Not sure if interesting is the right description of our football. Our inability to maintain possession along with allowing opponents to have the ball without an obvious press creates issues. We get outplayed/ out numbered in the middle of the park irrespective of opposition.

yesterday both with the ball and without the ball the two midfielders are to deep you can't press a side when the two of them are 5 yards away from the centre halfs and you can't build up any meaningful possession either

Completely disagree, Davies has been tremendous for us.
Davies has been great defensively, but I think the argument for Lenglet is that his passing range and accuracy (some of the very best in Europe for a CB) could really help us against these types of teams that set out to stifle us and shut us down. Davies is fine on the ball but nothing special, and Dier is inconsistent so without Romero we don't have any really reliable passers in the entire back 3 which is an issue.

Not sure how much of a difference it would make given our forwards are getting marked so tightly, but I'd like to see him given a runout at LCB to see what he can do.

Son seemed so off it yesterday.
I never thought I’d say this but has richarlison actually got a chance to break in?

I actually was at the game and agreed that the first half was bad. But the second half was good and it came from a team that proved can play well.

That's why I think your assessment of "awful" and narrow wins is nonsense, we haven't struggled to win games recently, and yesterday was deserved after all the chances in the second half. Football is 90 minutes not 45.
Yep, we had more goals and more XG than Wolves, and deserved the win

Still not sure if Richarlison is more likely to score or assist than Son. But would understand if he gets to start v Forest.
Rotation now kicks in fully with fixtures increasing in frequency

he wasn't very good yesterday was very lucky to get away with the chance at the end of the first half when the guy should have scored Davies lost track of the man - I thought having Perisic in front of him caused him to have to do some different things no doubt it takes time to build that relationship but an overlapping player Davies isn''t

the problem isn't that the centre halfs can't pass the ball the midfield players were yesterday standing 5 yards away from them the forwards end up isolated as we don't have no build up or pressure on the ball - its not a defensive issue at all the two central midfield players both of whom are primary safe options, then the two wing backs didn't affect the game in the first half in an attacking sense so we end up to deep and allow the opposition to dominate the ball - looking at the Wolves team sheet yesterday which had so little attacking threat you could see their game plan - the second half was better but as you become a better side and teams develop plans to stop your plan a so there has to be something else otherwise we will continually find sides doing what Wolves did I still think we lack some midfield guile and leadership

I don’t think there is anything wrong with saying we’ve not looked great so far this season.

We’ve shown glimpses so far, but on the whole yesterday I thought it was a disappointing performance but workman like. Chelsea was generally a shit show but we showed resilience. Southampton was good.

The optimistic part of me would say that we are simply yet to get going this season. Son and Kane have yet to really fire for starters.

So it is a good sign if we continue to pick up points whilst not playing well.

It’s a long season and I hope we will click as the season wears on. It would be nice to see us improve our performances and style of play though. Yesterday was more like a Nuno / Jose performance and Arsenal in contrast look much more pleasing on the eye.

The positives are that we really are well off our best at the moment. Oddly we started to dominate at one point in the first half and then completely let it go again, it was like we knew we were forcing them back and so relaxed. Wolves were fiery, tenacious and hardworking making it very difficult for us and when you aren't at your best that's hard to deal with but deal with it we did.
I have to say I was pleased to see Mourinho and Podence go off together for Jiminez and someone else as they lost a lot of guile and dynamism and I thought that's going to open up some space which proved to be right. From our point of view Richarlison was the right choice and while I worried about Sessignon coming on to face Treore he handled him well enough. Also bringing Bisouma on late to shore up the team and see us out for the win is a real upgrade on last year.
Not at our best but while Wolves looked busy Lloris didn't have to make a save and we got the win and that's the mark of a team to fear.
PS how excited am I that after what seems like decades we are actually scoring goals from corners!
It’s a good post, but bloody hell, man:
Moutinho
Jiménez
Sessegnon
Bissouma

Oh, and you forgot Erickson…

The CBs job usually isn't to pass to the midfielders, though. It's their job to cut through the lines and get the ball directly to the forwards. That's how we get up the pitch so fast, by having the forwards lay it off creating space in behind.

If our CBs are unreliable passers that makes the entire system much harder to implement as the accuracy and weighting makes it much harder for Kane, Son and Kulu to make their lay-offs. They also miss other great attacking opportunities when wing backs are making runs in behind, due to their limited passing range/consistency.

I agree that there are problems with the pressing and positioning in midfield but passing CBs are absolutely crucial to Conte's style, which is precisely why we've been trying to spend so much on top passing CBs like Bastoni, and went for Lenglet as a back-up (a fantastic passer). Conte wants better passing from deep.

Having thought about it. The two first halves v Chelsea and Wolves although we were poor when we had the ball, we rarely gave up very clear cut chances that led to Hugo having to make saves or indeed a goal. The defense actually put a lot of blocks in and restricted them to long range efforts (especially Wolves) or crosses that we dealt with.

It shows that even when we can't get going in possession or in an attacking sense we are still very solid at the back for the most part and can dig in to get through tough periods.

I guess tactically we are adapting to new ideas as much as anything. We’re not playing our natural game , teams being fresh can close off avenues which stifles our fluency. Defensively we seem to go through the motions and rely on our training.(instinct)

Agree with this having watched the full match replay.
Don’t know what the people in this thread during the game were watching.

I mean, yeah, but we do stick 11 men behind the ball when the opposition has possession in our half. That's not to say that the team doesn't deserve credit but It would be particularly concerning if we were adopting such negative tactics and still conceding lots of chances.

Wolves played well. There are going to be games like this where you take your goal and win 1-0.

err...where did I say Davies has not been good

My point was specific to a typical Conte LCB. Defensively Davies is brilliant and he is also good playing in triangles and trying to get the ball out. But what he lacks is, straight up passing - especially long passes & through ball passing. Yesterday, Perisic made so many runs - either Davies saw it late or was not in sync. So, I said, I want Lenglet to get more game time and want to see his passing range with Perisic ahead.
