I think when you play Bent you have to play Hudd. He's the only person capable of playing Bent in from midfield

Thud did well tonight - he just needs to really turn on the agression when he plays - too much of a nice guy at the moment.

Snarl a bit more Tom!!

We don't have anyone else in the squad who can orchestrate that kind of fluid attacking play from central midfield. His speed of thought and range of passing are second to none - when hes got his head right he simply makes us play a better style of football. He has an intuitive understanding of where the ball should be at any point in time. Its all one and two touch stuff and almost always the right idea. He acts as a quarterback does in American Football, directing play, dictating the tempo of attacks - pulling the strings. If the team were an animal, he'd be it's brain!

No matter how many technically gifted athletes you have in a team you need a core of players who have that kind of natural footballing brain. We have Keane who has that same kind of genius - but you can't dictate build-up play from a forward position. We 100% need to have a ball-playing midfield general - otherwise we are simply an expensive collection of athletes playing without any on-field direction!

Arsenal have Fabregas, Manure have Scholes AND Carrick. We only have Hudd - until we sign Fabregas Mk II or re-sign Carrick he must be accommodated in the team.

One more point - hes no less mobile than Carrick. MC has no pace to speak of and is not particularly strong - but he does have technique and tactical acumen in spades - just like our Tommy!

Tom isn't a player to be slotted into a system - if you play him you've got to build the system around him - only then will you see what he can really offer.

Amen.

I thought he changed the game when he came on. We were made to look pretty average before he was on the pitch. Good on him.

Agree that the Hudd has so much potential, but really think people are going overboard here. Good pass for first goal, but he tries too many Hollywood balls. Reminds me of Carrick early on - who then learnt to keep it simple and became a star. The Hudd will be good, and it was great seeing him come on and help turn things around for us, but please let's not get all Tottenham about it and start massively over-rating a decent player. He's decent, that is all as yet. Well done tonight.

I think the game changed because we got an early goal in the second half. The pass Huddlestone played in for the goal was meant for Bent, luckily for us Berbatov was able to reach it.
I like Huddlestone but he really needs to knuckle down and work on his lack of mobility before he can be considered a starter for the 1st team.
Decent enough game tonight but nothing out of the ordinary!

the middle definitely opened up in the second half. Dont know if it was Huddleston or the fact that they sent a second man out to deal with Lennon on every run in the second half. He gave them fits.

Before we get carried away.....Hud is like most things in....English soccer....promise but not classey enough for the bigger world game. I thought that he was going to reach the standard, last season, but he never did. He 'floundered' around, game to game and produced nothing that can be deemed Prem class never mind World class. Perhaps his new physique will alllow him to 'get about' more BUT that has yet to be proven. I can see Championship class there but....noy anything better....yet. Come on Hud, prove us wrong Brum need a Derby 'old boy' to sort them out COYS!

He has already proved you very very wrong. He changed the game last night. Something our supposed 'Premiership' class players didn't manage to do.

And as for people asking "has he lost weight?" - you won't notice it if he does. Unless they take apart his skeleton and maybe dislocate his shoulders for a while. Seriously, it's his frame. He'll never be a skinny jean wearing, anorexic indie-boy.

Can't quite understand why people question Hudlestone's passing, his successful pass ratio is higher than Carrick's in my opinion, I can't remember how many times he used to put the ball a yard too far ahead of the strikers.

You may be able to question a range of things about Hudd if you must but never his passing.

Can anyone tell me which of our players can pass a ball better than Tom Huddlestone?

Ideal example. In the last minute, we scrape the ball out of the box (think it was Bale) it comes to Huddlestone, who holds off his man, then from the edge of his own box to halfway inside the oppo's half he finds Lennon with a perfect ball.

Top top passing ability.

huddlestone plays the holding/sitting back midfielder role very nicely, he can save his energy for tackling back rather than sprinting forward and he has CB qualities.

I dont understand why he isnt used in this role period, we have plenty of midfielders who like to go sniffing for goals.

And for fucks sake get Bale back on the left wing! Hes already proved he has more pace, accurate crossing and shooting ability than fucking Downing and Pedersen ( international left wingers).

Shit I am great at team selection, private message me Juande and Ill only charge a small consultation fee!

There is no doubt in my mind that the Hudd is class. It's not all about the sheer accuracy of his passes, it's the vision and the audacity of them. His best quality is having the balls and vision to play high risk passes that have a high level of reward if they come off - that's what causes the less imaginative amongst us to focus on "bad" passes that don't reach completion. The difference is that those passes that do complete split defences and put our strikers in possesion in goalscoring positions - the kind of passes that change games. It's bloody hard to score at the top level and players like Huddlestone make a difference - too many coaches, let alone fans, are scared of the high risk/reward strategy, hence Marsh, Currie, Hoddle and Le Tissier not getting there share of International glory, and hence England tumbling out of the Euros. You won't win bugger all by trying not to lose.
It is true, as others have said in this thread, that tactics have to be based around this type of player to get the most out of them - if you want a prime example of how effective this type of "slow" player can be, think Zidane. The pace is in the speed of thought and execution, no player can run as fast as the ball can be passed.
