What I love about Ericksen, and why Im so optimistic, is he was clearly the quarterback out there. He is always looking for the ball to come back to him and moving to get it. He wants to be running the show.

Excellent performance overall. 7 & 8 everywhereDawson's defending worries me though. He earned himself 4 yellows . We were very lucky the ref was clueless.

Holtby for his impact.

Soldado was poor, paulinho looked off the pace but credit to him he kept going

Dembele was solid, townsend was decent but poor decision making again

Dawson was awful, as was naughton.

Eriksen was decent
Dawson was awful, were you watching the same game?

I like dawson. Think he played well. Some crunching tackles, but sometimes lacks the pace to make the interceptions he wants to.

Thought Kane did ok too. Didnt lose the ball, held it up a bit, and put in two dangerous crosses.

I'm struck by the proliferation of very stingy ratings, most of which appear to be based on the 'individual errors' school of football criticism and seem especially inappropriate after a game where we totally dominated the play throughout, except when a few daft mistakes let Cardiff in - mistakes that were generally covered and corrected and did not lead to a goal.

I'm unable to choose a Spurs man of the match. We played as a unit and no one stood out, except a pair of subs who were on the pitch for less than a half hour combined. The outstanding player on the pitch, by a long way, was Marshall.

Lloris 6
Walker 7
Dawson 6.5
Vertonghen 6
Naughton 5.5
Paulinho 7.5
Dembélé 7.5
Townsend 7
Eriksen 6.5
Sigurdsson 6.6
Soldado 7

Lamela 7.5
Holtby 7.5
Kane 7

I like dawson.

Yep.

He didn't have a great game today, but he played himself back into AVB's esteem for a reason.

Every good CB pairing has a ball-playing lovemuffin, and a less sexy stopper. What made Ledley so freakin amazing is that he was both, but that's incredibly rare.

Verts = ball-playing type
Kaboom = ball-playing type
Daws = stopper
Caulker = stopper

Which is one of the reasons I was surprised to see SC go. Is Chiriches the stopper type? Cos if not, then I'm concerned. Playing with two ball-playing CBs is a recipe for disaster. You need one of them to be the guy that launches himself across a shot at the last minute, and dominates in the air at corners. You need one of them to be less sexy, less cultured, but as bloody-minded as possible. Look at any of the best CB pairings, and you'll see that combination.

The stopper will never be as loved by a certain section of the fanbase, because they notice the misplaced hoofs but don't register the way they dominate their opposite number so much of the time. I bet their opposite number notices though, especially as they're counting the bruises the next morning.

AVB told Daws he could leave, but changed his mind as he came to realise what he brings to the side. I really wish our own fans would do the same.

Like I said - he didn't have a great game today. But he's a player of immense dimension.

And I really hope that Chiriches is in a similar mould, or an injury to Daws could really fuck us up at the back.

Naughton is hopeless

Oh FFS. No he's not.

He's probably mid-table standard rather than what we need in the starting XI for a title push (in a few seasons I mean), but do you really expect to have world-class full-backs as back up? Don't be daft, it ain't ever gonna to happen. Naughton is as good a full-back as you could hope to have on the bench.

He's a versatile full back who can play on either side, and he's pretty damn good at that given that he's the reserve option. Unless you're Barca or someone, you're not going to have better quality than him that won't get utterly pissed off for not starting. He's pretty much perfect as a squad defender, unless we unearth a young prospect and/or Fryers develops.

I disagree slightly, but only because I dont agree he is adequate cover as a left back. As a right back, he is more than good enough to cover. Being so one footed means that he hinders the whole shape of our team and he is easily pressured into making mistakes by attackers as he cant play down the line when playing on the left. I honestly don't believe he is good enough to play for us as a left back. But would be comfortable with him if he was in his favoured position.

Becoming increasingly frustrated w/ Townsend's selfishness. Needs to learn to pass and not always cut in and shoot. Add a little variation to your game, son.

I put Soldado as MOM - his finishing was fantastic. Ok, the only problem was that he didn't actually score, but under most circumstances, he certainly would have. Eriksen also looked very good until fading at the end, but Dembele was probably the real MOM for me. Pleased that Lamela got the assist for the goal, I think he will integrate slowly, but is going to be fantastic. Also impressed again by Holtby, and think he is going to get PL starts soon, deservedly.

Naughton - 10 for effort, 6 for application

I understand not rating his ability, he's a young right back being played out of position after all. I don't understand slagging him off though, there's really no need for it and he gives his best when he plays. He played a lot of games last season when we got our best ever points total so he must have been doing something right. All our fullbacks need to be cut some slack, they've all improved since we signed them and if they need to be replaced then so be it. Untill then some of you need to chill out, we've let in one goal this season and we're second in the league, why get upset?

Jesus can people stop calling Naughton a young prospect or whatever. He's 24, the same age as Bale. Two years younger than Messi. 6 years older than Luke Shaw who far outshines him...

He's a decent squad player but he isn't a prospect nor is 'youth' an excuse for him

Thought he was a yr or two older tbh. He's a good backup RB imo. Otherwise, I hope Fryers undergoes a huge improvement over the next couple of months as the games pick up in terms of regularity as Danny can't play every single and Naughton, whilst doing some good things just isn't a natural LB and it's not fair on him or the rest of the defence to keep asking him to play there. Despite him trying his best.

Lloris? About a 7ish. Maybe 6 because of his lapse in concentration/skill in giving away a needless corner. Otherwise, he didn't have much to do except try to do the impossible after being totally hung our to dry with an awful backpass.
