Certainly sounds the true heir to Modric we've looked for but that being said, I do hope we look to adopt a 433 style to make full use of the passing capabilities and tempo controlling attributes that AI possesses.
yeah he would be a great signing if it happened. I was gutted when Madrid signed him actually as there were rumours flying around then that we were interested and he was the kind of player everyone wanted to sign at spurs as he was very much in the moutinho style. Good passer, good skill on the ball, can do the defensive work and just oozes quality. Sociedad changed up their formation though so sometimes played a 433 sometimes a 4231 depending on the opposition but illirramendi was always the main player to control the tempo of the team and setup counter attacks with griezman and vela.

Just don't hope this is another example of us aiming too high and failing, only to end up with another Campbell/stambo/Fazio and conveniently a very healthy bank balance.

I do like us to aim for the best, but we must have adequate backup targets if it falls through, as it sounds like Asier hold out to see what teams come in or him.

Just not another "we tried, but the deal proved to hard in the end", without solid backup options please (y)

I think when we aim for this kind of player it is inevitable we'd face stiff competition from bigger clubs - it's worth the risk though as most signings we can get are consolidating rather then progressive.

I'd rather us be brave and stick with what we have unless we can attract a first name on team sheet type of CM or see out games experienced head. Anyone else will be a squad filler and we have the likes of Winks and Onomah waiting to take their chance already

Yes i also like us to be brave in the transfer market, but if history has shown us anything it's that these kind of deals often falls through and we end up with some stop gap signing instead of an actual adequate player.

If both clubs want a deal to happen then generally the fee will be negotiated before there is any sort of official bid made.

Exactly and regardless of what has happened in the past I would imagine Levy and Perez are on good terms and it would be a straightforward conversation only the lines of;

Levy: Would you sell him for market value
Perez: Yes
Levy: can we talk to his representatives
Perez: Yes

Think it would be a loan deal with an option to buy IMO if it happens at all. Don't like to say it but he just seems to have Arsenal written all over him

I think surely Spurs should be able to find a defensive midfielder from SOMEWHERE lol. :-S

Where are these Alonso comparisons coming from. He's nothing like Alonso. He's a deep lying midfielder who uses the ball and presses well. The Alonso range of passing is not part of his game.

This question isn't about this transfer in particular, just in general. Does the club have different negotiating tactics for different types of players? If it's an ambitious target like this one with other, bigger clubs in the fray, will the club be more willing to pay more and haggle less? Especially considering that the other team wants to get rid and aren't asking for too much anyway.

Im pretty sure that each deal is looked at individually and the club tries to do what it thinks is most likely to work in its favour in the circumstances.

If we were to get him i'd put him and Eriksen together, with Lamela at 10, Njie and Bera (if we sign them all of course) as the two supporting Kane, I think Eriksen is most effective when he picks the ball up deeper, whereas Lamela is a bit more about those instant, incisive passes, if you was to count how many one touch passes Lamela makes in a game it probably outnumbers the rest of the team combined

Just been browsing a RM forum and the fans' main concern about Illarra is that they think 99% of his passes go backwards...

May just have lost his confidence, but considering that one of the main traits we need in a CDM right now is progressive thinking, anyone else find that a bit worrying?

Hopefully it's just his role at Madrid preventing him from being more expressive, so if he's the one Poch wants, I'm all for it.
Food for thought though imo.

Passing comparison.jpg

Backwards passing percentage per average 90 min

Illarramendi 34.23%, Mason 29.9%, Bentaleb 37.66%, Dembele 45.16%

He passes backwards less than the three CMs last year other than Mason (who are still here), although to be fair most matches he plays in his team were controlling possession. Still, given his main job will be to sit in front of the defence, sometimes maybe even dropping in between the two CBs, his backwards passing percentage is not bad at all, plus you'd assume he'd play with a more attack minded CM whose job will be to play the more risky forward passes whether that be Mason or Bentaleb or whoever.

Considering their penchant for being impatient, spoilt brat fuckwits, I'd say treat anything said on a Real Madrid forum with a great deal of scepticism!
