Has to be Toby. I'll be the first one to criticize him and thought he'd struggle with his height but he was absolutely immense tonight. Coming back from the bandaged head he responded immediately.
There was that one passage where he challenges the header from Wood and makes up 6 yards in the blink of an eye and blocks a shot from Barnes that really summed it up for me. He won nearly every second half ball over players with a good 2 inches on him when it counted.

Ratings:

Lloris - 7. Done very well in the air on the late corners and managed to hold two very tricky low shots in that nervy first half. He's still underrated as a GK I think.

Doherty - 5.5. He was good defensively but he just looks out of sync with his touches and has little confidence crossing. I'm underwhelmed by the signing and considering his wingback history it doesn't make a ton of sense. At least he's HG and good in the air.
Toby - 8. Heroic performance to say the least.
Dier - 6.5. He was quite good aerially and marshalled Wood well. Bizarrely out of position a couple times and that flick was so stupid, but still I think he is our best CB in matches like this.
Davies - 5. Awful going forward, awful crossing, but he's very good at knowing what to do at the back post and was a lot better in the second half. Reguilon should start vs. Brighton vs. Lamptey.

Hojbjerg - 7.5. Great performance, he is so good at anticipating the second ball off of headers. No clue why Southampton supporters slag him off, he's really come on the past few weeks.
Sissoko - 7. Does nothing offensively and I still don't think he should be a player we rely on but he worked his boots off today. Also very good at organizing the midfield, I think he did well.
Tanguy - 6.5. He was definitely good and set up Son with a beautiful pass. I still think he's a little unsuited to being the main creative force in the midfield and that long-awaited Lo Celso/N'Dombele midfield will help him.

Son - 7. Good generally, worked very hard. Great header, that was difficult.
Kane - 8. Incredibly intelligent, hard working, and look at how much it meant to him at FT. Love this guy so much.
Lucas - 5. Poor.

I’m going with Hugo, been a long time since seen him command the box like that and those crosses he plucked out of the air towards the end were gold and too often recently goals.

Brainfart aside, I thought he and Toby were very solid today
I agree.

I say that with tongue in cheek.

But that kind of shit is unexceptable. We've all been waxing lyrical about our insistence to create trouble for ourselves and these constant mistakes and for Dier try to a FIFA move on 6'3 pressing unit beggars belief.

We'd all be cursing him if that had cost us the win or points. I cant brush that stuff under the carpet.

I said before the game that Dier is capable defender and could even improve if he could just accept his limitations. I stick by that.

But other than that and some terrible long passes he played well. 7/10.

Toss up between Sissoko and Davies for me.

Why?

Because fuck you :D

But also because i games like these, when the opposition does so well at nullifying your strengths, you need your squad to keep on going and going and going. Second half Davies and Sissoko cleaned up so many messes created by our "skill" players. It just doesn't get noticed.

Well Mourinho notices it.

Davies for me. Get going up and down all day and while he doesn't have Reggie's amazing offence he was crucial in stopping us conceding.

So erm I think Ndombele tried to create but could do more...

Kane MoTM because really his two things won us the game, hid headed clearance off the line and his flick on for the corner, as well as gettign the corner.

In terms of critique, Doherty really is meh for me... youd think he would do a bit more where he wouldnt do much defending but really meh. Davies was better but also meh but you kinda expected that whereas with Doherty I expected more up front.

Deserved I'm afraid my friend. Dier was solid bar one almost calamitous mistake.

I'm more headscratching over the total reverse on Tanguy opinion. Now he can literally do no wrong. He was almost completely taken out of the game after 20 minutes. If his name was Eriksen or dele this forum would be howling for blood. But it wasnt' for lack of work rate - it was just Burnley doing a great job of covering his threat.

Which is why Sissoko and Davies were so important.

Toby MOTM for me ... he was class tonight, so assured and so solid, using his experience very well. ?

Hugo was immense from set pieces especially the corners in the second half, since Jose he is defo more commanding on the pitch.

The HOJ immense again

Sissoko had a solid game defensively props to him

Kane and Sonny ???

Definitely Toby. He owned Wood today, despite being sucker punched by Barnes early on. Him and Dier were great at CB. Loris was very good too coming for those corners as they were building momentum.
Dier great?

I counted at least 4 times that he passed directly to a Burnley player in a very dangerous area

I don't remember that to be honest. If he did it couldn't have been in a dangerous area. He was strong and battled well all night. Hate to think what it would have been like with Sanchez back there tonight.

jose 8 great team selection and result and post match presser. We could’ve lost this as didn’t play great today but we ground out the 1-0 which is a Jose classic away from home in a tricky game, we move onwards and upwards.

Toby heroic. Love the man.

In this positive spirit we’re all adopting after a great result, I’ll give props to Davies for an excellent block not long before we scored. He’s not what we want in a full back, but he’s dependable at the back and gives it his all. Need him in this squad.
Forgot about that! I gave him 5.5 as thought his passing was a little sloppy but on rethinking this and in the spirit of positivity I’ll up him to a 5.75.
