i wish we hadn't have loaned danny rose out.

Same here. I've watched every game he's played for Sunderland and he's been pretty damn good. Surprisingly consistent. Had a rough go against Sterling early in the season, but since then he's really impressed.

We could have really used him for depth at LB. Would have been nice to see the Verts at CB that we saw today all season as opposed to him playing out of position at LB.

they werent all that impressive at the lane, be much harder there though.

it's a tough one, if lose we stand a good chance of going out, if we win we are pretty much a good bet to go through so could rest players for the easier home games.

players and fans could probably use a good moral boosting victory right now

Is Benny nearly back then? Hope so!

I'd play the following team against Lazio, 4-3-3 looking to attack and win:

............................Friedel

Walker.........Gallas...........Dawson.....Naughton

....Huddlestone.....Livermore.....Carroll

........Falque.............Ade............Sigurdson

Because against West Ham, I'd like to see us go 4-4-2:

.............................Lloris

Naughton.......Caulker.....Verts.........BAE (or Naughton)
(Walker)
Lennon..........Sandro......Dembele......Bale

....................Dempsey....Defoe

If we win, we're surely through, my maths might be wrong but I don't see how then two teams in the group could overtake us, whatever the other results. There's only one other home game in the group stage, BTW.

But as I say I expect us to lose, and I would probably leave a lot of key players at home. But if AVB choses to go for it, I won't blame him, I just think we're on a hiding to nothing out there. Lazio will be tough, dirty and cynical, the officials will probably give them all the key calls and a lot of minor ones too.

we can't afford any more injuries, and with the home game against the Greeks to come and fall back on - its imperative that AVB picks a side that reflects the fact that we have two very important home league games coming up.

I would leave out Vertonghen, Sandro, Bale, Defoe and Lennon.

I am guessing AVB cares more about this game than the NLD. I reckon we will be near enough full strength.

We now have to give Lloris and Carroll a run of games..I'd play Gallas right back and drop him for Sunday move Walker to the left back and play 433

.....................Lloris
Gallas Dawson Vertonghen Walker
.......Sigurdsson Sandro Carroll
..........Falque Adebayor Bale

I don't give a flyin feck bout this wank competition.
You wouldn't say that if we'd won it.

It's a european competition, still prestigeous and we shouldn't turn our nose up IMO....winning trophies is what football should be about!

Not if it's affecting our league form which it will do if we qualify for latter stages. Top four is still attainable and most be our ultimate goal.

I agree but we have a big enough squad to cope, plus the player (like Andre Villas-Boas said few weeks back) have to get into the habbit of playing two games a week-it's good practise for when, in the near future we can make CL.

If we can't compete in the Europa League without it affecting our league form, how will we ever hope to compete in Champions League against the best teams in the world without it affecting our league form?

Liverpool and Newcastle are likely to both progress to the knockout stages, Arsenal are pretty much guaranteed to either be in the Champions League or Europa League knockout stage, so we aren't going to be at a disadvantage to either of those three teams in terms of games played and Everton are a couple of injuries away from having their squad stretched and their annual slump of form to appear.

The knockout stages are where this competition starts to actually be worth a damn. It'll give the players valuable experience in European knockout competitions, against some potentially very big clubs. We'll hopefully not have such a straining injury list, meaning we'll actually be able to rotate more than just our goalkeepers and hopefully (PLEASE GOD LEVY JUST DO IT) we'll have signed 2 or 3 players that we so desperately need in the CM, CAM and wide positions to strengthen both the first team and the squad.

We have not won enough trophies over the last 20 years to be able to dismiss competitions so easily.
