If Dier and Dembele aren't fully fit, I'd prefer to start Winks in CM than drop Alli back there. It's not that he can't play it, it's just that he's much more effective in the AM3.

From Poch's presser...

TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS

First up, the Spurs boss goes through his team news for the weekend trip to Middlesbrough, a venue where the club has a remarkably poor record in recent times.

Pochettino will make decisions on whether to include Danny Rose, Moussa Dembele and Eric Dier after he sees his squad at training this afternoon.

Harry Kane is out though after he hurt his ankle in last week's 1-0 win over Sunderland and the manager said: "We need to assess him every day, he's very positive. We need to do another scan and see how long."

Very difficult to start Winks "ahead" of Eriksen for a PL match.

Does Eriksen play CM ?
Does Winks play AM ?

If no is answer for both, then why are you comparing them ?

I am seeing CM as a specialized position. If Dembele or Dier is out, I want to see a proper CM there. I dont want shift Alli, because we need a player to make runs beyond Janssen. Only Alli does this so well.

Just because Eriksen is a bigger name than Winks or more experienced (in a different position), doesnt mean we have to sacrifice the team balance. We did that against Monaco & suffered.

With Wanyama not playing during the week there is no need to take any chances on Dier. Wouldn't risk Dembele either, although it would be handy to have him on the bench if we end up under pressure towards the end of the game.

Its a great thing to see such big variations in everybodys line ups....it show what a fantastic squad we have right now!

Right so as to my main thoughts on selection......
1. With kane out for a while i feel son will be utiluzed as a striker and share minute with jansen. Both may play but janssen may come off with son moving up top with us bringing on a midfielder.

2. 3 games this next 7 days means although we want our very best 11 we will need to rest here and their to find the best balance between each starting 11's.

Now for what I feel we 99% know at this point.....
--------------hugo-------------
Walker--toby--jan------?
----wanyama---?----------
sissoko----alli--------son
-------------janssen----------

This im 99% sure of as should most others be. Only question marks are to who of dembele/dier play cm (personally id start dembele and have him come on later in moscow meaning he can then start v city. As for lb id play rose v boro and city and davies v moscow.
So my answer to the ? are dembele and rose.

All 3 games are massive but this one i feel is the most important in a funny kind of way....win this we put pressure on others and set up a monster tie next weekend v city and a win v boro will also keep us on the front foot for moscow for players like lamela/eriksen ect to push on for us.

LLoris
Walker Alderweireld Vertonghen Davies

Wanyama
Alli

Sissoko Eriksen Son

Janssen

Davies has been doing well - so why risk Rose if he's not 100%

Alli and Eriksen can interchange their positions

Subs: Dier; Lamela; Dembele; CCV; Trippier; Winks; Vorm

Lamela can come on and replace either of the two wide men or Eriksen/Alli. Dier and Dembele should be fit enough for part of the game. Son's been terrific and didn't play mid-week - so he has to start.

Would love to see N'Koudou and Edwards - but perhaps too soon.

We don't seem to rush anyone back from injury under Poch. Think Dembele and Dier will be given more time to fully recover. Think he will bench Lamela and Eriksen with the CL in mind and bring them on if we need them. Expect sissoko to start this one.

Would be great to think Poch can keep on improving our team/squad and be here for 20 years (not that I think I'll be around by then).
Last long term managers have been successful for THFC, Bill Nick (16 years), Burkinshaw (8 years) and Arthur Rowe (6 years)

I watch a fair bit of Boro as married to a Teessider (both going tomorrow in separate ends!). I'm confident of a steady win if we take them seriously. Their biggest threat is set pieces so we need the big lads playing (not one for Winks).

George Friend also struggles a lot with pace, so Sissoko has to start on the right for me.

They will try and keep it tight and nab one and they are good defensively, so need to get one first half and open them up.

I live in Middlesbrough and had a season ticket for many years. We can't under estimate them as you mentioned they're a solid defensive unit and have some good albeit inconsistent attacking players. The biggest thing they have going for them though is the extremely enthusiastic home crowd so it's imperative that we get after them early on and kill them off... which will in turn subdue the crowd.

This, I think we'll see Alli score more goals playing next to Janssen as his hold up play and layoffs are really good. Actually the entire attacking three will probably score more goals with Janssen leading the line.

Remember seeing Spurs take on 'Boro a few years ago in Middlesborough. Stayed in Robin Hood's Bay the night before. Can't remember much about the match except Assou-Ekotto giving up and turning away after a failed tackle. This was before his big injury. I had no time for him after that. After his return from injury he was a changed player and became one of my favourite players for Spurs. I think there's a pub close by called the White Hart. Am I right - or is my memory playing tricks?

I really like the Middlesborough team. Ayala is a rock in defence (when not injured) and think Fischer is a real talent in attack - except he hasn't shown much so far this season. Hope he doesn't turn it on against us. Friend and Gibson have been getting good reviews for their play in defence so far. Should be an interesting game. COYS.

From what I've seen they're a pretty tight defensive team. Broke records in the championship for clean sheets iirc. We will have the monopoly of ball possession but it will be a challenge to see how we cope against these tactics. To some extent I think the injury to Kane could be a blessing in disguise *hear me out*:

1. Kane gets a much needed break. Two full seasons followed by England duties will have taken its toll and he's been looking heavy-legged. Last season when he wasn't scoring early on he was still showing his all round qualities and playing well. His link-up and sharpness haven't been seen so far.

2. We can experiment and see how good Janssen can be in a run of games and step away from the 4-2-3-1. Get a strong run going so when Kane returns fresh and ready to go we'll be in a good position. Also puts emphasis on midfielders to chip in more with goals.
