Whatever happened to the Doherty of Wolves?

Doherty of wolves was the master of one twos and making runs off the ball and attacking the box as a right wing back. In a new team and new position he will need time to adapt

Toby was a fucking gem. Hojbjerg, Ndombele and Kane all super too. Son quiet until his goal, but that's why he's world class.

Lloris 7

Doherty 5
Toby 9
Dier 8
Davies 5.5

PEH 6
Sissoko 6
Ndombele 6

Lucas 6
Kane 7
Son 8

jose 8 great team selection and result and post match presser. We could’ve lost this as didn’t play great today but we ground out the 1-0 which is a Jose classic away from home in a tricky game, we move onwards and upwards.

Toby heroic. Love the man.

How does Son get an 8? He literally had one moment in the entire game. An important moment sure but an "8"?

This is the point I'm trying to make (and getting loads of disagrees :D ) - Davies and Sissoko were our two most involved in "moments" across the 90 minutes. They were - for better or worse - "in the game" far more than any other players on the pitch.

And when the chips were down Mourinho chose to keep them on the pitch.

I don't always agree with Mou but I can see why he made that choice tonight.

Nb: it doesn't mean I think we can't improve on both those players. That's not the point.

I'm torn between Kane and Toby for MOTM, but have gone for Kane due to his two decisive contributions that ultimately won us the match. A solid performance from Toby though, winning aerial duels against two big forwards and holding our defence together.

Another impressive performance from Hojbjerg. Sissoko also made an important contribution defensively.

Davies and Dier both defended very well for the most part, but had a dodgy moment (Dier's flick and Davies' misplaced pass inside).

Great reaction and finish by Son for the goal and overall a good performance, but could have shot / passed earlier from good positions on 2 or 3 other occasions.

Moura struggled to impose himself and didn't justify being selected ahead of Lamela, Bale and Bergwijn. Possibly better reserved for more open games. I think Lamela did enough tonight (and in previous games) to be first choice on the right - at least until Bale is properly match fit.

Once again I wasn't totally convinced by Doherty. Not a terrible performance, but it looks like he's still settling into our system.

Rodon's appearance shows the manager trusts him and that he isn't just one for the future.

Went for Moussa , nothing spectacular but did plenty of covering and a few crucial tackles, whoever gets the vote think it has to be a defensive player, tough game but result that mattered .

I think saying "we played badly and won" is a really simplistic way of seeing the game.

If Burnley aren't on it they're fucking shite as they lack quality. That's how we beat them 5-0 last season. But today Burnley were very fucking on it. Dyche had them fighting for every ball and they were seriously out there to prove a point. They had 1 point in 4 and we were their first big game of the season - they wanted to put down a marker and would've caused most teams serious problems playing like they did tonight. Thankfully we matched them in intensity throughout, which really impressed me. They would've bullied plenty of previous Spurs teams into submission today.

The problem for me was simply the lineup. We played against a narrow, physical team with 2 fullbacks who aren't quick and prefer to come inside. This shrunk the pitch and allowed Burnley to keep things tight. We really needed at least one of Reguilon or Aurier to provide genuine pace and width to create space for the rest of the team.

Overall I thought the CBs did very well (although Dier got lucky with that Woods handball), Hojbjerg was excellent and both Sissoko and Ndombele had solid games. Kane and Son tried admirably but were harried and closed down constantly but obviously deserve huge credit for that one moment of inspiration. The weak links were clearly the fullbacks but for me that was more down to their selection rather than their actual performances which were fairly typical of them. Oh and Lucas was Lucas.

I think Jose rode a very fine line today and overall I think he got the selection wrong and got away with it. However he also deserves credit for motivating the team as if we'd been complacent or not up for it tonight Burnley would've ruined us. Regardless that's a fucking huge 3 points and one of the hardest games we'll have all season.

Toby deserves man of the match for having to endure that thug bs in 2020. I am sure the opposition get away with far more against us than they do against others. There was one point their player didn't just kick the ball in play away to slow things down he then went and kicked the ball off the cone as well...nothing done. I am also giving whoever did the random fixture list a 9 for getting that tempo destroying dirty anti football out the way early in the season so my eyes don't need to burn again for 12 months at least hopefully longer they deserve to go down.

Totally agree.

Find the vote for Kane absolutely baffling. This was one of his most ineffectual games of the year. The movement and creativity across the front 4 was lacking badly all game.

Yes he got back defended well at times but he's World fucking class.

Think he'd be rofling at the people giving him MOTM for this game. He lowered his colours due to a very good defensive display by Burnley. A defensive display we matched. Because of defensive players. Who deserve some recognition.

Toby was excellent tonight. It’s the best match I’ve seen him play for a long time and reinforces my belief that he will be vital to our performance in the league this season.

Toby was brilliant today, won a lot of headers even after being roughed up and also made two crucial blocks. Lovely ball to Kane also early on.

Lloris 8- Second half specially good, commanded his box from corers. Hugely improved since lockdown.

Doherty 5- Ok going forward but looks stiff on the ball and slow to release. Very worrying defensively especially 1v1.
Toby 9- See above
Dier 7- Defeded well in the most part, lost his man from 2 corners and was clumsy late on.
Davies 6.5- Was a little wasteful on the ball in good positions, but made a few crucial blocks.

PEH-7 - Good game, controlled the iddle second half and won lots of second balls. Gave possession away in dangerous spots twice.
Sissoko 5.5- Athletic and covered at RB a few times but hes so dterimental to our play. All passes are behind the player or have no pace on the ball. Hides from the ball and its noticeable the players dont trust giving hi the ball when players are near.
Ndombele 8- Was our best player while he was on the pitch. Great turn and first time passing put us on the front foot and looked the only way wed score was through him. Unlucky not to have an assist and also noticeably pressed very well.

Lucas-6 Had one of his games where he didnt get involved. Touch was heavy a few times but turned nicely to set up an attack.
Son 7- Did well to score the winner but wasnt as sharp as in recent games. Had a good chance in 2nd half and held the ball up well.
Kane 7.5- Wasnt at his best but a great goal line header and an assist demontrate his impact on the game.

Lamela 7.5 - Added an aggression and was more tenacious thatn Moura, brilliant as a sub to up the tempo and keep the ball when ahead too.
Lo celso-6.5- Looked composed and set up a good chance for Lamela.

Lloris was great on crosses and dealt with the routine shots that came at him calmly and assuredly.

Doherty was a mixed bag, he helped peg them back and showed lovely composure as well as aerial strength but equally he didn’t enjoy being run at and needed to track better on a few occasions.

Alderweireid was magnificent, had Barnes in his pocket despite the filthy bastard’s antics and dealt with every long ball easily.

Dier equally played very well, slightly marked down for almost getting pickpocketed by Wood but otherwise kept concentration up to deal with the barrage of flighted balls and crosses from deep.

Davies was solid defensively, with a couple of strong challenges, but struggled pushing forward.

Sissoko was good covering Doherty with some solid tracking and a couple of key tackles, but was frustrating on the ball seemingly needing an eternity to make basic decisions.

Højbjerg again split the centre backs well, took responsibility for getting on the ball and starting forward forays, and read everything that Burnley tried really well.

Lucas was pretty ineffectual. Worked hard out of possession but just couldn’t find the space he wanted when we attacked.

Ndombele was good, some lovely footwork and passing, quick thinking and robust too. Still not completely there off the ball, albeit improving, but on it was our most progressive player by some distance.

Son wasn’t superb, mainly because he was given no space to do his thing, but his determination to find a route to goal was ultimately rewarded. Made strong runs and as ever looked in tune with Kane, and his header was lovely. Should’ve been more decisive from the Ndombele through ball.

Kane like Son wasn’t at his very best and it was mainly due to being starved of space and time, but also like Son it’s just exactly what you want when it’s not going quite to plan. Saved a goal at one the, made a goal at the other, seems harsh on Alderweireid but he’s my man of the match.

Lamela injected fight and urgency, he definitely helped us keep the ball where we wanted it after coming on.

Lo Celso played well, spending his cameo linking play effectively and making sure Burnley couldn’t overly commit.

Rodon is very tall.

Lloris made a couple of lovely catches from corners.

Dier is a lucky boy for getting away with that utterly stupid attempted flick. What a daft thing to do and would have been rightly slaughtered if we had conceded from that, needs to cut clever shit like that out. Why he would try that in such a dangerous position I do not know. Aside from that good game and we got a clean sheet! ??

Toby was outstanding and played some lovely long balls.

I think Davies is better as a centre back now as felt we really missed Reguilòn‘s pace and skill down the left, although was probably wise to rotate him.

Doherty did a couple of nice things but I’m still not 100% convinced. Aurier‘s pace was more dangerous and the latter seems more skilled attacking, although makes me shit myself a bit defensively at times.

Ndombele’s passing continues to be absolutely amazing. Everytime he has the ball you feel confident he’s gonna make good use of it.

Sissoko and PEH made a good job of battling in midfield and we didn’t concede as much possession as we did against West Ham.

Moura didn’t do too much aside from one nice bit of skill first half.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a lovely headed assist before, lovely set up by Kane and a good finish by Son who had been a little wasteful prior to that. But our two world class played combined when needed in a tight game to give us the goal we needed with that bit of absolute class.

When Lamela came on I think he actually delivered a decent corner as our set piece takers really have been shocking for a number of seasons now - from Eriksen taking our corners and never being massively impressive to Son now taking them and also not being too great at them. Hopefully Bale will resolve this.

Kane not just our Player of the Season thus far, but the Premier League Player of the Season if he maintains this level. Complete player at the top of his game.

Tbf, if he keeps up this level he’s on track to score 30 and assist 50, would be handy I suppose.

In general play, alderweireld, Ndombele, and lloris were the standouts for me, especially Toby. However, Kane saved the game at one end and set up the crucial winner to win the game at the other. Therefore, it’s kane for me. Toby with a vintage classy and battling performance though, top marks there.

a few negatives in this game but without dwelling on them it was a team effort

I thought PEH held us together well for the 90 minutes, gee he has been a god send, he was my MOM

'arry, Hugo, Toby and Ndom all had good games

Back 4 defended well against the shower of a football team. Davies could still be crossing now and still be finding a Burnley head whilst they are tucked up in bed. Reggie is 10 times better but I guess it’s about the squad. Doherty is a concern for me. I just don’t see what he brings to the table. Granted he doesn’t make rash tackles like Aurier but I actually think Aurier is a better fit. ( I’m drunk) Kane is just a masterpiece. Had a quiet game but still.
