Should we bring Comolli back to revive our transfer situation?

ok then, 3/4/5 are not opinion, 1 and 2 could appear that way, unless you know by being in the game.

I dont need to tell you anything else.

It seems odd that Liverpool employed a 'director of football' (and intend to fill the position vacated by Comolli) if what's happening is that Dalglish is picking the players and they are just negotiating the deals?

What's the point of that? I thought a DOF was supposed to identify the players needed??

And even if Dalglish did identify the players surely Commoli should have had a level of judgement to deem whether the players were good enough?

Although saying that Dalglish is considered King up there so maybe Commoli just didn't have enough say in the running of things at the club.

Maybe Commoli thinks Dalgish is a **** too like most of us on here do.

OK now this is ITK

Mr Commoli is an arrogant cock whose previous links to star signings are teneous at best.

He is the most arrogant man you will have the pleasure of meeting and Daglish and most people in football detest him and this has been on the cards since day 1 of Kennys tenure.

He gets found out everywhere he goes and Daniel wouldnt go near him again with a bargepole. He didnt trust him. He was not the saviour for us previously and Frank Arnesen was much better than him.

You really could have Mickey Mouse scouting the players we go for and they could find the next Messi at 15-16 but if Daniel deems it as too expensive he wont pay for them and we will miss out again.

The problem with us and star players or even bringing in 'up and coming' players isnt the scouting network, it is the chairman and his reluctance to spend and his insistence on being involved in every deal.

I feel better for writing that.

JJ, Very interesting comments, some of which I suspected.

One question (you may have been asked before), has DL's reluctance to spend over the last few windows been to do with, just that, his reluctance to spend, or is he holding back to see what Harry plans to do?

Apologies if you have answered this before.

I would rather bring back compulsory anal probing than have that rat faced **** Comolli back at the club.

There'll be a 'shall we bring back Ramos' thread next.

Big to to Comolli - he is a clown.

If we wanted to employ someone to identify us players within our budgets who can come in and improve the team, then go poach the guy Carr at Newcastle. Almost every signing he has made has been a success, and all within a reasonable budget.

Other than a little spell of good fortune at the scum he really has been the pits everywhere he has been. Even his beloved St Etienne did not want him in the end. If he were to rejoin us I could only ever see one outcome and it would be us fans who would suffer.(n)

Graham Carr was here under Jol and Hughton. Hughton took up to Newcastle when he left us in 200

A goal.com journalist this morning said that Commoli sacked Carr.

I never knew he worked for us previously.

This is a genuine discussion?? The man who undermined Jol and got him sacked? The man who calims to have discovered Henry to much derisory laughter from Wenger? The man who identified nearly £100m worth of "talent" for Liverpool?

Wow

Well, one thing we know for certain. Many here have speculated that JJ was Daniel Levy himself. I think that pretty much invalidates that argument. :)

At best we could offer him a limited budget to bring in youth players. Think there are better out there. He helped attract some good players to our club but can't say he had the keenest eye for talent.

No, but we should bring in a better DOF to work with Rodgers. The ideal combination IMO and one more in tune with how the model is supposed to work - i.e. DOF and a proper COACH who works with players day to day.

It wouldn't work with Redknapp because he is a kind of poor man's DOF anyway - in that he delegates most of the coaching.

But a young up and comer like Rodgers whose raison d'être is coaching could really benefit from an experienced DOF with god global contacts and knowledge. Someone like Monchi would be worth considering - and Rodgers speaks spanish.

But we would have to allow for the transition and not piss our pants at the first sign of teething.

I like the DoF idea, but it very much depends on what you consider to be the role of a DoF. For us, given Levy's negotiating skills and command of our budget, we're looking for someone who buys into the long-term vision for the club in terms of building and sustaining a top-level squad, and is skilled at identifying the players who will help us realise it. This can either be something the manager looks after, or the role of the DoF. In this case it comes down to what kind of manager you have, funnily enough, although it couldn't ever have happened, Redknapp could have done with a DoF, because imo his primary concern is overly skewed towards the first team. Someone like Rodgers on the other hand (from reading his interviews), builds from the junior levels right on through and has a vision of what he wants.

Last thing is that if you do go down the DoF route it's essential you get the right man. I don't think in any way, shape, or form that man's Comolli. I think he's had a few hits, but on his own at Liverpool, with greater responsibility, he's really naused it up. Funnily enough for someone in the sports quant business, I also think there's lots wrong with a "Money-ball" approach to scouting, a little bit of knowledge, in the wrong hands, is very dangerous. I honestly think Comolli doesn't know what he's doing in that regard.

I think the proof is in the pudding in terms of our squad and our buying power. Compare us with our peers, the likes of Villa, Everton, Sunderland and Newcastle, and ask who has the better squad and more money to spend? Then look at the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Utd, with their years and years of CL revenues and ask yourself whether in Levy's time at the club the gap in squad quality has narrowed or widened, and how that's happened.

I realise that it's frustrating when we miss out on this or that near thing because of a few million here or there, particularly if like you, you know precisely which near thing, and how much we missed out by. But I think each time you get pissed off, you're getting pissed off on a short-term basis, and a cumulation of short-term grievances even if they happen over a period of years, don't together form the basis of a valid longer-term criticism. As I say, we have to look at where we are, and compare it with where we were, and where our rivals are, compared to where they were.

Some Comolli signings over the years:

Zokoroa- £8m
Bent- £16m
Bentley- £16m
Pavlyuchenko- £14m
Downing- £18m
Adam- £8m
Carroll (who I still think will be very good)- £35m
Henderson- £20m

I'll assume this thread was a joke.

I'm pretty sure it is spelt ZOKARA;)

He bought us Modric, Berbativ, Bale, BAE and Kaboul. Scouting-wise it wasn't a complete disaster. Lack of cohesion between himself and Jol and then choosing the wrong manager to 'take us to the next level' were his downfalls.
