Provisional squad: Lloris, Cudicini, Naughton, Walker, Caulker, Gallas, Dawson, Vertonghen, Livermore, Huddlestone, Sigurdsson, Lennon, Bale, Mason, Dembele, Carroll, Townsend, Dempsey, Defoe, Adebayor.
ade

bale sandro hudd lennon
verty caulker gallas

At least we rest Sandro

Given this squad I would go with:

------------------------------Lloris-------------------------------
Walker-------Dawson----------------Caulker------Naughton--
--------------------Carroll-----------Livermore-----------------
---Lennon-------------------Sig------------------Townsend/Demps
-------------------------Adebayor---------------------------------

I would give Townsend and Demps each a half to show what they can do on the left. Later on bring in Mason and if possible some minutes for Dembele.
If we aren't able to score Bale/ Defoe possible to come in

Lloris

Walker Caulker Dawson Vertonghen

Lennon Huddlestone Livermore Bale

Dempsey

Adebayor

Subs: Cudicini, Naughton, Gallas, Sandro, Dembélé, Sigurdsson, Defoe.

Gallas, Sandro and Defoe rested for Sunday - presume Dembélé isn't right to start for tomorrow, so have him on the bench for some spell in the last 30 mins.

I would give Carlo a match once its a given that Lloris will start on Sunday!

Really considering it a must win game, play a goalie that hasnt played all season and whos last appearance was shipping in 5 against the chavs.

3 at the back is a bit mental I reckon.

Naughton at LB, Bale to start. Not sure who to play with Ade but I don't think Dempsey should be on the pitch. Tempting to play Livermore and Sandro and have Carroll sit in front with Ade up top.

3 at the back in the new 4-2-3-1, flavour of the month these days. Saw Juve use it against Chelsea to devestating affect.

I think it could work for us using Bale and Walker as wing backs...but that's for another thread.

City have been using it to devastating effect as well. In that it's devastated them when they've tried it!

I do agree it could work for us though. You can imagine a 3-5-1-1 fitting our players nicely.

lol yeah, although funnily or typically the only time it's worked for them was against us. :(

Wigan were pretty impressive using it towards the end of last season when they beat Arsenal, Newcastle, Man Utd, Martinez was confusing the hell out of other teams. great to watch.

I think we should be using Bale as far forward as possible and forget all this fancy wing back stuff. It's all lovely on a computer game but doesn't really work out in real life because he has muscles and lungs and inconvenient stuff like only 2 eyes. If I'm the opposing team and I see that Bale is playing in the defensive line (no matter what fancy term his position might be given) I will have a smile on my face.

Might work for 15 minutes at the end of some games, but not 90 minutes and not too often I hope.

I think Sig should start behind Ade, maybe it's time to recall him plus Ade isn't gonna be playing any league matches for the next couple of weeks.

I don't agree. The majority of the times when Bale has been most destructive have come when he's been able to run with pace from deep. Some of those times he was a left-midfielder (the two games against Inter for example) and in others he was a left-back. What's common is that Bale's best attacking play comes when he's going at full tilt. He's fast with very good ball control but he's not a magician a la Messi who can beat everyone from a standing start.

I agree with the bit in bold, but we have played him at LB this season and he was poor.

I think that the human element has to be considered. Yes, he is better going at pace, but we can't expect him to be sprinting the length of the pitch every 5 minutes. I think that by playing him at WB will decrease the number of runs he makes in the final third simply because he has to run farther!

The only way I could see it working is if the rest of the team are able to shift across and completely take his defensive duties away so he doesn't have to start sprinting back if the attack dies. That's fine if you can pull it off, but will generally start to leave us open in the centre and midfielders move to cover, and if we start sacrificing the centre of the pitch whilst our opponents are counter-attacking it could get messy quickly.

So like I say, not a plan for a full 90 minutes in my view. We'll see if he (and the rest of the team) can pull it off though.
