Name and shame time as I think the original Lamela hater has been banned, this will have to do..
Anyway, back to the ratings, Lamela was different class. Thought the OP was a bit harsh on Eriksen but I only saw the second half. Fans were great tonight too (it seemed)
Hi there, OP here!
I genuinely forgot Eriksen was on the pitch for about 15 minutes first half then remembered and decided to watch him. Just seems in dreamland half the time, although i'll credit him with his shot.
Up against a smaller European team, you'd expect a lot more from him.

I agree. A lot of silly mistakes and losses of possession. I lost count of the times he tried a simple sideways pass that went straight to the opponent. I'm a big fan and I think he's going to be great for us, but apart from a few positive glimpses this was a match he'll want to forget.

Also, I'm very, very pleased that Kaboul has now played 120+ and 90+ minutes for us in 8 days. Very promising. So happy to see Capoue out there tonight as well.

Lastly, finally we saw what Lamela can do. I hope he starts on sunday.

Lennon have been a big part of our squad for years and is probably one of the leaders in the dressing room. Not so hard to understand why he gets picked when he is fit at the moment when I'd say none of our wingers are convincing. He was really important for us last season and when he is on form he is a danger to any defender in the PL. I guess AVB hopes Lennon will get back on form asap by puting him straight into the fire and a experienced player like Lennon should be able to handle that.
Still doesn't explain why he starting on the left when he has never performed well there. Playing a player because he has a good history makes sense, but that doesn't mean you should try crowbar said player into the team. Lennon is a right winger, not a left winger.

Was at the game and must admit after watching us not score enough this season i paid extra attention to runs off the ball.
My thoughts:

Freidel- 5, made one save which he palmed back into the striker....I dnt mind him being around but if lloris was injured I'd rather Gomes be gk?

Naughton- 5, feel bad as he's outve position but invited pressure by cutting in so much.
Walker- 7, very positive in his forward running and put few gd crosses in.. No silly mistakes.
Vertonghen- 7, oozes class not a foot wrong
Kaboul 6.5, we will be a better side with him back. Was a little rusty but powerful and forward thinking driving on at times.

Capoue 6, did fine after a lay off and is a gd option to rotate with Sandro.who is neater passing wise but not quite as gd defensively.
Dembele 6, started great but got very casual and sloppy second half.

Eriksen 6, got better throughout and was positive second half in running with the ball. Poor first half though and is a little sloppy with his touch sometimes putting us in trouble. Not sharp enough.
Sigurdson 5, didn't do much right or wrong.
Lamela 8, very gd all game as he ran at them and was positive. Was always most likely to score and on this showing will light up the lane by the end of the season.

Sub paulinho 7, his running in beyond Defoe made all the difference as the tempo raised when he came on. Gave a new impetus to the team that was a catalyst to improved second half.

Defoe 3.5, I've always been a massive fan, used to prefer him to Keane bk in the day, however!!! He was appalling tonight, his movement is absolutely terrible and he isn't making runs into the box enough. He doesn't link play or get in the danger zone enough. If I hear anyone slate soldado and encourage the idea of Defoe playing over him I will be at a loss. Somebody tell john Hartson to watch actual football games rather than JD's best goals DVD. Soldado is another level to JD in this performance

Hopefully tonight was a watershed performance for Lamela. He doesn't deserve to start ahead of Townsend yet but he should certainly take Lennon's place. I can understand Lennon playing away from home because his pace is an asset when counterattacking but at home against a packed defence he offers little and Lamela has made a strong case to start.

I thought Capoue was very good and I hope his substitution was in order to save him for Sunday with Sandro possibly carrying a knock. Kaboul also got good match time and his pace and power should see him regain a starting place in the premiership side soon. We might not need him against Newcastle but we certainly will against the Mancs in the next 2 fixtures.

Eriksen was poor in the 1st half but improved markedly in the 2nd.

I'm glad Defoe got his record. Now he can leave in January with no hard feelings. We might even get some decent dosh for him if we can find a manager as deluded as recent TV commentators who seem to think he's Messi with two cocks. Apart from his penalty he was fucking woeful again today against a side from a country that doesn't even exist.

Load up, load up, with rubber bullets.

I thoroughly enjoyed that game tonight. I know some will be whinging about the lack of thrills and spills, but for me there were plenty of positives. First, the crowd deserve a big up. Continually made noise and atmosphere and got what they deserved, a good performance, a couple of goals and knockout qualification.

Yes, some familiar tropes were in attendance, a very dynamic opponent committing all their energy to defending and closing space, and our combination of an absolutely dreadful striker and some slightly poor executions of that final ball or finish (Defoe again) made the patience last longer than it might, but in these games patience is exactly what you need and I'm pleased to say the team showed it, as did the crowd, and both got their just rewards.

Our approach play was very good throughout. And for the most part, considering the insipid imbecile we had up front - how stupid do you have to be to make a run offside, know you are offside, and still call for the pass, at least twice - it wasn't for the lack of trying, just a genuine lack of possibility, with a very occasional waste of a real chance to turn a "situation" into a quality chance.

With the exception of Defoe and Naughton I think this was actually a better line up than we have been playing in the league lately. 76% Possession, 86% success, this group, with Capoue at it's heart, and Lamela at it's head, had more zip about, and players took more care of the ball, this eventually wore down the Sheriff of No(ambit)tioningham. It's when you are continually sloppy or allow the oppo to fluster you into carelessness with the ball that they get their tail up and can fuck you over. This side never allowed that.

With the exception of our back up RB at LB, I think this is clearly our best defensive combo too. Certainly the best CB pairing.

Unfortunately this leads us into WalkerStupidWatch. It was going to be when he idiotically decided to dummy a header (55.57) from a keepers clearance that would have then allowed their player through one v one if Dembele hadn't chased the guy back. But unfortunately Walker tried another one of these dummies from another clearance, and this time their player picked it up and a few seconds later they'd scored a goal completely out of the blue. What is amazing - or very much not - is that Walker hadn't learnt from the fuck up a few minutes earlier. His attacking play hadn't really yielded much again, but otherwise he'd had a very competent game and was frequently involved in build up. But he does really daft things every game. Not usual daft, or run of the mill mistakes.

I also don't get AVB's sub again. Defoe should have gone for Kane, and when Kane did come on he did well enough but why play him at ALM. It's not his position. Either take Defoe off or Eriksen or take Sig off and move Eriksen and let Kane play down the centre. I also though Eriksen was just beginning to utilise the space later on when AVB subbed him.

Mostly I just don't get how Defoe could have been left on that pitch.

Last word has to go to Lamela, who was outstanding. Got himself all over the pitch, constantly looking for the ball and looking to ignite something - 76 passes, 86% success - scored, won the penalty. That's Lennon³.

Individual euroscepticisms

Friedel - Very little to do, and when called on, did very little.

Walker - He's a very silly boy, and he is coming out to play. Every week.

Kaboul - Looking pretty good.

Vertonghen - Good game.

Naughton - meh. Stupid foul at the end was typical right footed player playing left side tackle.

Capoue - Very decent knock for a player who's been out for a couple of months.

Dembele - Very decent performance.

Lamela - A superb performance that had plenty of everything. Energy, graft, bit guile and a goal.

Eriksen - These games are tough in the hole, it's where there is least space and time on the whole pitch. But was still a bit ho diddly hum. Sad thing is I think he was just beginning to make some things happen when he was tugged.

Sigurdsson - some nice stuff, some flimsy stuff. OK.

Exactly RE Defoe. He doesnt understand what is needed off him. It is NOT dropping into the number 10 hole to pick up the ball..... Cant remember how many times i counted him drifting too deep and taking up others space.....

Agree with this and was one of the reasons Erikson didnt shine last night. Does it seem like he would want to play deeper in a more 'Modric' type role?

Who Erikson? Im not sure he would shine in that deeper role.... I think its no surprise that since starting alongside Defoe, Erikson has struggled to make an impact. The West Ham game was the first and all the cup games since his space has been stolen by JD coming too deep to pick up the ball at the wrong times and his focal striking point has been non existent and making no where near enough runs if only to make space for other players.

Against half decent opposition Defoe just does not cut it at the moment.

Good assessment, Capuoe in the first half looked like man who had been playing regularly for weeks. Really Really impressive!

He has struggled since Norwich really but I think its just a matter of getting used to the physicality of the prem and a new more advanced (than he played at Ajax) role.

Agree JD been v.poor of late against mediocre opposition. Kane starting to show some promise so would prefer to see him given some minutes - if ADE gets reintegrated can see JD off at xmas try (and fail) to get on the plane to Rio.

We played with more sense of purpose, cut out a lot of the slow, slow, slow, slow, slow play from the back.
Helped by star turn from Lamela and a very defensive opposition who had the skills to hurt us if they had wanted to.

Friedel......5..Not a good advert for Spurs pulling power
Walker......6+ Sensible performance. I'm getting worried about the boy. Almost Zen like calm.
Kaboul......6+.Another step on the road to full recovery.
Verts........7...Pleased to see him taking responsibility for bringing the ball out.
Naughton..6...Ok. Offered some width but too indecisive on the ball.
Capoue.....7..Good. Longer balls forward didn't come off. Might with Soldado up front.
Dembele....6..Bit dozy on the ball at times. Like Stanley Mathews only one trick but it always seems to work.
Lamela......8+.Didn't have to wait as long as I thought. Class. Must avoid the Townsend head down syndrome
Eriksen......6..Improved in the second half. Surprisingly still adapting for such a class player.
Siggy........6..Some nice touches but doesn't have the speed to go both sides.
Defoe.......4.Congratulations. Can we let him go now.

BC.

What about the three times (at least, I didn't pay attention to the whole game) I saw Kaboul run the ball straight into the opposition in semi-dangerous areas? What about his shaky first touch throughout and in all truth quite a bit of hesitancy at times?

What about Vertonghen running the ball out and losing it first half, from which they really should have scored?

If this is Dawson or Walker, we get a dissertation on the subject (see your post above). Kaboul and Vertonghen get 'good game'. I guarantee the former two do that they do not get 'good game'.

The rest I pretty much agree with, as I do most of the time, for what its worth.

My anticipated love affair with Mr Lamela is starting to blossom. The votes say it all. As of now he leads with 249 and Eriksen and Friedel are second with 2 !

MOM - Lamela
Runner-up - Vertonghen
