Very unlucky and I think 8 points difference is maybe even slightly generous in the end. After the start to the game we threw everything at them for 50 mins to get back into it but just ran out of steam. Hartley being forced off was a major turning point, T Youngs had a nightmare at the line-out and we just couldn't get any possession or territory for the last 10-15 mins.

No doubt NZ were far more clinical and looked the classy team, but imagine if we had a couple of crafty centres and some flyers on each wing...

Still work to do be done, signs look good though.

As you say, subs were a big turning point. Once the lineout was a no contest NZ could kick the ball away at will knowing that our backline didn't have a line break in them. Have to say I'm seriously underwhelmed by Tompkins so far.

It's a real shame that we didn't get to see Yarde or Wade in these internationals.

I just hope that Lancaster is brave enough to put them in when they're back rather than thinking that the last three performances were good enough.

36 is probably going to stay in the team but if Manu doesn't make it then I'm not sure Tomkins has done enough to be selected come the 6 nations (although not sure what the alternatives would be either).

I'm certain he'll give them a go. He was going to play them and the only thing that would change his mind would be undroppable performances by the incumbents, and he didn't get that.

More drop a ball than undroppable. :hilarious:

Barritt will probably be back by then. Hopefully Eastmond will be in contention as well.

I think they will definitely get another go, if it wasn't for injuries I'm certain they would have been on the wings for the Argentina game.

13 is a real problem if Tuilagi isn't fit. If Tomkins plays well for Saracens over the winter he may get another go. The others aren't really putting their hands up to be selected, I presume Trinder is next in line going on call ups but you have the likes of Joseph and Daly as well.

I wouldn't write Tomkins off yet, either. His first taste of Test rugby was a wake up call, and who knows how he will react. Not one to write in at the moment, but one to keep an eye on to see his response. He knows that he has to improve; will he do so?

As ever, our chances of success in 2015 hinge on finding more than just a couple of backs who are above average. I think our forwards could be a frightening prospect in 18 months time. Even against the best they're making us tough to beat.

We have a lot of "samey" calibre backs. Needs 3 or 4 to really push on and make themselves stand out in the next 12 months. Especially the centres, imo. The 9-10 combo is going to be pretty much what we expect so hopefully they can become a truly dependable, if uninspired, unit at least.

Either way, I'm still pleased with the signs of progress and improvement we're seeing under Lancaster. You can actually see there's a semblance of direction and planning involved in the England coaching. Something that had been practically non-existent for far too long.

Early six nations predictions anyone?

Can't see us doing 3 in a row. Think this will be Englands year but you never know what France is going to turn up I suppose

I think it'll be a Wales v England showdown again, but very hard to call just now as we only have the Argentina game to use as a direct comparison at the moment (where Wales looked very good but Argentina looked very terrible).

I want to see Wales play the Aussies before making a firm prediction, but I think we can safely say that the way the forwards are playing, England won't be rolled over in quite the same way as they were in Cardiff earlier this year.

I also think Italy might fancy their chances of picking up a couple of wins as Ireland and Scotland look in various states of disarray at the moment.

I suspect that the England Wales game will be the decider again. And it's at Twickenham, and England will be looking to start the game the way NZ started on Saturday, and for the same reason. I take England to win it; just.

Far too early for me to predict so I am going to sit on the fence. I don't think someone will win the slam this time though, and I think the championship will be between England and Wales by marginal points difference.

My heart wants to say England...but my head daren't.

The world cup will be an almighty battle between England, Wales and Australia for the top two spots!

Wales v Tonga...possibly the most boring game of rugby I've ever endured. Turgid shite!

Unbelievable. All Blacks have gone length of the pitch in injury time to tie the match.

I think! Video ref.
