Is Neville always like that when he commentates on Utd? It's like fan commentary. Shouldn't be doing it.

I think we played quite well overall. Dier couldn't block both corners. He chose to block the far corner and CR shot a worldy at the near corner. Reg was playing Sancho onside and that was a poor goal to conceed. Thats a slip of concentration as I think the defence will all be taking their positions off Dier. The third I havent watched back cos I feel too sick about it but overall small margins.

Kane had an off day when not much was coming off and Son is low on confidence for some reason but still pulls the oppo defence around all game.

Kane has to do better in these games... but we are so fragile it's ridiculous.
We've been fragile ever since Pochettino left really. It probably has something to do with the fact that both Mourinho and Conte like(d) to whine about the club and its players all the time, which damages confidence - and going straight from Pochettino's much more motivational approach to the direct opposite.

It doesn't matter, though. We're treating the rest of the season as a series of training sessions, to get ready for next season. We can't expect a manager of Conte's quality to bust a gut until he has all his shiny new toys in place, can we?

What did we need to bring on from the bench when we had them pinned back second half, and Kulu started to look tired, whilst Sonny continued to look uninspired? Some guile, vision and penetrative passing. What did we have to bring on? Just Lucas. He really might as well not be playing against the low, compact blocks we will increasingly encounter as we improve. I had thought we should keep him as 2cnd choice RW next season, but last night proved the futility of that idea.

Thought overall we played well. Compare that to the shambles of a performance in the reverse fixture and it’s clear we have improved massively. We looked threatening both with and without the ball. The fact we dominated them at home shows what level we’re at - even if that was a tactical ploy by them.

in the end we just got out done by one of the best players ever to play the game. Thought the second goal was avoidable but the other two I think you’ve just got to praise Ronaldo rather than criticise our defending.

They played us at our own game, so similar to what we did to City. It’s an easy way to beat us, give us the ball, condense the space infront of the box catch us on turnovers

We need to wake up to that, unfortunately if we don’t get the lead in the majority of games we play that is exactly how teams are going to play against us

We had half chances yesterday, if we don’t give Ronaldo that stupid amount of space on the edge of the box and we get one up then we absolutely win that game. We are a good side, we just need someone who isn’t Harry Kane to have some creativity in the middle

I think you do calm most in here but I think the main concern with “the summer” is fans really believe we will not be able to attract top players if we’re not in the CL

We didn't exactly attract top players when we were consistently in the CL though mate.

I still firmly believe some excellent deals (out of/short contract players) have already been worked on behind the scenes & the players targeted/acquired will be happy to come due to 1 : Conte, and 2 : they'll believe they're able to come in and instantly replace underperforming player currently in our ranks.

People really need to remember that Conte is still only 4 months into the job and, bar a couple of players, is still working with the same players that have left so many of us frustrated for the last god knows how many years.

Emotions are guiding thoughts & I think a few would really benefit from taking a step back & actually calmly assess the bigger picture.

Onions.

Great post. As I've said before the current Liverpool team wasn't built on world beaters, it was built on very good players all fitting together.
Its a team game and we have had no direction for the last 6+ transfer windows.
I really hope we realise this and should/when Conte leaves we dont just appoint the nearest shiny manager and find 3/4 of the squad dont fit his philosophy.

Agree. We're not going to win every match. What's important is that we play well in every match. For me there was a lot of very good play from Spurs in the match. In fact that's the first time in a while I've watched us and not been annoyed by us losing a game. Sure it would have been nice to win it, but in the end Ronaldo put in a massive performance and won the game for Utd. Other than that we held possession well, didn't make much in the way of silly mistakes and looked like an attacking threat.

If we play like that in our remaining games this season then we'll have a great run in.

Ive noticed this with him when he covers Utd games.
When Utd are attacking its about how great Utd are playing and how great their attackers are.
When Utd are under pressure its about how bad Utd are defensively.

He doesn't really commentate on the actual match, he commentates on Man Utd.

Really? The first goal is so avoidable. The defence dropped deep and invited him to shoot. He had acres of space and time to hit that shot. The cbs should have come out sooner as there was no real threat behind. You can see the entire defence dropping off. Ronaldo was never going to waltz through them like he could have done 10 years ago so there was no risk engaging early. Its just a risk adverse attitude from the defense.

Every goal is 'avoidable' in the grand scheme of things but not many players are guaranteed to hit the top corner from that distance. Yes the defence should have stepped out to press him, but when play is moving that quickly the safe decision is to drop off to stop the possibility of the player running with the ball playing someone in - they weren't to know in that split-second there were no runners. Ronaldo still has to beat Lloris from distance, so you just need to hold your hands up and say good strike.

Yes it's frustrating to concede the goals in the manner we did and the context of the loss feels worse as it's made our top four chance almost non existent but there have been times this season where we have lost belief and faded after going behind. At least we were able to work our way into the game and pull ourselves level twice. An improvement when you consider how we played against them at home...

Yeah and then he sits in the punditry box most weekends are rips into them.

But yeah never really got the whole letting someone commentate when the team they support is playing, they let carragher do liverpool too.

We've improved hugely. When they beat us in the reverse fixture it looked like a top 4 team playing a midtable team. In this match it at least looked like what we are - two top four challengers.

I can't really agree. Decision making is key. If a player in my team backed away in those circumstances I'd definitely be coaching them. I

I wonder how Conte reacted to the goals? We know he makes the players watch a lot of videos so I can't see him or many other managers saying sometimes there's nothing you can do but applaud the play.

For me there's too many reasons why that goal should have been avoided. You can be assured that had that been city or Liverpool then he would have been closed down in that area. Its the most dangerous area outside the box.

one thing we can evaluate from the United game is there a weaknesses in our play. It took a player with vast experience to exploit those frailties Our position in the league clearly identifies the level we are at. All the hope that was there for me has now gone possibly fifth if we push hard enough. It’s Arsenal’s to lose the bastards.

Especially so with Ronaldo, giving him time and space to pick the exact spot he wanted was very poor.
