A letter from the Royal British Legion to FIFA ...

"The red poppy is a symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. It has no political, religious or commercial meaning.

"Since 1921 the Legion has protected the red poppy from political or partisan misuse and ensured it remains a symbol that can be worn with pride by those of all ages, backgrounds, and political and religious beliefs.

"The red poppy is worn so that we never forget the commitment and sacrifices of the serving, never forget those who need help to live on through the consequences of war, and always remember our troubled world needs reconciliation and peace.

"The poppy represents sacrifices made in the defence of freedom, and so the decision to wear it must be a matter of personal choice. We would never insist upon it, as to do so would be contrary to the spirit of remembrance and all that the poppy stands for."

Sums it up for me.

To be honest I read the opening post in this thread and decided people had made their minds up on the issue and I couldn't be bothered playing Devil's advocate.

Sorry; didn't mean to stifle discussion. Just my onions.

I could have discussed it further, just too lazy. It's not an anti-English stance I have on this. It's more pro-age. Why is Teresa May berating FIFA in the House of Commons when the real issue for elderly people in this country is making it through the winter? An annual debate about who's not wearing a poppy and for what reason means fuck all when people who lived through wars are still needlessly suffering and dying.

You see why I don't get involved.

Why do these things get so blown up these days?? All these big extravagant displays and people ridiculously big poppies etc. All so forced and pretentious. Really winds me up.

I've been looking around at work today and I've only seen one person wearing a poppy. They sell them at reception in our building as well.

Cookie Monster was on BBC news earlier, wearing a poppy.

I got a wristband as i am shit at doing the traditional poppy with the pin and make myself look stupid (not that it takes much anyway).

I don't wear one. I'll donate though.

Maybe on the day I'll wear one.

It's up to you, I'm not going to judge anyone if they wear one or not. I was just a bit surprised that there seems to be all this fuss about the squad not wearing them, but then you look at the public and hardly any of them are wearing them. They'll probably be more later in the week anyway.

We in Australia take this weekend very seriously. Poppy's are worn all over the country, services attended and all sales of poppy's go towards our legacy charity which helps the families of our fallen. This week all A-League teams will respect this and wear their own version of special strips.
This is my teams from Adelaide.

We celebrate and remember ALL cultures. We have many many Italian, German, Vietnamese and many more cultures living here. We remember them all.
Thats the way it should be.

Because it will get the knuckledraggers at the Sun cheering her from the rafters.

To be fair to her she was asked the question during the Prime Ministers Question time so she had to say something about it.

So what's the outcome? are they going to 'defy Fifa' and then be charged? or did they reach a compromise in the end?

Or in true reality TV politics style, do we have to wait until tomorrow to find out what happens next?

I haven't followed this much in the last week or so..

It's a load of bollocks, drummed up to get everyone concerned (FA, politicians etc) a bit of jingoistic love.

FIFA already dealt with this issue 5 years ago, saying it was perfectly acceptable to them for England to wear black armbands with a poppy on on Remembrance Day/week games.

Anyone with half a brain can understand why FIFA have policy preventing national teams from promoting religious, political, military issues etc on shirts - Europe (and the world in general) is rife with historical conflicts that would be getting stirred up every fucking international match if it wasn't kept in check, like national football isn't partizan and tribal enough already.

Ireland/England, the Balkans, WW2, most of fucking Africa, the Middle East, etc etc.

FIFA have also pointed out that it was the home nation FAs that introduced the rule.

Why did FIFA wait until now to charge Ireland with commemorating the Easter Rising when it happened in February?
