we are lacking, so totally predictable, backwards and sideways with no ambition other than to bore the opposition to death for trenty minutes every half. It works when the other lot commit men forward, sometimes, but not when they score from another set piece and say yeah, you can have it all day till you come into our defensive third.

Poch has shown he can tinker defensively, but he really does need to come up with something more incisive going forward. I can trembler the last time I saw a one two...

He makes good runs and isn't afraid to get into the box. Sometimes it just doesn't work, but today it thankfully did.

We were lucky. It'll be a confidence boost but hope that doesn't mask the massive issues we have in attack right now.
Up until the final minutes Poch had completely fucked it, tactics and formation was a massive mistake. Subs should have been made straight after equaliser.

Weirdly Son was utterly terrible when came on gave the ball away about ten times yet assisted two goals. He's gotta start against Chelsea though as one of only attackers who get at opposition.

Its not gonna happen for Janssen this season and I really don't want him starting another game. Sub appearances and hopefully a goal here and there will help him but I really think we're damaging him as a player keeping on starting him.
He's not anywhere near ready and him and Kane are a completely unsuited partnership.

Winks was by miles our man of the match. He's Dembele back up now, don't wanna see Dier and Wanyama start again if Dembele injured.

I don't think he's been great this season but we definitely miss Lamela. We don't seem to press at all when he's not playing.
Eriksen needs dropping, people are going overboard but he's been so poor this season.

Get Alli, Son and Lamela behind Kane and hopefully we start clicking more in attack. However I can't stop thinking there's more to it. It's no coincidence that all our defenders have been performing well yet all our attacking players have been pretty meh.

I think Poch needs to get back to the brave, high press get at the opposition style. It just feels really precise and laboured, which helps defence but we are struggling to create or threaten because of it. It's all been a bit AVB since the City game but we're 3pts off top, unbeaten and overall I think we've been a bit shit. We're right in this title race but we've got to rekindle the attacking play of last season.
